@CapitanoGUC Ok. I'll take it easy *Deep Breath* -- these ideas are repeated everywhere by the people who like to see Middle Ages as wild and dark ages. Now, if you listen to real historians, they tell you the same : it's a myth. (Don't let yourself be impressed by movies like Braveheart ;o)
@30thMarch Assuming that it's like the Ozark Medieval Fortress in the USA (also by Michel Guyot), there are full-time, paid workers, as well as volunteers, interns, etc.
"We can appreciate but not really understand the medieval town. We cannot comprehend its compactness, the contiguity of all its buildings as a single uninterrupted whole. "
stop fighting about how rude one might be....just enjoy the beauty of the project......I am French living in the US and my experience showed me that idiots and nice people are everywhere in the same ratio......in the TGV between Paris and Lyon as well as the street of London or in Florida where I live ....so chill out and enjoy the show.
Maybe because it's not aimed at foreign tourists... Yet. As it gains importance, you can be sure it will become more adapted for foreigners.
But as a frenchman, yeah, when some tourists comes to me and directly speaks to me in english, i will be a lot more ill-mannered than if he made the effort to learn some basic things like saying "bonjour" or "parlez vous anglais?", instead of assuming that anyone should speak english. If you dont do this, no wonder you think most french people are rude.
We visited the castle in 2007. Amazing to see traditional crafts still in action. Unfortunately, in typical French fashion, they make ZERO allowances for non-French speaking tourists. Sorry, we don't speak French in Australia. So no English/German/Italian etc tour, no placards, no pamphlets to read - nothing. Still amazing and worthwhile though.
@TemplarX2 Seriously? I wonder what all those tourists were doing there then. And the tour guides. And the ticket sales office. And the "make a group tour booking" link on their website.
Amazing site, poor for non-natives. Greece and Italy were way better catering for multiple foreign languages but that's France for you.
@Mububban23 France has 80 million tourists a year. I don't think give a crap. In France, they speak French. If you can't speak french, hire a translator.
@TemplarX2 Italy has 43 million tourists a year. They give a crap. Greece has 18 million. They give a crap. Signs in English, Greek, French & Spanish from memory. They give a crap BECAUSE of their tourists. France has some lovely people, but also the rudest people I've ever met, and I've travelled a little bit.
Still, if I ever get back to France, I'd love to see the castle again and how it's progressing. The roof wasn't done when we visited but I believe it's up now. I've got till 2020 :-)
They are not Amish !!! They are manual workers who are interested in growing up in their own job and who are excited by this very big project.,very big deal ! They have no modern machines... It is in BURGONDY (department of YONNE) and the castle is called GUEDELON.
@ClamLuvr bullshit ... there is no amish in france : is not religious "things" like amish in USA ...
