My favorite part of this performance is the audience's reaction. They laugh at first, applaud, make noise, but by the end everyone is just absolutely dead silent. It's astonishing.
You came to me this morning and you handled me like... meat. ...You’d have to be a man to know how good that feels......how sweet............ My mirrored twin, my next of kin, I’d know you in my sleep and who but you would take me in,
I loved you when you opened like a lily to the heat, you see I’m just another snowman standing in the rain and sleet, who loved you with his frozen love, his second hand physique, with all he is, and all he was,
A thousand kisses deep...
I know you had to lie to me, I know you had to cheat, to pose all hot and high behind the veils of shear deceit, our perfect porn aristocrat so elegant and cheap, I’m old but I’m still into that,
I’m good at love, I’m good at hate, its in between I freeze. Been working out, but its too late, it’s been to late for years. But you look good, you really do, they love you on the street. If I could move I’d kneel for you,
a thousand kisses deep..
The autumn moved across your skin, got something in my eye, a light that doesn’t need to live, and doesn’t need to die. A riddle in the book of love, obscure and obsolete, until witnessed there in time and blood,
And I'm still working with the wine, still dancing cheek to cheek, the band is playing Auld Lang Syne, but the heart will not retreat. I ran with Diz and I sang with Ray, I never had their sweep, but once or twice they let me play
A thousand kisses deep.
I loved you when you opened like a lily to the heat, y'see I'm just another snowman standing in the rain and sleet, who loved you with his frozen love, his second hand physique, with all he is, and all he was,
I have just returned from seeing Leonard Cohen live in Sydney tonight :) All night I waited anxiously and finally he performed this exact poem in this exact manner. I was immersed. It tore at my soul. I felt like I was being beaten to death by the wings of an angel.
I was there and from the moment he came on stage me and my friend had tears running down our cheeks.......the man's a true legend and his music's amazing. If I think back to any period of my life in the last fifteen years there's a Leonard Cohen song drifting in and out
The man with a velvet voice! He just gets better and better and I can't wait for more of his beautiful, poetic songs. Long live Leonard. People like you make this world a happier, more humaine place to be.
Saw Leonard in Oakland last April. Best concert of my life. This poem, Anthem, and I'm Your Man were stand-outs but there was really nothing that didn't work, and he played for like 3 and a half hours.
Such a moving poem, one wishes he'd just do a show of these pieces they really are amazing. I went to O2 in July 08 and Brooklands this summer, these performances were certainly the best things I'd seen live.
How can poetry be so perverse and so innocent at the same time? It's amazing how it touches my heart! It doesn't speak to me, it speaks for me. I feel the poetry as if it were my own words telling the story of my own life.
@eilirudy... if I could thumbs up your comment a thousand times I would, that's exactly how I feel about so many of his poems/songs... the man is THE Great Canadian Poet!
Leonard is amazing, his song 'wow'. You can hear the crowd change with his performance of it. A man with this much passion would live forever in the one he loved. 'You live your life as if it´s real. A thousand kisses deep.'
I saw Leonard perform this last night - the audience of almost 7000 reduced to total silence and appreciation of a beauty and creativity rarely experienced.
sorry, i filmed this on my little mini camera, built for pics not sound. he's releasing a dvd though, so hopefully it'll be on there. thanks for the comment tho
An amazing performance, I saw him at the O2 in November as well (is this the 14th?) and it was so moving, gave me goosebumps; thanks so much for sharing.
I saw him recite this three weeks ago, I can't describe the experence, I'm an athiest, I hate all religions, but if there is such a thing as a spititual experience this was it.
When I first heard this on the cd Live in London it moved me to tears. Like no other artist, Leonard Cohen elicits a strong emotional response in me. It sometimes feels like he has my heart in his hand. I adore the man's work.
@Hazel3336 ,,,,wow,,just read ur comment,,loved ur phrase--"it sometimes feels like he has my heart in his hand",,,thats a beautiful description of a moment in time,,saw the great man recently in Sligo,,can only describe the experience as spiritual,,he has a real PRESENCE,,takes his audience way off to a different level..pure magic
I envy you seeing him live. I recently bought the new Cohen release of him live at the Isle of Wight 1970. It's a DVD and cd set. Great the way he tamed the crowd, who were slightly fractious before he came on.
My favorite part of this performance is the audience's reaction. They laugh at first, applaud, make noise, but by the end everyone is just absolutely dead silent. It's astonishing.
