Gotta say, Buddhism is COOL! If a person becomes a Jehovah Witness, Muzlim, or even a homosexual, society in general shuns them (not personally speaking). But becoming a Buddhist, everyone says thats cool.
Check out with Chung Tai Zen Center of Houston. This Zen temple doesn't charge for meditation nor Buddhism lectures. Chung Tai Chan Monastery is the main temple which is one of the most prominent temples in Taiwan. I believe it doesn't charge anything to go though its Buddhism education to become a monk or nun. Its phone number is 1-281-568-1568 (in US).
I contacted Great Vow about a retreat there. They refused to accommodate my disability and intimated that I was just being lazy in my practice, so I decided to not risk staying there.
@Sakedrinker007 That looks like the chinese character for "sky" . Calligraphy has the purpose of - as a chinese proverb goes - "repairing the body" and "nurturing the mind/character".
the problem i have with this is that if one desires to become a zen monk one has to pay for the privilege. why do you charge someone to become a monk or zen priest. i dont think this is correct. it seems that any zen monestary or zen center in the United States is concerned more with making money than it is with practicing buddhism. i think it is a shame. unless one is wealthy in america, one cannot take the path of buddhism
@obscure1956 I live in Europe and we don't charge money for going to a monastery. If you are seriously in the concerns of going to a monasery, you nmight consider wanting to go to the origin countries of the Zen way or Europe.
In Europe ? me too. Why don't you go to Thich Nhat Hanh's monastery in France, "village de pruniers"? His teaching is very simple to practice. Thich Nhat Hanh is an atypical zen with more than 100 books published . It seems there is also in England, Italie and Germany but I am not sure. If not, you can find other monasteries but unfortunately I don't know. Go to internet and tape " Thich Nhat Hanh" please.

That is absolutely racist and hilariously misguided... especially since Christianity originated in the Middle East!
White people then, in your line of thinking, should follow the pagan gods of ancient Northwestern Europe. I guess all white Christians better reject the faith they care about and grew up with... and learn to worship Odin!
How can I tell if I should be a buddhist or should not? I live in Europe, but it could be I'm adopted. On the other hand, if I'm not adopted then my father is still Asian and my mother white, so they say.
It's a good thing I'm not completely blind, than I would not even have read your comment and not know anything about it.
a buddhist teacher isn't hard to find, i'm a practising buddhist and have been for my whole life. there are many soto zen monasteries around and you can find one, it doesnt really matter which one
@ilovejapan888 there are many zen buddhism centers and teachers in connecticut. try dharmaweb or buddhanet. new haven and coventry connecticut in particular have places where you can practice and receive teaching
