I didn't watch KL the way you did but looking back I think I missed out on a good thing. Think about it, Michelle Phillips went from being a 60\'s Pop Star to a Soap Actress (talk about reinvention) Nicolette Sheridan would go on to Desperate Housewives, it was also the First Show where a African American Family lived in The Neighorhood. Lisa Hartman married Clint Black, and Kathleen Noone whom I loved on All My Children became a real Beyotch on the Show.
@mishim100 Gary Ewing on "Knots Landing" (played by Ted Shackelford) was J.R. and Bobby Ewing's kid brother. He was married to Val, played by Joan Van Ark, who came from the "wrong side of the tracks" and so they up and moved from Texas to California and the cul-de-sac! Their daughter was Lucy Ewing, played by Charlene Tilton, who they had while they were teenagers. Lucy lived with the clan at Southfork and was part of the original Dallas cast.
@DickieAnginson You made a Mistake. JR was "Born" in 1939, Gary was in 1944 and Bobby was in 1949, which make shim The Middle Brother of the Three. Yet everything else you said was right on.
@DickieAnginson Don't worry about it. I only went by those Old School Dallas Books. Also, I remember when Bobby came to KL when Val got Breast Cancer, and Bobby talked about how Jock & Miss Ellie fought after he left. Bobby was 13 so when he saw Gary for the first time in 17 Years it was quite overwhelming.
@laminage I remember calling a friend on the phone (the kind with a receiver and curly cord!) and us crying while watching the series finale. I really loved that show. Donna Mills and Nicolette Sheridan were my faves!
Year was 1979. Bill Conti's theme for "Falcon Crest" had the best of all the night-time soaps in the '80s (I'd watch the credits then change the channel!). But "Knots Landing" was the best soap, hands down. I watched all 14 seasons and nearly had to be in therapy when it was canceled in 1993. My friend and I got on the phone and watched the last episode together -- and sobbed!
Since there is a new Dallas coming out next fall, I am hoping that they will come out with a remake of Knots Landing. But then again, nothing will be as good as the original series.
OMG, Karen Allen! I think she is a brilliant actress and she was my favourite of the Indiana Jones female co-stars, she rocked as feisty, spunky Marion Ravenwood in Raiders of the Lost Ark, and she didn't get enough air-time in Kingdom of the Crystal Skull..I did not like Cate Blanchett in that, she sucked..Joan Van Ark looks so pretty in that scene with Karen Allen, that plastic surgery she has had is awful.
I remember this! Loved this show even more than Dallas! Don't get me wrong, I loved Dallas, but when Knots came along, they really took night time soaps to the next level. I only wish I could find the series on DVD like I did Dallas. I would buy them all! Today!!
@suecowser I'm currently having trouble accessing websites other than YouTube so I can't do the research myself therefore please let me know which character(s) on Knotts Landing link the show to Dallas!
Knots Landing was one of my two favorite all-time TV shows. The second season theme was my favorite, a bit jazzier than the first season. Great saxophone. You can't argue with the success of the show when Mack, et al was introduced, but my favorite character by far was Sid (Don Murray). I remember watching when he died during the operation, and I was pissed as hell, cursing the producers. Don Murray was awesome, and I just wish they could have brought him back as perhaps's Sid's brother.
I don't care what anybody says, Knots Landing was the # 1 primetime soap ever to be broadcast on CBS... my mother and I never missed a single episode, we watced each and every single one and enjoyed it to the utmost as if we lived there with them.
all I can say is "God Bless the entire cast" and Thank You all for being a part of our lives... I feel truely blessed to have watced you and welcome you into my living room every Thursday night "you've all done an outstanding job" and I Thank you!!!
I first saw Knots Landing when I was sixteen in 1981 and I was hooked. Hearing the theme tune sends me right back to those days. As loyal fans we need to support Joan Van Ark because it is evident she has become a victim of the Hollywood 'stay young forever syndrome'. Her self worth shouldn't depend on how she looks. She is a good actress and has a natural beauty. It's okay to grow old
@2002ibiza You are absolutely right! I loved her, and I would love her the same no matter how she looks, but today so many actors fall into the trap. We fans don't care about a few wrinkles if your acting is good. We love the characters you portray, and Joan, you are still Valene to me!! Still beautiful.
The chick that says I got no-one else to hate looks sooooooooooo familier from a movie? something like she was helping a alien or something that crash landed on earth..... okay I'm rambling now...
