@MrColton9898 Anything above 18 inches is good. I havea salvo with 22 inch barrel, and it shoots accuracte to 50-75 yards maybe. Don't get a flatline, its a waste of money and is very touchy with velocity.
@MrColton9898 - it's not very accurate, compared to some barrels. But if you keep it in good clean and well-adjusted order, it should treat you just fine. Mine tended to be more accurate than most flatlines. I don't use it much anymore, since I now usually play with precision shooting instead of range.
@VinnieDain424 - Yes, it provides backspin on the ball, creating the "Magnus Effect". It is the same effect that keeps an airplane in the air (low pressure above, high pressure below). So, the ball spins backwards, but travels forward on a flatter trajectory.
If you look inside the barrel, you'll notice it's more like sandpaper instead of a smooth bore. This grips the ball, so it can impart that spin. The bend forces the ball to the top of the barrel, so the correct spin is imparted.
To get the best performence out of my flatline what do i need to do? i just an a5 yesterday with a flatline i havent really messed with the velocity and the balls are vearing to the left and right some times.. do i just need to turn my velocity down?
@Stephanchick - Keep your velocity between 265-280fps. User good quality paint only. Try to use a real consistent power source - use a regulator, if possible (yes, even with HPA, just to be safe).
Depends on a lot of things...If you are not able to get some really good paintballs i would not go with Flatline..It will chop the cheaper balls like crazy...If you go with Apex DO NOT go with the stock barrel with the apex. Find a Apex Ready barrel but they are having trouble making those barrels now so you have either the flatline or the 14 inch. go with flatline if you want or if you are gonna upgrade later on go with a cheaper 14 inch barrel.
Next time you go to your field you can either buy a small case or find a paintball on the ground that looks pretty clean. Then take one of the paintballs and do whats called the Kool-Aid Test...If you dont know how just google or youtube it. Its pretty simple. The lower the oil in the ball the better, this means the balls will not chop as much and if they do it isnt all oily and will clean easily. Or email your field see what paint they use and find reviews about the paint online.
get the flatline. i was just using it today and in the first second of the game i shot across the field 3x and hit the guy i was aiming at right in the face... best barrel
hey wat kind of paint do u use for ur flatline and a5 in general....ive been trying out acouple differant kinds but im just trying to get differant opinions
I have a big question on my A5 but it doesnt have to do with my flatline. Ok, i have a standard tippmann a5 with a flatline and I use a remote line with a 300 psi hpa tank. after every few shots I shoot, the a5 just starts shooting automatic with just air coming out with NO paintballs....If you could tell me the problem that would be very very very helpful!
how accurate is this gun exactly ive herd from some people its realyl accurate and has great distance ive herd from others that the distance is great but its not the accurate
the gun is great, distance is good, accuracy is okay, the barrel really makes up for it, accuracy and distance is GREAT with this barrel. but thats just me ; )
it makes it shoot about 100ft farther. it doesn't increase accuracy though. however, if you want to keep the accuracy the same as it was before you put the flatline on you have to calibrate your gun and barrel correctly like he shows in the vid.

Buddy you are wrong about the Battle Swab and the "grains" of the barrel. 1. A cloth like swab that runs through ANY barrel will still have contaminants in it from the previous use no matter how well you clean it. 2. A battle swab would be the worst choice because those "grains" in there would catch some clothe from your last "swab", therefore the fibers get caught on the swab and chop a paintball within the next ten shots that you take.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
3. If you were a true scenario player, you would know that clothe like materials erode the metal very slowly and therefore decrease accuracy! 4. Those grains do not cause the spin in the ball. You were right in your last comment that said that it was the Magnus effect. 5. A rubber disc design actually goes in between the pertrusions with in the barrel and therefore gets a cleaner effect. And finally, the rubber disc design, since it cleans it better, it wont erode the barrel.
Don't know what to say to this. I'll let your comment score (you know, the "Thumbs down" points you're scoring) speak for themselves. And to imply I'm not "true scenario player" is nothing short of arrogance. My points aren't simply things I make up. They are taken from experience, as well as conversations with THOUSANDS of scenario players from around the world. Nice try. Battle swab wins amongst them all.
I think your right. I'd say a battle swab is the best. I don't see a tiny "fiber" getting caught in the barrel and breaking a paintball. What kind of paintball breaks from touching a .1mm hair? Anyway, nice video.
If you have an A5, you loosen up the front of the gun, put the barrel in sideways (front screw at a 90* angle, facing the cyclone feeder), turn it clockwise so that is is facing the right way, and tighten your gun back up.
You laugh, but that just means you don't know how the barrel works. That bend is what creates the spinning, and thus creates the Magnus effect. It is this effect that enable the flatline to project a paintball over longer distances.

