well in Macau you can still see the flags of Republic of China(Taiwan) in the Sun Yat-sen memorial house. so I think Chiang Kai Shek's poster can be seen there too.
These old film clips make me feel terribly nostalgic. I lived in HK in the early 1980s and visited Macau often. I remember the temple and the ruin of the cathedral, and the very laid back atmosphere with the Portuguese still there but the place pretty run-down. Went back to HK last year - wow, did I feel out of place - everything had changed.
look at the boat at the beg and youll see where we got the idea for portuguese spanish galleans, chinese where ahead of us 100 years in sea travelling in 15 century
i still bought those small red chinese bomb sticks made in macao during the 80s here in portugal its amazing how time and ppl are connected, those cigarettes where also to sale in shops, i guess we could have given better life maybe more buildings like hong kong but still they will have the streets and old houses and the ppl with diff taste and ways theres nothing like west meeting the east, camoens the 16 century poet was in macao in 16 century had a women called mya lin he wrote about her
During WW II the Japanese did not invade Macao because Macao belonged to Portugal. However, the suffering in China spilled over to Macao. At the border there was a Japanese check point, and thousands of people waited for permission to cross. While my mother and I waited on the Macao side, I heard loud and incessant screams coming from the Japanese military headquarters. Apparently someone was being tortured. I remember those screams to this day.
I lived in Macao in 194l and 1942. There was a famous (or well-known) street named October 5th, where women served men, and it was legal. Is that street still in operation?
@vitoduval You are right about Chinese hotels. In fact, there was an international incident a few years ago. 400 men from Japan on a company tour of Macao got 400 local women to "entertain" them, all at the same time!
this street not "in business" anymore, but buildings still exists. they turned them into guest houses, domestic and shops for tourists. for serving the men's needs, there is a lot of highly luxurious massage parlour or night clubs somewhere else in which u can meet woman from all over the world. do give at try.
@ericluk68 I remember vividly walking down that street when I was six years old, in 1941. The houses were small and the front doors open. The women could be seen inside. I saw a woman leisurely playing the yangqin, a small Cantonese dulcimer. I wanted to stay and listen, but my hand was being held by my mother. Of course, I was not allow to visit that street by myself.
Your description sounds very enticing. Thank you. Perhaps I should go there soon. I am already 75.
@sc4portugal Thank you for the information. So the Chinese simply translated the street name from Portugese. And thank god for the Portugese in Macau (and the British in Hong Kong), the Chinese people had the opportunity to escape from the mainland when things were bad.
@wingklow Yes, the 5th October is a holiday in Portugal and is commonly known as the date in which Portugal became a Republic (5th Oct 1910). It is less well known that Portugal became independent on the 5th of October 1143. As far as I know no street name changes have happened in Macau, or in Hong Kong for that matter.
@sc4portugal You should be very proud in being Portugese. Portugal is the oldest nation in Europe and the first European world power. I may be part Portugese, because I was born in an area bordering Macau. My children are definitely part Portugese because their mother is part Portugese, and they are good looking, so people say.
@wingklow I think you meant Rua da Felicidade. It is near to the Rua de Cinco de Outubro( THe October 5th street.) Now the legal 'women-serving-men-house' is gone. You can google the street name Rua de Felicidade or copy the Chinese name 福隆新街 to google it in Chinese. you can see the photos.
@Macanese Thanks. I just watched videos of 福隆新街 Rua de Felicidade. October 5th Street was the street where women served men, as other viewers had confirmed. Maybe Rua de Felicidade also had the same service available, I am not surprised.
佛山sank while sheltering against a typhoon hitting HK badly about 40 years ago, killing a number of crew members aboard. My guess is the others could have all been scrapped over the years. Understand most if not all of them were kind of flat bottom vessels meant for river traffic rather than sea going, partly explaining why 佛山quite easily tipped over and sank then.
In 1962 I had a Childhood Portuguese 10 years old friend visited Hong Kong, we called him "Ah Share". He speak prefect Cantonese like us but he was not allowed to see western movies. He can only watched Chinese movie at that time. He told me western movie had kissing and nudity and Portuguese descent was restricted to see. As of today, I still do not quite believe it . Can someone from Macao confirm this is true.
Where do you get this beautiful video, it almost makes me cry even though I was two years old when the video was made. I miss the old time very very much!.
Macao uses the portuguese language. But not as often as before. Since it's not a portuguese colony anymore, poeple only talk mandarin or cantonese ... But there are still many portuguese speaking people there. I've lived there for 18 years.
@twistblabla Spanish? What the hell? It's Portuguese. From Portugal, you know? The neighbouring country of Spain. *sigh* Macao has to be a really beautiful place. I wish one day I could visit it... as well as Ceuta, Timor and Brasil. I truly hope my dream one day comes true.
Thanks for posting this video. I used to live a block away from the temple. It brought back so many fond, childhood memories with my grandmother. I lived there for ten years and then moved to the United States. I have not been back to Macau in so long, but planning to visit very soon!
Wow! Ive been livin here ever since I was born yet I didn't know that Macau was like this before! Now it's so different. Nowadays it's so crowded and polluted T_T And it is always smelly in the bus when I go to school since it's always crowded (no offense)

Amazing, rare footage of one of the most wonderous places on earth. This footage is particularly valuable in that old Macau is rapidly vanishing and being replaced by buildings and casinos of no local character.
Times are a changin'. For sure you heard it from your old man " that's not how we did things in our days", and that's the same thing you may have said to your son and that's what your son will tell your grandson. Not only Macau but the entire world is losing character, culture, and values.

I am a Malaysian Chinese.
Besides casinos i actually know very little about Macau.
We feel she is inextricably linked to HK or i might say overshadowed under Hong Kong influence and our media focus mainly on Hong Kong.
Not surprised to see people in Macau are like many Hong Kongers who are resistant to China's rule.
But i wanna know what truly distinguishes Macau.
