  • How much does the least expensive earthship cost? Is there any way I can make this thing more defensible against marauders that will try to attack my earthship when the government collapses? :O

  • @mikeknight4u I wouldn't suppose it should cost too much since from what I've seen basically all you need are clay/adobe/cement (depending on climate) old tires old cans and old bottles. If you can get all that recyclable stuff then you'd probably only need to pay for cement or clay if you decide to make it yourself. As for the second questio ant type of heavy artillery will suit you just fine. This house is actually quite resistant to fires and such :)

  • @xxlovelessxxalicious

How much to upgrade that mutt to a Rottweiler with body armor?

  • @mikeknight4u I've seen people make them for as little as $10k. Depends how much material you use from the site itself (dirt, etc.) and how much salvage you use (old doors/windows). They're cheap as hell to make. It's made of bags or tires filled with dirt. And dirt is, well...dirt cheap! :)

  • peace from mississippi

  • @jmg1957 backatcha!

  • Fire was ambiance. I was there in November. Hot days, cool nights. A very nice place!

  • thank you for video :)

  • No, it was fabulous!

  • @crickethanna wait... was it fabulous?

    I couldn't tell with the echo ;D

  • @ovandocarter that would depend on each person.

  • to think that you could liv4e there without spending a dime forever. god damn, how much does it cost to have one built?

  • in side the earthship is it cold day and night

  • Thank for the video! Can these home be built in Illinois? Also do have people that built Earthship for a living? Thanks!

  • Is taos like the only place these things are being made. I know housing laws are strict but damn really?

  • @AKAOJ

Search for Earthships and you will find them everywhere!

I just stayed there one night.

  • @AKAOJ No. And it's not just here in the US but in England, Scotland, Japan, Australia, etc.

  • I like this but it looks so dark

  • Beautiful and luxurious rustic-modern-post-apocalyptic living at its finest! lol 

  • I wonder if we have Earthship buildings in North Carolina

  • It is a very beautiful home. My main questions are, Water? Food? If you were to live there independed of out side sources, where would you get food and water? You are in the desert. An Earth house is only great if you can really LIVE there. Otherwise it becomes a beautiful cemetary. I am curious your answer.

    Peace.

    K.K.

  • Hey John, can I answer this?

  • Hey, Please. I really want to understand how someone can really live in a desert with out outside assistance.

    Thanks.

    John.

  • Hey John, check out earthship channel here on YouTube, and also earthship (dot) net for additional info. The concept is sound, and is in practice as I write this.

  • @Kittenkattan i think many people learn to live with less.. time is money... if you find a way to balance needing less money then you can balance your time to working less.. and when you say live in the desert... taos is a small town but there is enough work to support yourself... depending on what you do it can be less of a issue..

  • @fobgirl19 you sound as if you know a lot. Can I ask if computer technicians get paid well there?? I would really like to live in an earth ship and want to know if there is work there to support us of that sort. That is if u know of course ^-^

  • It is in Taos, New Mexico. Plenty of everything close by!

  • The earthship are designed to give you water via rain, and food from the plant life (indoor, and out)

  • Also keep in mind you and keep animals for eatting too.

  • @Kittenkattan

they are set up with green houses and stuff

    and cisterns to collect water

i dont know if they use what we use here in kansas for water also

but you could (if there is dew like in kansas) use a diagonally positioned metal with little hills in it and half-barrels to catch the water that condenses and falls into the barrels

    i would use that here

im not sure what they use usually besides the rain catchers

  • You grow your food in your own home and water comes from rain. There is large cistern under the house which houses the water.

  • @Kittenkattan the intention of a earthship is to be entirely self sustaining.. with the use of bleeding edge modern farming technology the farming yields in a desert can be greatly increased but remember in the desert you dont get alot of rain.. a earthship doesnt catch rain just not enough for 100% home grown food.. if someone is looking for more food growning capacity you maybe looking at a larger catchment area, water storage and hydroponics... and Sheltering plants from dry air

  • @Kittenkattan I know you posted this a year ago, but in case you do see this: You get your water from rain water, and all those plants inside can be used for food (maybe not the flowers), but you can grow peppers, tomatoes, onions etc. Since they are grown inside you can have them year round. You could also have a green house for additional plants too.

  • looks comfy

  • Oh, Yeeaahh........

  • I love the earth ships but we need to find another way to build them. Everything about the water and energy systems is fantastic, the passive solar heating & earthbermed walls are great as well, but using old tires as the very core of the foundation is a bad idea. Granted it is cheaper than concrete but has no one considered the health issues? Those tires are breaking down very slowly and the whole time they are releasing carcinogenic gases into the walls. Hello cancer!!

  • tires contain about 30 kinds of synthetic rubber, 8 types of carbon black, steel cord, polyester,

nylon, steel bead wire, silica and 40 different kinds of chemicals, waxes, oils and pigments.

Tire rubber contains heavy metals like zinc and cadmium, hydrocarbons, latex, and sulfur-containing

compounds. These particles aggravate respiratory problems in human beings.

  • It's already been proven that they don't off gas as you proclaim.

  • Tires do give off gas, just in trace amounts. Claiming that tires do not break down over time is like claiming they are eternal. I never claimed they vented a lot of gas. It's just that even the tiny amount that do give off is compounded when the house contains hundreds of them. The EPA is reviewing their earlier studies and University of Washington's toxicologist Steve Gilbert says tires do offgas when warm. I love the earthships, we just need to make sure they are not poisonous to humans.

  • @beermangary There are other ways to get cancer. You know the radiation that cancer patients have to go through? Patients who go through radiation therapy are more likely to have secondary cancers later in life. Asbestos causes lung cancer and mesothelioma. And you may not know you've even been exposed until some years later, when symptoms of lung cancer or mesothelioma show up.

  • I would love to live in one like that, pack some synths in there and make music all day!

I thinks the walls should be all native rocks or plain old concrete.

  • Agreed, some materials research should be done. Other than that, looks cosy!

  • I sooooooooo want one!!!!!!!

  • The only thing missing at the Earthship Community outside Taos is the variety of different hobbies or leisure to choose from (plenty of them) to make it the ultimate utopian place in the US :)

  • I live in Sweden, Northern Europe but I would LOVE to go live in an Earthship in the United States one day. That would be friggin awesome! If I pay the ticket to the US and the night at the Earthship, will you then join me Hanna? :)

  • Ya, sure, you bet!

    I am so there!

    HA!

  • i am really interested in purchasing an earthship in the near future (i live in new england). how did u arrange a stay ? could u tell me who to contact for a short stay ? and how much it costs ? thanx..

    so beautiful there !!!

  • wow , really beutifully made ,i love the contrasts of the bottles and the filler (cement or cob?) & how the light filters through them. i really love it , so inspiring and shows much needed appreciation for the earths limited resources. this kinda thing really needs more exposure

  • Dear Chadillac19,The temp day inside was hot when I got there, but the vents cooled it off right away. Outside warm days 60's then and nights below freezing. Thanks for asking!

    Cricket

  • what was the temperature outside and the temperature in the earthship?
