My property taxes are 4200 a year in chicago in a 3 bedroom, 2 bath condo. Which is over 50% under. I'm paying nearly two times as much as my neighbor, whose property is old and she doesn't keep it up. Everyone should pay the same damn amount. Why should someone with an OLD house get a break? The people who are building new are making the old properties worth more. It doesn't make sense!
What you're describing (and forgetting) is that a large beautiful new development next to a poor neighborhood increases the VALUE of the lesser homes. Their bottom line increases if they know how to capitalize on that -- either by selling, refi, etc...
Apostle Claver is NOT forgetting that BUT what about the old people who have lived there all their life, paid off the mortgage and then find the taxes keep going up and they no longer can afford their home ? ALSO if they refi or sell as you say the property prices are driven up as everyone does that and in time your kids no longer can afford a home in the area where they grew up. Homes are homes and should not be articicially driven up by government simply to extract more taxes from people
