  • needs to be reloaded, its a mess

  • from 0:36 to 0:57 is typical of late Shostakovich. He was drawn to Jewish music and it is clearly evident in this galloping dance-melody. Impressively intense and full of vivacity! Awesome performance by Chang. Awesome concerto by Shostakovich!

  • 3:45 epic arpeggios!!!

  • that subtle slide she did at 2:10... amazing.

  • I'm pretty sure she has 7 fingers! Her passion for playing is fearless and without bounds. Love listening, and watching her perform.

  • @dietcokekiller Are you sure? I see 10....lol

  • I don't know if this is the best version, but I don't need any better. This was, for me, complete. I am not tempted to check out the "competition". Kamsahamnida !

  • I love how she gets absolutely possessed by the music she plays. She's a true musician.

  • Woah, just realizing how similar this concerto is to Shostakovich's violin concerto! Both so beautiful and haunting!

  • Like Fav

Watched the live performance at YSTCM on Feb 10, 2011.

    Of course not Han-Na Chang.

  • endiablé

  • i think that's the best version of this concert after rostropovich original one .

    soloist and archestra are flawless

  • (no words to describe)

  • 20 dislikes? She studied under Rostropovich and even made her first recording with him as the conductor. I'm sure he would approve this video

  • Han-Na Chang nous fait vivre le concerto de l'intérieur. Extraordinaire sensation ! On lit sur son visage toute la violence de la partition. Impression durable ! Bravo à elle. On aime Shostakovich en la regardant.

  • I love how her hair is all over the place by the very end. That is one hell of a workout.

  • god damn

  • she turned a masterpiece into a communist mockery

  • @atirisdes

Great insight... except she's South Korean.

  • @atirisdes Well, gotta keep in touch with how Shostakovich wrote it in the USSR right? When parts of this piece simulate Stalin's secret police, playing it on the communist side may not be a bad thing.

  • Bravo!

  • Coool...Shostakovich is a kind of death metal in classical music :D !

  • @monpuomonpuomonpuo Fuck you

  • holy hell

  • the orchestra is way too rigid in its play compared to her. It just sounds she deserves better

  • i bet she got that bow replaced after the concerto.

  • this is a battle can you hear it???!!!...and shes winning..or whoever is fighting...running..power...amzingggg..fantastic..absorbing.,. hannah chang..YOUR A MONSTER!,,1:37 my god and 1:45,,,, holy shit mannn...shes not playing an instrument shes telling a story,.

  • I love 3:45 to 3:54!!!!

  • Out of Limit.

    ONE and ONLY.

    The BEST.

  • Someone said yo you ma- humanity at his best, but Hanna, she is insane.

    I absolutely agree to it.

  • Wassman obviously is a kid who wants the attention in youtube by commenting negatives. the kid probably heard the name Rostropovich, but never heard him playing. 99.99% of people in the world want to smack your ugly face, even if you are in a jounior high school. person like you will probably never bring a joy to people around you and the society.

  • @pzm9pzm9 YES, EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED TO SAY. GLAD WE SHARE SAME THOUGHTS.

  • sweaty much.

aha but shes really good <33

  • Rostropovich is WAY better.

  • @Wassman / you dont know a shit about her music. Dont think you know something about Shostacovich and judge the greatest musician in the world with your shallow knowledge about cello ^^

  • @flackijng123 I'm sorry, but you aren't seriously describing Han-Na Chang as the greatest musician in the world are you?

And I think I know a bit more about the cello than you...

  • VIRTUOSA!!!! =o

  • Is it just me, or are those strings ridiculously close to the fingerboard? It just seems like there's near no effort in placing notes down o.O

  • @therandomcellist

doesn't really matter, as you really don't want to be cutting into your fingers when playing the cello, well as long as the strings are at least off of the board ;)

  • holy crap.... 3:46... playing it like it's nothing....

  • i love this part so. The chello is going on rampage XDXD

  • why is there never sheet music for the solo chelo/ trumpet/ violin/ watever. is it because there playing so fast/constantly they dont have time to change pages. also does the conductors score have the solos music on it?

