So you are saying it is not possible to determine the quality of a game until you are good at it? O_o" Or is it possible you can determine that even before ever playing it.
That's funny, because it's not even an RTS really. So if you can't even get that right, how are we supposed to take the rest of your very rare opinion as the truth?
Then again, seeing as Total War isn't TECHNICALLY an RTS, it sorta has to be lumped into the larger category of "strategy games". So we have to re-look at the potential for this... series... to be in the top 100. I MIGHT be able to list off 100 strategy game series and just knock Total War off that list, but that would take a long time, so let's just compromise and say it's between #90 and #100, ok?

Mupp33n, it seems to me like you're just answering all of Arm4's "reasons" (if that's what I should call them) with insults and put-downs. Saying someone has bad taste in games and is wrong is hardly a response to valid reasons.
I personally can't be on either side, since I've never played the game and haven't watched much about it, but it doesn't take a genius to see someone who's arguing just for the sake of arguing.
Mupp33n had no suggestion for what I should do with his second round of spamming so I went with my default approach and blocked him. I also removed a GREAT deal of his spam. I made sure to leave in anything even remotely worthwhile INCLUDING a some of the degrading things said about me. I tried to be objective in my cleaning, but I doubt Mupp33n will be satisfied and will consider this to be an act of treason or something.
Total war does suck...it has one of the worst graphics and the gameplay is really bad... but everyone has its own criterias...maybe you just like sucky games...i would recomend Age of empire 3...or Empire Earth...they are way better than total war ;)
BAD GRAPHICS? Ever seen Empire Total War zoomed in, or even Medieval 2 Total War, maxed out, with antialiasing (for jaggies) and everything else on a nice 1920x1200 resolution? Beats more other RTS games out there.
If you like AOE3 then I understand you dont like total war, man AOE3 suck dick and, AOE 1 was good but AOE 2 was the best, anyhow, both games you mentioned SUCK.

The problem for me (and a big one at that) is that I have sucky reactions, I have the reflexes of a paralysed Manatee. Give me a game like Pharoah and I rule. I love games that I have to think to get through, but I'm also aware that there are games that are great but I suck at. They are still great games, but they just don't suit me.
I don't think you and Total War games will ever quite hit it off.... it doesn't mean they are bad.
Liking a game is a preference, and preferences are a subset of characteristics. I will readily judge people on their characteristics; as does everyone.
Do preferences affect other people's respect for you? Sure! If someone has a preference to live in squalor, most people will lose respect for that person.
Do preferences affect other people's opinion of your worth? Sure! If someone has a sexual preference to animals or other worse things, many would argue that that person is worth less.
Most of the best driving simulators (like NFS and BOP) aren't nearly as realistic as you would think. Sure there are some pretty decent physics but they also allow a lot of forgiveness that makes it...
When I mean forgiveness I'm talking about NFS cars never having critical failures and the grip being just a bit over the top. It doesn't make the game easier or harder, it just allows reality to slip away, just a bit.
Also, NFS is far from the best racing games, they are nowhere near simulators. NFS went downhill @ prostreet, undercover and shift. They all suck, comparing to MW, Carbon, Underground and the classic hot pursuit games.
Grid, Dirt, GT5 prologue, forza 2 and 3 are better than the current NFS games, and only 2 of them are actually 'sims'. Try to find out which.
Losing respect for someone because they like a certain game makes as much sense as losing respect for someone because they like apples better than oranges.
I don't understand how someone else's preference could possibly affect you enough to justify setting up a camera, recording yourself denouncing them, then posting it on the internet.

I still think you should give this series a second chance, you've given TW enough money, why not torrent Medieval and get the LOTR mod. Most fun I've had with a game in a while. Sure, it may not last that long, but I assure you it's worth a try.
The real-time battles were awful and repetitive as was the Campaign AI, diplomacy and naval battles. The grid system was good. There was a good choice of factions you could play with custom units unique to each faction.
It was a good idea but was badly implemented. What it tried to do, and innovations it brought to the genre should be taken on and improved in a more consistent way.
If you disliked the Total War games because they "try too hard to be realistic" then you will hate ArmA 2!
I meant against the AI in a campaign. It is quite good when you are playing against a skilled opponent, but you will never see the AI do anything other than set up camp on the highest hill it can find..... it really isn't a challenge.
Rolling up the AI battle line with your cavalry once the melee units have engaged is guaranteed to win you battles.