I won an a-5 from lapco at ok dday 08 and it had a 8" lapco bigshot on it and i was actually looking into getting a stiffi barrel for it, how do u think that would do?
Hey im thinking of getting a A5 with the flatline barrel its coming with a Co2 tank. Thanks
i been lookin at flatlines for my gun, i didnt know that velocity had an effect but if the best is around 270 then im good but is there any real difference in quality or performance between flatlines of different prices or brands?
I'm curious to see what "other" flatlines you've found. To my knowledge there is but one flatline for the A5, one for the 98C, and one for the X7. All were made by Tippmann for Tippmann markers. You might be referring to UMS customizations for flatlines.
I put mine in hot water and then ran a squeege through it. This ended up pulling out the sand inside of it. It's shipping to be re sandblasted at tippman. Never use a squeege in it. Works best around 270 fps.
I have a tippmann A*5 with the flatline barrel, Im not sure what my velocity is but ill find out saturday at adventure zone and Im using their paint Im not sure what it is.
When the paint bears to the left try checking if the barrel is correctly aligned. If the problem still consists then try a different brand of paint, usually the paint is what messes everything up. Cheaper paint means worse shots. I have the X7 and tried the flatline, didn't really catch me, I mean slap a 14-16 inch barrel and you pretty much got the same range, and don't need expensive paint. I'm looking to get my hands on the apex, so if anyone has any info contact me.
Well, most of the idea is to keep a flat-line (Thus "Flatline") trajectory. It helps to fire under branches and such. Also, properly maintained and adjusted, the flatline accuracy isn't all that bad. I had no major loss of accuracy out to 150 feet.
I am the proud owner of the tenacious tippmann a5 and i was wondering...what barrel would you recomend for woods ball and which would you recomend for speed ball? i want the most accurate and efficient barrel i can get. what do you use?
There are FAR FAR FAR FAR too many to list, and all would be the correct answer. And don't separate paintball in terms of barrel usage. I use one barrel per marker, and that's it. It's what I find works best with that marker. For accuracy and efficiency, though, look into barrel kits, so you can arrange a good paint-to-barrel match.
Might want to re-watch the video. The barrel is curved, to create the Magnus Effect. Since this is a hideous look to a marker, the housing is there for aesthetics.
They're mostly the same marker. If you want to customize your marker with sights, and other bolt-on hardware, then go with the X7. If you want simplicity, go with the A5, and get some TechT or JCS mods later on (for the cyclone).
Just for maximum effectiveness, is all. As for the first question, SOME of the X7 items can fit on the A5. You'll have to be more specific. Head on over to the SpecOps forums and do some searching. You'll get plenty of info there.
You are very informative. This video actually helped me buy the Flatline. I have a couple uestions: Where can I get a battle swab such as the one you have? I have a Tippmann A-5, should there be any reason to clean the inside of the gun (like after a good woodsball game) and if I do, how? Thanks?
I own an A5 that I have really enjoyed, but recently Ive noticed that my barrel fitting is a bit loose and its drivin me crazy. Is that a common A5 issue?
You will not get distance AND accuracy. You should choose distand OR accuracy. Flatline for distance, and you'll need to test for barrel length for accuracy. Anything over 14" is usually a waste, anyway.
You may have noticed I made a video on this question. There is no, and never will be, anything that is ever "the best" on ANYTHING to do with paintball. You must find your own playing style, and then get the gear and parts that complement it. The ONLY way to ever do this is to try it out yourself. I use an 8" barrel. Some swear by their Apex barrels. Others still swear by PPS Brass barrels. What is "best" for me is not "best" for everybody else.
There is no "best" of anything in paintball. I use a Lapco 8" Bigshot because I prefer the slight increase in accuracy. However, I still occasionally shoot the flatline.
is this more accurate than the M107 kit and barrel for th a5, i like it for accuracy but i want more range.i heard that if you break a ball in the barrel, bye bye accuracy. is that true? adn how bad and will it last? i was planing on buying the quick connect bolts for it.
I'm not familiar with the M107 kit. The flatline will give you more range, but you will lose some accuracy. With proper tuning, you can keep it fairly accurate.
As for the loss of accuracy, that's pretty much true. However, most of it can be regained by use a battle swab (not a squeegie).
Once you take off the shroud, you will see a little hole on the adapter, just above where the barrel tube fits into the rear adapter. Using a small hex wrench, you need to loosen that screw, adjust the barrel tube, and re-tighten.
I really should make a new version of this vid. Stupid broken camera.
hey man i loved the video. it really helped on getting to know my barrel. but i do have one question, when i am aligning the lines, the actual barrel seems to be pretty snug, so do i have to force it to twist into place? or is there some trick to that.
It'll work, but it won't be in prime condition. If it's too low, the barrel can't put the spin on the ball. If it's too high, you'll get a lot of breaks or wingers. Most people have had the best luck between 265-280fps.
You can, and some recommend that. However, as long as the water is pretty hot, that's fine. The heat and water is what gets the paint out of the sandblasted surface inside.
Well, at least you have an idea. The other video was more for the people who ask "what's the best", as if somebody else's answer was going to be the golden nugget.
If you want a horizontal foregrip, there's really only an Opsgear shroud kit, or SpecialOps A5A2 foregrip. Everything else is vertical.
I just got a flatline for my A-5 and I followed your instructions on aligning the etched lines inside the barrell but they didn't budge. What should I do different.
I removed the shroud and all I see is the screw hole. I guess the set screw is in that hole, but i cant seem to loosen it. What sized allen wrench should i use and/or can you show how to do it in a vid?
Use a tougher-shelled paint. Most people report best results with Marballizers, Evil, or All-star paint. Inferno and Blaze usually do pretty well, as long as it's not the "field" versions.
A comment on the post by 'Watchemfal - I thought the flatline was mounted to the A-5'
No, not on the Stock items, its usually around $100 extra.
Also, if you live in england and are wishing to buy the flatline barrel, Dont buy it in england unless you can get it for around £60 because its cheaper to buy online from Canada/America and have it shipped over. Thanks
No. The surface being sandblasted is simply the same surface, roughened up. It's not exactly just glued on sandpaper. There's no adhesive to wear down.
great vid, but my notch is a tiny bit off and it could be a bit closer. it seems in there really tight though, how can you fine tune adjust the notch to the cut on the barrel? thanks man
at the bottom of the screw hole above the notch, there's another hole for an L-Wrench which you need to losen to turn the barrel. i had the same question and took it to my local paintball dealer and he showed me.
I switched to the 8" Lapco Bigshot barrel. While I lost some range, I preferred the accuracy. I am considering going back to it for a while with my new setup.
hey great video
i just bought a 2011 tippmann a5 and as we all know the stock barrel sucks
would you recomend this barrel or should i go with the new apex 2 barrel?