  • It's because soloists usually play their music so much and are so in tune with it that they memorized the piece. It's kind of like memorizing lyrics to your favorite song on the radio. It's pretty simple once you play the piece a lot. And yes, the conductor's score has the solo part so that he can keep the orchestra together with the soloist.

  • yea shes have to change pages constantly

  • I used to be such a bigot.. I thought you need to be Russian to play Shostakovich..

This is amazing, I love her Shostakovich, she really has a great understanding and fantastic skills for this music, wonderful

  • lol at first i thought u had to be german to play shostakovich. then i realized he was russian :P

  • does any body have a live concert of shostakovich violin concerto no. 1 by sarah chang?

  • Han-na Chang remains one of my favourite cellists. And I REALLY LOVE SHOSTAKOVICH!!!!!!!!!!! This is the best interpretation of this piece, even better than the dedicatee, Rostropovich. He's still a real good cellist (and dead. *WAILS MOURNFULLY*) I really miss him.

  • Considerable heat here by Ms. Chang. Yes

  • ...why don't they point the camera at her when she plays, not the orchestra...

would have loved to see 1:09 to 1.20

  • you're right!!

  • Gotta say that despite a few errors in the 3rd movement she really nailed the 4th. That was impressive.

  • from 0:36 to 0:56 gives me the chills.

  • The best interpretation I've heard!

  • lmaoo!

  • Great player!

  • 이 여성은 세계 최고의 첼리스트이다.

  • i like this. she acts like she really wants to play this, not just for the performance, but she actually is into it and likes this song

  • @furubaqueen101

    *piece.

  • that note at 1:50 is incredible! makes the whole performance :)

  • 이 재 우 =)

  • tweeker

  • Wow, the piece is so long, but she maintained her focus and intensity at optimum level throughout the entire thing!

  • south korean 100% sure.

  • She is... amazing.

  • Bravo!

  • This is my favorite of movement of the shostakovich cello concerto. It seems so fun to play I wish I played cello as well as her haha

  • seems fun to play?? you have no idea, kid.

  • that was tight...

  • Great! Insane performance!

  • Whewe is she from?

    what is her nationality?

    somebody know?

  • She is from South Korea!

  • i'm pretty sure taiwan886 meant ridiculous in a good way if im not mistaken.

  • Great performance, great energy, overall and awesome live performance of an extremely tricky concerto that requires insane talent.

  • As they say, it's 90% practice and 10% talent =)

  • i think it's more that talent determines the amount a person can draw from practice. some people would probably need to practice more than 10000% more than others to improve as much

  • You have absolutely no way to prove this as there are no well known musicians who didn't start learning music at an early age and did not put in any hard work.

  • Who's the conductor?

  • tadaaki otaka

  • The recording is also good, but I like this performance too. Not very clean as recording, but I can feel more anguish.

  • She exercises through music A LOT.

  • you can lose up to 2lbs in 1 performance

  • This is my favorite movement of the cello concerto. Its pure power in the way the cello must play the notes. My friend and i always call this the random cello concerto, but it's not really that random.

  • I bet she fell asleep in the green room right when she sat down.

  • You know what I appreciate a lot about Chang?

She breaths. A LOT! She takes in a lot of air. This is something that a lot of players, even advanced ones, forget to do on a regular basis. It reinforces ensemble and rhythm (more so in a small setting) and regulates your heartrate and helps keep you engergized.

  • ya, i never get my breathing right too. haha. my teacher had to constantly remind me to breath breath and breath and i just forgot about it half way through my playing. especially when i do scalings. Maybe they should post a video on "how to breath naturally when playing".

  • breathe

  • I love how she jumps on here fast entrances. So exciting.

  • There is a product out there called "Hanna's alt". It's a very exclusive salt for the wealthiest. The salt is extracted with careful and au courant technology from Han-na Chang's sweet salty sweat. Rumours say it that they collect every drop of her sweat after a concert or practice session with a special knife-like implement. It is pushed against her voluptuous naked body and drawn on it. The preacious sweat is the gathered and treated to make the salt of salts.

  • ew....

  • You are disgusting like the taste of moth.

  • like the taste of moth? Do you eat moths or something?

