DUDE!!! I saw this video once and been searching for it everywhere!! Glad I found it! Awesome info dude! Quick question how would a RES get along with a Razor back musk?
i got a large water dragon enclosure with an aquarium bottom, id like to put a small turtle like a razorback musk in there do you think they would hurt eachother ?!?
@potsmokeandashes I have a RES with 2 water dragons. I have a custom enclosure with a 40 gallon tank so that the turtle and dragons both have plenty of room. The turtle will bite your water dragons if your tank is not big enough, though. Before I built my custom enclosure, my turtle bit off a nice sized chunk of the dragon's tail.
i got a red eared slider from my moms one freind and they had him in a 10 gallon tank that i have him in now they never had any light for him for the 5 years they had him and now i just have a two 60 watt lamps pointed over his basking rock wich he didnt even have a basking rock before and hes still living he was also left in a basement in winter not fed and no water was added so it all evaporated for 3 months... magic turtle?
hey man i have a question hope ucan help me out, i have 2 red eared sliders, but here we are near winters end, so i my turtles are brumating(or so i read thats what they do in winter) the thing is, one of my turtles is wide awake, only sleep in nights, but never eats... and the other one rarely wakes up and when he/she do, only open one eye... they haven't eated since early december... not because i dont feed em, but because they just dont eat... im a bit worried, is this normal for em?
if anyone knows anything about different species of turtles, it would be nice if anyone could tell me what race my turtle is, there is a video up on my channel
@CARl0s831 it might eat the fishes lol and you would need a big ass tank! a SINGLE adult goldfish needs 20 gal to be happy.... and the turtle needs even more space plus a little bit of land so it can rest, if you can provide that, give it a try :D
Quick question: I have never had a turtle before and in a lot of the videos I've seen people hold their turtles like that. I was wondering if turtles bite? Or can I hold him in the palm of my hand?
@TeguBuzz Thanks for the answer. What UV percentage should the lamp have? I've seen bulbs on the internet with different values such as 5, 10, 20 and 30.
Hi. I got a Pseudemys concinna hieroglyphica for my birthday yesterday. I am a bit worried about its need for UV light. I'm leaving the small aquarium near the window for now, so the turtle can receive some sunlight. Do you have any recommendations for this specific subspecies (Pseudemys concinna hieroglyphica)? Thanks in advance.
Would this work? My uncle has an old tank thingy for his snake which like ran away or something, idk. But yeah i believe the tanks he doesn't use is the reallyyyy big one. i think, unles he put the other snake in the big one and doesn't use the smaller one, but it's still big. and they have screen covers.. We can't really afford getting a tank in general, and all we have is a an old fishtank that's 20 gallons and is well.. a fishtank o.o
cracks me up how many ppl come to me and say..excuse me sir i have a little bowl and i was wanting to keep a turtle in it........no filter...no lights...no nuthin..just a bowl....i say..poor turtles
I have a red slider pair at my home.. From Some day's before my male turtle opens his mouth and shrinks. I made a video of this type of reacting my turtle.. Let me know if you have any idea on it.. I think he is sick?
Thank u so much for this video. My daughter just had to buy an itty bitty turtle, while we were vacationing in Florida last summer. The souvenir store really had no useful info for us, & they didn't seem very educated in their care & upkeep. Long story short, videos like this have been a lifesaver. We live in Indiana, & aquatic turtles aren't sold in pet stores, due to them being salmonella carriers. Our turtle is a great pet, we love her dearly- I believe she is a yellow belly slider.
I have a female red ear slider, she is 3 years old and is living in a 75 gallon tank! Is that ok for her? I am going to customize the tank one day say it will have a large basking area on top! I didn't have much time to get a bigger tank because she was given to me off guard by my sister, and i didn't know if she was going to be a male or a female because she was so tiny! How much would a bigger tank for her be? I got her 75 gallon from a friend for 50$
if anyone was wondering, uv rays contain vitamin D which is the vitamin in milk that helps bone growth, so thats how that works. just letting you know
@chivaskyogre they're free if you go catch them, i have 2 that i saved from the brink of dying of thirst in a dry creek bed and the highway during the drought last summer here in texas. and a 3rd free from craigslist (he was being beat up by a female who was rejecting his advances lol) look around, you can find good deals out there, try craigslist . com.