Getting to the point where you controlled about 40 territories and every turn you would have to destroy about 3 small rebel armies because they were disrupting your trade and leaving dirty black marks on your farmland! TEDIOUS!! They would just sit there as well, they wouldn't do anything..... except move to one of your watchtowers and start playing with themselves.
Historical facts, figures and events were pretty accurate though. You could learn a bit about ancient history in it.
I don't really know what happened to the campaign after the original Total War games, but something just turned it all into crap. I really couldn't tell you what... but it just stopped being fun.
I agree completely. I never once considered the game strategic. I hated pretty much every Total War game after Viking Invasion... they just started sucking after that. Empire: Total War was the biggest stinker of all. I was highly disappointed.
Never once did I consider ANY game of the series to be strategic, including the EPIC original Total War games. I only ever played the campaign map and I let the computer decide my battles. It was only fun for their campaign aspect (in the originals).
What is strategic about lets say, Red Alert 3, Command n Conquer 3, World in Conflict, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War etc etc?
In Total War you got a campaign map and YOU decide where to fight, and who to fight, what ally to turn against, and you'll never know who will stab you and fuck up your own plans etc. In all other 'strategy' games youre just following a main campaign with barely any options except 'take this road with these 100 tanks instead of that road to the right!'
I've never been a big fan of those games, either. I can't really see the strategic element in any of those titles. But, I don't really give a shit about whether or not a game is strategic. I don't find Age of Empires II to be strategic at all, but damnit I love that game.
To be honest, I don't think there are many popular titles that are truly strategic. Truly strategic games are hard, and if they were hard, they probably wouldn't be popular. You have to dig a little deeper to find strategy.

I feel a strange urge to defend these games, as I'm a big fan of Rome:TW. I've never played any other games in the series, but from what I hear Rome was the high point. The feeling that I get from your list of reasons, specifically: 3, 4, 8, 9, 15, and 18 is that you had a hard time learning how too play, and that soured the experience for you. I'll be the first too admit that the TW games are complicated, but once mastered, I think they offer a rich and rewarding strategic experience.
I disliked the campaign. too confusing and took too much time in between turns. Like you said, it was more of a sim game.
I just made some fun scenarios, like tons of British lines rushing American militia or all cavalry vs militia or something like that. I eventually uninstalled it

I've never actually played them. I did, however, watch about 5 or 6 vidoes of the Let's Play on it that you did. I wasn't really impressed, and apparently, you weren't either. I can't really say I blame you. Just looking at the overworld was overwhelming with the huge amounts of objects on it. Then the combat scenarios were just rediculous. Not only the difficulty of manueverability, but also the amount of time it took. All in all, not a good game. But thats my opinion. (Ran out of characters).

Judgment is based on stimuli solely in the manner that that is the only way to receive information. Also, This isn't a case of me doing pot, it's me having a slightly different preference (if you look at the big picture our hobbies are in the same category). I enjoy Empire Total war mainly because of the time period it's set in I think. The main problem I had with the latest version, well there were two problems, firstly the ridiculous installation through steam and secondly the poor AI. I played through a campaign on normal first time and the AI was terrible. They didn't even load armies onto boats so god knows why the posh lady at the start tells you to hurry up and get to India before the French! Theres a big patch coming soon though.

I think that Rome total war was the best, when Medieval came out it got a bit more complicated and kind off drifted away from being just a fun to play game, but was still alright.

The problem for me (and a big one at that) is that I have sucky reactions, I have the reflexes of a paralysed Manatee. Give me a game like Pharoah and I rule. I love games that I have to think to get through, but I'm also aware that there are games that are great but I suck at. They are still great games, but they just don't suit me.
I don't think you and Total War games will ever quite hit it off.... it doesn't mean they are bad.

Most of the best driving simulators (like NFS and BOP) aren't nearly as realistic as you would think. Sure there are some pretty decent physics but they also allow a lot of forgiveness that makes it...

When I mean forgiveness I'm talking about NFS cars never having critical failures and the grip being just a bit over the top. It doesn't make the game easier or harder, it just allows reality to slip away, just a bit.

Also, NFS is far from the best racing games, they are nowhere near simulators. NFS went downhill @ prostreet, undercover and shift. They all suck, comparing to MW, Carbon, Underground and the classic hot pursuit games.
Grid, Dirt, GT5 prologue, forza 2 and 3 are better than the current NFS games, and only 2 of them are actually 'sims'. Try to find out which.