  • ...

  • dude, that's just weird

  • It just came to my mind and had to let it go. Now that I read it, it seems a little bizarre. Though it's erotic at the same time. And would be a great business success in today's world, for sure.

  • As weird as it is, you're probably right. I'm just glad I don't sweat like that when I perform. Of course, I don't play the cello (violinist) and I have yet to play a full concerto with orchestra, let alone at such a high profile venue. So I can't really know how much I would sweat either... Man that's just weird too.

  • Perhaps the recording isn´t good but can it be true that the orchester (particularly the wind instruments and the bass drum)isn´t equal to han-na chang at all??? It sounds terrible!!:-(

  • She's really the epitome of cello playing.

Pardon my english... (But you get my meaning.)

  • I'm addicted to this piece

  • We have Rostropovich incarnate

  • I love this movement, it's so evil.

Pure Fucking Darkness. Black metal got nothing on this.

  • I love her playing style! If you like this you should really buy her album for this piece and Shostakovich's 1st Cello Sonata-excellent!

  • and its good that shes using her whole range cuz u can hear everything

  • see her dynamics!!!!

  • I love her facial expressions! She really gets into the music. I love performers when they do that. She's so good, i wish I could make my cello sing like that. Hey if you wanta crazy cello video type "apocalyptica contest" into the search area. it's a badass cello-rock band.

  • Facial expressions mean nothing. I listen to almost every classical music, whether it be from a CD or on a live concert, with closed eyes. Then you can hear the music. And this is where Han-na really has an upper hand. She is just terrific and enthralling.

  • It may be nothing when it comes to the music, but it adds something extra for me. It gives me a little insight into how the music affects the performer. To me, that's crucial.

  • Yep, but they can fake it easily.

  • I disagree. You can fake it all you want, but when it's real, it's undeniable. It's passionate. If an artist is trying to fake an impassioned facial expression, they're music wil reflect it, and there will be a "wrong" feeling from all of it. but if it's genuine, you can tell, like with this.

  • Ok, you are right :)

  • she looks like she just got out of the shower... of which I think I need a cold shower after this..

  • always after a phisical work.and figurate yourself the conductor..

  • omg shes sweating like crazy!

  • Imagine if she, Julian Lloyd Weber, and

Yo-Yo Ma did a trio. like popper's requiem! i think the universe would just collapse.....it wouldnt be able handle all of it...

  • The orchestra is so uninspiring. I would find it hard to perform with it.

  • i think their part is pretty easy for there level

  • It doesn't have to do with the difficulty. Most of them are just sitting back playing notes. Check out Han-Na's recording with the LSO to hear some true power! (:

  • ok i guess

  • I've never seen a wolfnote mute sit on a c string before =)

  • I had one on my last instrument...

  • It dampens the natural resonances of the cello less when on the C string.

  • the midget flute sticks out at times

  • INCREIBLE¡¡¡¡

  • Ella toca Shostakovich como si nada, Es una Semidiosa!!

  • aweeeesome!!

  • This movement is one she does right! Kudos.

  • 그것을 사랑하십시요

  • LOL... did you put "love it" through Babelfish? Because what your post actually says is "Please love that," as in a polite command.

  • hahah yessss

i dont have a korean keyboard so i have to do like everything from babel and i hate itttt

  • han-na chang rocks! this movement is so much fun to listen to

  • too al the dudes, that comment that someone is better or not, pls play that thing better than the soloist with a live orchestra, before saying that someone is better, this is a hardcore concerto so shhhhisss

  • i also would like to know where the videos are on the site

  • actually, her peformance here is quite mediocre compared to Yo-Yo Ma, Schiff and the whole bunch of other younger players.

  • Hahaha. Younger players like who?

  • just listen to any of the finalists at the Emanuel Feuermann competition in Berlin.

check them out at kronbergacademy site

  • I can't seem to find the videos on the site. Can you send a link?

  • We're here to enjoy the music, not compare performers. Why did you listen all the way to the end if you consider it mediocre?

  • BADASS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • SO HOT!!

  • Shostakovich is the best

  • she is crazy good!!!

  • chills