I have a tippmann A*5 with the flatline barrel, Im not sure what my velocity is but ill find out saturday at adventure zone and Im using their paint Im not sure what it is.
PYROMANIC373 3 years ago
I figured it out my velocity was way to high I put it down to about 290 fps and it works a lot better.
PYROMANIC373 3 years ago
When the paint bears to the left try checking if the barrel is correctly aligned. If the problem still consists then try a different brand of paint, usually the paint is what messes everything up. Cheaper paint means worse shots. I have the X7 and tried the flatline, didn't really catch me, I mean slap a 14-16 inch barrel and you pretty much got the same range, and don't need expensive paint. I'm looking to get my hands on the apex, so if anyone has any info contact me.

The realignment of the barrel is covered in the Flatline V2 video.

flatlines are only good for like 100 feet then the accracy getts worese then before
jstepano 3 years ago
Well, most of the idea is to keep a flat-line (Thus "Flatline") trajectory. It helps to fire under branches and such. Also, properly maintained and adjusted, the flatline accuracy isn't all that bad. I had no major loss of accuracy out to 150 feet.
JackRockBLC 3 years ago
I am the proud owner of the tenacious tippmann a5 and i was wondering...what barrel would you recomend for woods ball and which would you recomend for speed ball? i want the most accurate and efficient barrel i can get. what do you use?
Funkychunkymonkey33 3 years ago
There are FAR FAR FAR FAR too many to list, and all would be the correct answer. And don't separate paintball in terms of barrel usage. I use one barrel per marker, and that's it. It's what I find works best with that marker. For accuracy and efficiency, though, look into barrel kits, so you can arrange a good paint-to-barrel match.