Its the age-old (not really) realism vs. fun debate. Empire Total War basically cranked realism up to 11 and then cranked the fun down to perhaps 2.
Oh, maybe it can be used for a history lecture! :)

The real-time battles were awful and repetitive as was the Campaign AI, diplomacy and naval battles. The grid system was good. There was a good choice of factions you could play with custom units unique to each faction.
It was a good idea but was badly implemented. What it tried to do, and innovations it brought to the genre should be taken on and improved in a more consistent way.
If you disliked the Total War games because they "try too hard to be realistic" then you will hate ArmA 2!

I meant against the AI in a campaign. It is quite good when you are playing against a skilled opponent, but you will never see the AI do anything other than set up camp on the highest hill it can find..... it really isn't a challenge.
Rolling up the AI battle line with your cavalry once the melee units have engaged is guaranteed to win you battles.

Getting to the point where you controlled about 40 territories and every turn you would have to destroy about 3 small rebel armies because they were disrupting your trade and leaving dirty black marks on your farmland! TEDIOUS!! They would just sit there as well, they wouldn't do anything..... except move to one of your watchtowers and start playing with themselves.
Historical facts, figures and events were pretty accurate though. You could learn a bit about ancient history in it.

I don't really know what happened to the campaign after the original Total War games, but something just turned it all into crap. I really couldn't tell you what... but it just stopped being fun.

I agree completely. I never once considered the game strategic. I hated pretty much every Total War game after Viking Invasion... they just started sucking after that. Empire: Total War was the biggest stinker of all. I was highly disappointed.
Never once did I consider ANY game of the series to be strategic, including the EPIC original Total War games. I only ever played the campaign map and I let the computer decide my battles. It was only fun for their campaign aspect (in the originals).

What is strategic about lets say, Red Alert 3, Command n Conquer 3, World in Conflict, Company of Heroes, Dawn of War etc etc?
In Total War you got a campaign map and YOU decide where to fight, and who to fight, what ally to turn against, and you'll never know who will stab you and fuck up your own plans etc. In all other 'strategy' games youre just following a main campaign with barely any options except 'take this road with these 100 tanks instead of that road to the right!'

I've never been a big fan of those games, either. I can't really see the strategic element in any of those titles. But, I don't really give a shit about whether or not a game is strategic. I don't find Age of Empires II to be strategic at all, but damnit I love that game.
To be honest, I don't think there are many popular titles that are truly strategic. Truly strategic games are hard, and if they were hard, they probably wouldn't be popular. You have to dig a little deeper to find strategy.

It could have been a decent discussion Arm, but instead it turned into something annoying.
If I play and enjoy good and bad games, that does not necessarily reflect my personality at all.
If this video asked for what others thought about the series and you were able to respect others opinions for bringing different perspectives to the discussion, that would have been great. It turned into a pseudo argument.

I feel a strange urge to defend these games, as I'm a big fan of Rome:TW. I've never played any other games in the series, but from what I hear Rome was the high point. The feeling that I get from your list of reasons, specifically: 3, 4, 8, 9, 15, and 18 is that you had a hard time learning how too play, and that soured the experience for you. I'll be the first too admit that the TW games are complicated, but once mastered, I think they offer a rich and rewarding strategic experience.

I disliked the campaign. too confusing and took too much time in between turns. Like you said, it was more of a sim game.
I just made some fun scenarios, like tons of British lines rushing American militia or all cavalry vs militia or something like that. I eventually uninstalled it

I've never actually played them. I did, however, watch about 5 or 6 vidoes of the Let's Play on it that you did. I wasn't really impressed, and apparently, you weren't either. I can't really say I blame you. Just looking at the overworld was overwhelming with the huge amounts of objects on it. Then the combat scenarios were just rediculous. Not only the difficulty of manueverability, but also the amount of time it took. All in all, not a good game. But thats my opinion. (Ran out of characters).

Judgment is based on stimuli solely in the manner that that is the only way to receive information. Also, This isn't a case of me doing pot, it's me having a slightly different preference (if you look at the big picture our hobbies are in the same category). I still don't see how stimuli affects my judgment. If I am on the jury and I see a blue jay outside would I consider the defendant innocent when I would otherwise see him guilty?

I enjoy Empire Total war mainly because of the time period it's set in I think. The main problem I had with the latest version, well there were two problems, firstly the ridiculous installation through steam and secondly the poor AI. I played through a campaign on normal first time and the AI was terrible. They didn't even load armies onto boats so god knows why the posh lady at the start tells you to hurry up and get to India before the French! Theres a big patch coming soon though.

I think that Rome total war was the best, when Medieval came out it got a bit more complicated and kind off drifted away from being just a fun to play game, but was still alright.
But now with Empire total war?
