Jeez, and I thought it was spelled Pyg. Why no tutorial on this song? The brilliant chords of the slide guitar knock me down back in 1968 when I heard it on KMPX San Francisco. Great song to listen to when your mate dumps you and you need to cry your eyes out.
Couldnt agree more. When you listen to BP playing 'Same Old Story' you suddenly realise whos band Jethro Tull was up to the point of Mick leaving. This track is the blues track to end them all. Get better and get back on the road Mick!!
Great blues! I played Drive Me in my 1st band 1973. If you were a Tull fan from the start, like me, and picked up the 2 BPig LP's when they came out, hopefully yougot the 2 Wild Turkey LP's when bassist Glen Cornick left Tull(or was fired by Anderson)
@theseventhprotocol And actually, I think that early Tull stuff would have been better had Ian & Mick took turns "being the leader", and the material would have been more diverse. Mick probably would have got sick of Ian's "proggier" concepts by the time "Aqualung" rolled 'round anyway and quit. Anyway, great track. Lancaster is aces on sax as well.
@theseventhprotocol anderson actually started on sax but he seemed to abandon that for flute jack lancaster playdr 2 saxes at once and flute like roland kirk andersons influence when blodwyn pig played fillmore east they sounded so tight and professional they must have been rehersing 20 hours a day a writer named richard kostelanetz gave them a bad review but admitted he never went to the concert?
Heard this in the backround of the movie "Almost Famous" and looked it up on Youtube and to my surprise found it. Mick Abrams from Jethro Tull and the band. Thanks to youtube I got it again!
Me too. I saw them play this song and I swear time stood stll. I owned a record store at 2nd and Broadway back then called Mother's Records. I later moved it to 6th and Wilshire...Fun Times.
I relate songs to people and places my friends brother had a membership [ they called it a key ] to the playboy club we went to the one in new york they had nothing but lounge acts [ kai winding was the musical director of the playboy club but he wasnt there] so we went to the fillmore east and blodwyn pig was performing it was great [ a writer named richard kostalanetz wrote a review of the concert in the newspaper he said it wasnt good but he wasnt there .
Many a night with BP in my Hollywood bungalow, Mary smoldering amongst the fumes... 25 a friend to my Self... Sorry Jill... bad stuff happened to me. Namaste.
Thanks...I haven't heard this in decades...still holds up...whatever happened to BP?

This Was always was my favourite Tull album because of Mick's guitar style and the jazz/blues flavour.

So give Ian partial credit for these 4 Lp's! Ha!

Mick Abrams was great on the first Tull album, ,but he got even better with BP without Ian Anderson trying to be top dog.
theseventhprotocol 2 years ago
At least he's a better bluesmusician :-)
I did not know about the top dog thing, but you're probably right, there's almost always a leader, like in everything else..
Thanks for sharing your little story.

@spilopbob
actually, that pretty much covers it.
Anderson wanted to go beyond the bluesy thing and Abrahams got the door.