thanks alot

iv got a flatline on my a5, but after about 100ft the paint bears off to the left or right, even so is more accurate than other barrels i have used

whats with the big ass housing it there is just a regular barrel inside??
1BeastlyBarry1 3 years ago
Might want to re-watch the video. The barrel is curved, to create the Magnus Effect. Since this is a hideous look to a marker, the housing is there for aesthetics.
JackRockBLC 3 years ago
yyyyyeah sorry i commented at the start of the video cuz i was really curious as to how the flatline barrels work.
1BeastlyBarry1 3 years ago
Ah, no problem. I highly suggest watching the Flatline Barrel - V2 video I have on this account. It shows several items more clearly.
JackRockBLC 3 years ago
hey how is that a5? im pickin one up tommorow and im kinda worried if i made the right choice between the a5 and the x7.
1BeastlyBarry1 3 years ago
They're mostly the same marker. If you want to customize your marker with sights, and other bolt-on hardware, then go with the X7. If you want simplicity, go with the A5, and get some TechT or JCS mods later on (for the cyclone).
JackRockBLC 3 years ago
cant you put some of the x7 accesories on the a5? and whuts wrong with the a5 cyclone? ive been told to upgrade that already, but why.
1BeastlyBarry1 3 years ago
Just for maximum effectiveness, is all. As for the first question, SOME of the X7 items can fit on the A5. You'll have to be more specific. Head on over to the SpecOps forums and do some searching. You'll get plenty of info there.
JackRockBLC 3 years ago
You are very informative. This video actually helped me buy the Flatline. I have a couple uestions: Where can I get a battle swab such as the one you have? I have a Tippmann A-5, should there be any reason to clean the inside of the gun (like after a good woodsball game) and if I do, how? Thanks?
cpo335 3 years ago
1. Head to nearly any paintball website and look for a battle swab. Redz makes a good version, and is my favorite.
2. Yes, clean your marker after every day of play. Check out my A5 Maintenance- Redux video on this account.
JackRockBLC 3 years ago
why do you say to put all parts like barrels in boling water?.. my question is: why not cold water?.. thanks posting your videos! really nice help!
Manzancene 3 years ago
The hot water lifts the paint out of the sandblasting better.
JackRockBLC 3 years ago
I own an A5 that I have really enjoyed, but recently Ive noticed that my barrel fitting is a bit loose and its drivin me crazy. Is that a common A5 issue?
gnibdnaem 3 years ago
Use some electrical tape or cheap nail polish, and put it around the barrel adapter (the part that goes into the receivers).
JackRockBLC 3 years ago
for distance an accuracy should i buy a 16', 14' or 18' for an A5? Or should i stay with a flatline.
LiamBannon 4 years ago
You will not get distance AND accuracy. You should choose distand OR accuracy. Flatline for distance, and you'll need to test for barrel length for accuracy. Anything over 14" is usually a waste, anyway.
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
ok thanks..what would you perfer otehr than flatline for distance?
LiamBannon 4 years ago
Apex. These are the only two barrels that can give you distance, due to the spin they put on the ball.
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
So what is the best all around barrel i can put on my A5
LiamBannon 4 years ago
You may have noticed I made a video on this question. There is no, and never will be, anything that is ever "the best" on ANYTHING to do with paintball. You must find your own playing style, and then get the gear and parts that complement it. The ONLY way to ever do this is to try it out yourself. I use an 8" barrel. Some swear by their Apex barrels. Others still swear by PPS Brass barrels. What is "best" for me is not "best" for everybody else.
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
Pick one: Distance OR accuracy. For distance, go with an Apex or flatline. For accuracy, I'd go with a 12" or 14" barrel.
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
would you say that this is the best barrel for the a5. you said you dont use it any more do you like something better!
pmkeith123 4 years ago
There is no "best" of anything in paintball. I use a Lapco 8" Bigshot because I prefer the slight increase in accuracy. However, I still occasionally shoot the flatline.
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
never heard of it alot of people say the boomstick is good I know its about the person preferince but have you ever tried it my friend swears by it!
pmkeith123 4 years ago
is this more accurate than the M107 kit and barrel for th a5, i like it for accuracy but i want more range.i heard that if you break a ball in the barrel, bye bye accuracy. is that true? adn how bad and will it last? i was planing on buying the quick connect bolts for it.
blackdiesel2 4 years ago
I'm not familiar with the M107 kit. The flatline will give you more range, but you will lose some accuracy. With proper tuning, you can keep it fairly accurate.
As for the loss of accuracy, that's pretty much true. However, most of it can be regained by use a battle swab (not a squeegie).
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
The barrel is really tight how do you move it to make it line up right.
TheKn0wn1 4 years ago
Once you take off the shroud, you will see a little hole on the adapter, just above where the barrel tube fits into the rear adapter. Using a small hex wrench, you need to loosen that screw, adjust the barrel tube, and re-tighten.
I really should make a new version of this vid. Stupid broken camera.

