debsrockine-nice structure, one question though, is the door only access to the air? Is there some sort of air ventilation system/element installed? or maybe i missed something?
The keep it a foot above ground level for minor flooding issues. I would have rather it been level with the yard too, but alas, not so, but I understand why. Yes we can park our truck on top if we wanted to.
i am going to get one. my father however is a machinist in rochester, ny and run the largest machine in NYS making steel and metal parts for NASA, the US Military (all sections) and other disclosed businesses and organizations. he's going to make one for us should there be need to use it. i should start him in business doing this. fallout shelters are good for not only nuclear and bomb fallout's but complete collapse of society.
and its still fifty yards away from the house . i never could figure out why they would put the damn celler so far away. nothing like running to the thing with a phone book on your head so the hail doesnt kill you.
The door is not weak at all. I don't know the gauge of the steel, but its extremely heavy and very hard to open. The hydrolic jack would make opening it much easier and quicker. The way it is right now I really have to struggle to get it open, but I can - and when a storm is here I need to be able to get inside quickly.
Or if not floating, water seeping through the concrete and flooding the thing? When I lived in Colorado and we had a basement that happened once and there was like 3 inches of water all over our basement, alas, now I live in Texas and houses there arent built with basements, so buying a storm shelter is essential...or you can take your chances in the bathtub.
June will be year two with the shelter in the ground. We have had a wet spring and fall, so far we have not had any problems with it floating or collecting water. It did come with a twenty year warranty and ran close to $2500.
Cool, but 2 things. #1How much did it cost you to do it? #2 You should consider rigging it with a hydrolic jack of some sort...this way if a tree or a car is placed over the hatch, you will be able to escape and it won't be your tomb.. (Don't forget your guns) People will be your biggest problem after you survive the intitial threat.
Yes it does! I thought I had a few snaps of that part of the installation, but maybe not. Its a great shelter with lots of room, we could probably get 20 people in there if we needed to. We have needed it once since the install and the peace of mind is priceless!
If i lived in the mid USA i would need 20ft of earth on top of my shelter to make me feel safe. Whats this shelter proof agaist could it withstand an EF4 ?
Why, that's just an old crapper tank.

What state are you all in? I may be moving to Missouri to live and work with friends under 1 condition. They get a shelter. Thanks!

Just currious about the waterproofing of the structure since it is partially below grade.
How is ventilation provided?

Would save time and money - to put it on top of the ground
I assume weight is the protection - unless planning law prevents it

I agree with the hydrolic jack and we are looking into having it done.

The door is extremely heavy and not weak at all. It needs the jack to make it easier to get open and closed.

With concrete underground shelters do you need to worry about floating? I know with the steel and fiberglass ones its often a problem.

Way to let the whole world know you have shelter...that way they can come begging for you to squeeze them in!

$3,000.
1. hire a couple of guys w/ shovels to dig a hole. $10/hour. $400.
2. Buy plywood and 2x4's and build a form. $700 (included $200 labor to build form)
3. Call up your local concrete truck and have them fill the forms. $1,500 per truck (9 cubic yards). Concrete finshiner: $200 for the day.
