Comeon this is so simple, why are they making a big deal about this, now climbing down with no rope on these cliffs, thats a challenge, climbing up? not so much
all factors in this is the toughest climb ever done in recorded history of mankind..... ofc theres higher graded routes but free soloing such height is unprecedented and its far from being an easy route (i think its 5.12b on a few pitches)
The goddamned two hour hike woulda wasted me!! But I'm a 57 year old man, disabled vet, paying for the sins of my youth. I was stationed in NAS Lemoore California during the seventies, when I was in the country, and the Yosemite and it's climbing community was very visible. I remember those days.
I have no words......This man is amazing! Talk about discipline, control, talent, etc....He's like a perfect storm of attributes a person must have to be capable of, brave enough, and crazy enough to even consider such feats. *slow clap*
the fact that i get sweaty hands watching this video pisses me off because if i was on that wall my body would be actively trying to kill me. Scumbag body.
the thing I like best about alex is his attitude. He doesn't climb for the popularity, the fame, none of that. He climbs because he loves to climb. I feel that if he were the only person in the world he would still be free soloing and climbing huse pieces of nature.
@ShoreRider2 wow.. my hands never get sweaty.. but after i read your comment i realized my hands were like leaking with sweat and my feet feel warm...
@mpchead621 I know! totally weird right?! this video was amazing, really took you to the height and made you feel like you were there. Wonder why though, you'd think that the body would want to keep the hands dry so you didn't lose grip!
this is funny because me and my friends who are all athletes were debating the hardest and most demanding sports yesterday...and watching this now i realize no athlete on the planet has got shit on alex honnold. Physical upper body strength, mental toughness, endurance, calmness, poise, moxy. Everything it takes to be a world class athlete this kid has AND some. So impressed because i can say i wouldnt even attempt any of these WITH the best p
@unkledenden that's an interesting question......I bet those 2 ratios are pretty darn close......Because lot's of people die in car accidents but look at all the cars on the road.....conversely, I'm not sure many people die via rock climbing but look at how few freesolo (thus, any death would be significant)......pretty tough question to answer.....You should both cool it because I think you both got a point!
this kid is crazy my mom said her stomach was going out of control with butterflies and i think it ok for him to love the sport but it was not ok that he took the mini van not cool man not cool so keep climbing never give up but i think that u should celebrate when u make it to the top so be strong and nice try to keep cool on the wall when u were on that wall but don't try and tell me that u weren't scared on that wall cuz i kno u were scared up there well nice smliein to the camera bye !
unfortunately most Soloists (and especially free soloists) go too early.
John Bachar, Dan Osman, Mike Reardon, Tobin Sorenson...because they either do something stupid (Dan Osman and Mike Reardon) or don't know when to stop (John Bachar).
Free soloing is a tough activity, and I give props to those who do it, it shouldn't be activity climbers aspire to master...
Not exactly a death sentence for the perfect. Bachar died making a comeback at 52, Messner never died, Peter Croft is still climbing. Henry Barber who soloed the sentinel in the 70s is still alive (Not sure where Long got that idea that it hadn't been soloed).
He said he checks his routes first , he first climbs with rope 3-4 times before thinking of doing it solo..he coud have just easily made his route...indeed it takes a lot of guts to do what he is doing but still his not crazy...he first checks if he can do it and that's the most important thing i think..knowing your limits :P
11:59 - 12:11 terrifies me and almost makes me physically ill .. this guy is incredible .. he deserves a lot of success in his life .. he's 'one of the special ones'
@unkledenden yeah all that 'silly shit' white people do is why you're typing on a computer and have all those other 'goodies' that you can't live without dickhead .. whites take risks and innovate .. you sit at home sucking on your thumb making stupid comments like this
@dblasonato I'm betting he's on routes that have been climbed and 'set' so to speak. These routes are usually found in books (available at REI or wherever) There's always a first ascent for anything, though. With the risks involved i'm sure he wants to be on something that is known to be 'do-able' rather then hitting a crack-less area and having to down climb.
I'm a seriously disabled person, with a child. I'd love to be able to run, to ride a bike, to walk in the woods, so when I see someone with a functioning body doing something that he has a one in two chance of surviving, it makes me want to scream. He should walk mile in my shoes, and see if he would still take such a huge chance with his incredibly precious life. It's his life, but I know a lot of people who would kill for a chance to not live in daily agonizing pain. Not inspired at all.
@drenM1A1 I'm sorry to hear that but ever heard of that saying, "you have to live your life." To him, rockclimbing is life......he has far better than a 1 in 2 chance of surviving.......I'd say it's more like 99.5% on something like the climb shown on here. The possibility of an error is always present but I think that outside variables (water, rock breaks, a bird, etc) are the only things that'll derail him.
As I said though, I get your point and it gets me nervous watching....
@pdbland1 He may very well die. But I bet he feels more alive on that cliff than most of us do down here. I hope he continues to do this (successfully) until he loses the love for it - and then finds something..maybe more safe..to focus his passion to.