hey man i loved the video. it really helped on getting to know my barrel. but i do have one question, when i am aligning the lines, the actual barrel seems to be pretty snug, so do i have to force it to twist into place? or is there some trick to that.
thanks

got it :)

is the flatline any good, i really need to know because i am thinking about getting one, so any good advice is welcome
MarcusFenixtheMan 4 years ago
If you treat it right (requires more than most barrels), it will treat you right.
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
requires more, as in, like better paint or something
MarcusFenixtheMan 4 years ago
thx for the info dude
peacemaker181 4 years ago
You're quite welcome. As soon as I get a new camera (mine broke), I will film more.
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
o and btw i hear if you dont have the velocity adjusted just rite the faltline barrel doesnt work rite, that tru?
peacemaker181 4 years ago
It'll work, but it won't be in prime condition. If it's too low, the barrel can't put the spin on the ball. If it's too high, you'll get a lot of breaks or wingers. Most people have had the best luck between 265-280fps.

just a question will boiling water do anything to help it jw
XxThundaCatzxX 4 years ago
You can, and some recommend that. However, as long as the water is pretty hot, that's fine. The heat and water is what gets the paint out of the sandblasted surface inside.
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
I was looking for a foregrip. Any Suggestions. I know your other vid says stop asking FAQs. I want a horizontal foregrip
Thx
mjharting 4 years ago
Well, at least you have an idea. The other video was more for the people who ask "what's the best", as if somebody else's answer was going to be the golden nugget.
If you want a horizontal foregrip, there's really only an Opsgear shroud kit, or SpecialOps A5A2 foregrip. Everything else is vertical.
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
hey sir. How do you install it. Yes im a noob with the flatline

I just got a flatline for my A-5 and I followed your instructions on aligning the etched lines inside the barrell but they didn't budge. What should I do different.
CARL0Scruz 4 years ago
Did you loosen the set screw on the top of the rear adapter? You have to remove the shroud to get to it.
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
I removed the shroud and all I see is the screw hole. I guess the set screw is in that hole, but i cant seem to loosen it. What sized allen wrench should i use and/or can you show how to do it in a vid?
CARL0Scruz 4 years ago
Thanks for the info... I finally figured it out. Keep up the great vids.
CARL0Scruz 4 years ago
i have a flatline and egrip on my a5 and chop all the time.. what paint would u recommend using.. or should i just get a different barrel?
AMovingBush 4 years ago
Use a tougher-shelled paint. Most people report best results with Marballizers, Evil, or All-star paint. Inferno and Blaze usually do pretty well, as long as it's not the "field" versions.
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
what about rust
chikinbetheshiznit 4 years ago
The only things that might rust are the screws. Everything else is either coated, or aluminum (which doesn't rust if you dry it within a day or so).
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
well if you don't use your flatline barrel anymroe, you can always give it to me! (: lolz

Thanks

Paintballer1015 4 years ago
but wont the throwing of the whole assembly in boiling water mess up the sand blasted surface??
moreno91324 4 years ago
No. The surface being sandblasted is simply the same surface, roughened up. It's not exactly just glued on sandpaper. There's no adhesive to wear down.
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
great vid, but my notch is a tiny bit off and it could be a bit closer. it seems in there really tight though, how can you fine tune adjust the notch to the cut on the barrel? thanks man
jaymp24 4 years ago
at the bottom of the screw hole above the notch, there's another hole for an L-Wrench which you need to losen to turn the barrel. i had the same question and took it to my local paintball dealer and he showed me.
icodeviruses 4 years ago
i'm curious, why did you decide not to use the flatline anymore?
icodeviruses 4 years ago
I switched to the 8" Lapco Bigshot barrel. While I lost some range, I preferred the accuracy. I am considering going back to it for a while with my new setup.
JackRockBLC 4 years ago
at what range does the flatline start to lose its accuracy exactly? how off is it?
icodeviruses 4 years ago
Thanks for the great vid.
Well done.