@thebionicpig You're right about the familiarity. That's Karen Allen. Remember she played Katie in Animal House (Boone's Girlfriend), and then she played Harrison Ford's Love Interest in the Indiana Jones Movies. She was also voted One Of The Ten Most Beautiful People by Harper's Bizarre before People did their 50. Hope this helps.
just to clear this up when Bobby died on Dallas Lucy remarried Mitch and moved to Atlanta 3 years later she split up with him and came back to Dallas 2 years later she left the show again her character went to Europe to run an art gallery. in 1992 Mack acknowledged Lucy was in Europe after they thought Val was dead. so i guess over time they did go with the dream. because that was Dallas's continuity of Lucy.
Wow, my mother LOVED this show! It's mother's day and she is loving that I am showing her all the old TV intros! This, Dynasty, and Falcon Crest were her favorites!!
Interesting to note how this series began as very much a domestic soap opera (and a very compelling and well executed one), and then evolved slowly over the next thirteen seasons into a thriller involving political scandals, mob dealings, etc.
I was wondering why Richard & Laura's house was the only backyard without a swimming pool, but then, toward the end of the opening, it appears their backyard didn't have enough room because of it's proximity to the highway behind their house.
of couse you want season 2 theme Paul0307, that's because Donna Mills joined the cast and Abby started to break up every married couple in the cul de sac
yes because the cast of Knots wasnt in Pam's dream, so technically Bobby is still dead as far as the characters on Knots are concerned. The producers of these two shows made a bad decision when they thought out that dream storyline because it effectively stopped all future crossovers from each show
@bette1908 I agree! I loved when Bobby came to Knots Landing...he was the best when it came to the show because he was always rooting for Gary and Valene. Bobby was a Southworth in regard to doing the right thing but a Ewing when it came time to kick butt! Bobby and Pam, Gary and Val forever!
@vidhead85 I think they should have had Lucy on more, espescially when Gary had the affair with Abby. I would have loved to see some Abby/Lucy scenes.
They really should make a special with both those couples and have the audience ask ?s about those two. they were my favorite prime time couples..My favd knots are Greg and Laura, Karen and Mack, and of course Abby and Gary! I have to say I didn't like how they wasted Kenny and Ginger they could;ve done more with them but I guess they weren't popular enough...anyone got any ideas why they left?
screenjims, I'm right there with you. This really was "back in the day" for me. I just bought season one on DVD and I really recommend it for any true Knots fan. I ended up loving Knots much more than Dallas. Karen and Val rocked, and Abby was the best bitch ever!!!!!
I agree. I really loved the first 4 seasons when it was still the original "Knots" and the episodes were self contained...just a great one hour drama. Sumner really changed the show completely and Mack was so arrogant and smart alecky. And they lost great characters when they changed formats but they get an A+ for longevity and the ability to change with the times.
Gary and valene were recently reunited for good on the show"dallas".The are both parents of Lucy Ewing whom stayed in dallas and grew up on the ranch due to many factors.anyway, in 2nd season of D,they re-married after a long absence, and as a wedding present Miss Ellie gave them a californiatownhouse called Knots Landing.
They started on Dallas in March 1978. Val was played by the same actress but Gary was played by a different actor which was one of the best recasts ever cuz the second Gary was HOT!! Anyway they spun off to Knots Landing in December 1979 which lasted to 1993.
Maybe I invented this memory, but in Australia I seem to remember a longer opening sequence for the pilot episode, I just alwayys remember that shot of Joan Van Ark stepping outta the car looking at the beach... I think it was on BTTCDS opening
when you look at the opening, a lot of characters that were there at the beginning left the show contrary to Dallas where it stayed with the same actors and characters
he'd just done "Endless Love" movie which wa sa big hit,so decided to leave,Sid was meant to fully recover from car going over cliff, read also he asked for a big pay rise which he didn't get!
I can't remember the EXACT season - I think it was at the end of Season 3. He was in a horrible car accident. There were some shady characters that visiting Knots Landing Motors. They got tangled up with Sid and Gary and they tampered with a car Sid was driving. He careened off of a cliff. He died later during an operation so he wouldn't be paralyzed and died. That paved the way for Karen to marry Mack - who was the investigator into Sid's suspicious death. ..I watch too much television.
I'm so glad I bought the US version of the Knots Landing season 1 DVD set as the European DVD set doesn't have the intorduction to the neighbours section on the pilot.
I think Dallas, Knots Landing and Falcon Crest were all equally good in their own way. Trying to say one was better than the other isn't fair to virtues that each show has.