@earthling1984 My red eared slider, Freddie II, who is now in a "Florida turtle" shelter in France and I had him for 14 years until he got too huge and destructive, used to look me right in the eyes. Many cultures consider turtles very wise. They are not often all that smart, but anyone who appreciates the beauty of a turtle or tortoise is okay by me. There is a tortoise living in Paris in a convent! Must be one of the last ones left! Eats weeds!
@earthling1984 You mentioned basking turtles vs non-basking ones. I remember my snappers never basked at all. Only one of them actually climbed up to bask as a hatching, but afterwards, never did it again.
My French spouse got annoyed with my pet turtle, his light, his needs, but I had him for about 14 years and gave a donation to give him to a refuge here in France. Red eared sliders are no longer legal here, people threw them in canals and stuff. Freddie was a great pet and I hope he has survived. I know I put him in the best place possible. Responsible pet owning is key. I swear that turtle knew me and he told me a lot, which sounds nutty! :)
I just adore turtles, have all my life, but most people are not up to keeping them. I am American but live in France. You have to plan, they can get huge, they need daily care, they can live to 40 years! They can eat a lot, too.
Your right it is annoying and time consuming to empty a turtle tank and it isn't healthy for a turtle to be in constant water changes like that...
The best filters are FLUVAL, They have a U range which is very good for a turtle tank because you can change the flow of the pump... there is a U1,U2,U3 and a U4...

@mentalbren If i were you, i would take pictures of the turtles and go to google and search "turtle forum" and post the pictures in a couple of forums and people would tell what kind they are.
hey, thanks this video helped heaps ! (: , but i was just wondering how much the whole set up will cost ? i have saved up around $400 - $500 dollars ? (:
@xForeverABelieber well the tank can cost up to $200(if purchased new)... then filter($75 probably about), then lighting($50), then decorations for tank and turtle.
@dee31523 Wow no wonder why your turtle is "sad" every turtle needs a UV light! Specially if he is a semi-aquatic turtle. You need to get him one asap or he will die :( what type of turtle do you have?
@emtooth6rocks Well you should have watched this video because it does have a lot of helpful tips on how to take care of a turtle! Anyways in the tank question you asked you have to use 10 gallons of water per inch on the carapace of your turtle. For example, if your turtle is 5 inches long then you need a 50 gallon tank :)
Hello, I've recently become interested in turtles, if I get a turtle, (it will be my first time) it will be like a upgrade for my hermit crab. Your videos are very helpful and I learned a lot! Do you have any suggestions on what type of turtle. I didn't watch this video, so sorry if you said this stuff in it. Also, how big do you think the tank should be if I get one or two medium sized turtles?
Awwwwe look at the little guy so active and pushing his brothers around haha...Anyways I'm thinking on getting a turtle and I don't want a big turtle I want a relatively small one like 4 or 5 inches. I really liked the one called eastern something and I was wondering how many times a day did that little guy eats and what does he eat? Thank you for this great video, thought me a lot! :)
@syderena if you get a male eastern painted they stay fairly small. they eat turtle food/pellets which you can get at any pet shop, and you can also feed insects. I feed my turtles once a day.
ok..hi well i am 11 and wanted a turtle since i was like 5 and thank u so much for the advice, but i have one question since its my first time what inexpensive turtle should i first get and if so do u think u can make a video on it cuz i dont know what turtle to first get:) and my mom dosent want a realy big tank:0
@killakevProductions musk is a great starter turtle. they are inexpensive and easy to care for. male musks stay fairly small, u will need a 40gallon tank at least(no smaller) for a single male musk.
wow man this is really detailed THANK YOU! i got given these turtles for xmas from my brother who couldnt look after em and i have no idea wat to do with them :( hopefully i can ask you any questions i may have, will that be okay? thank you for the video
Hey i have a question on how to clean a turtle tank, for a 40 gallon tank, do you siphon 25% of the water if it is filled all the way? I have a soft shelled turtle that's why there so much water.
Hey Help!!! READ This quick i have a RES now and he is or she is not eating i tried pellet and letuce go to my channel and see the video cald help my turtle i really need help.. sorry for my ugly tank when u see it
Can a baby southern painted turtle go together with a pink belly sideneck turtle?
I have a baby southern painted turtle which is 1 inch in shell length and i was wondering can a pink belly sideneck turtle (which is the same size... 1 inch in shell length) go together with the southern painted turtle??
It's not a great idea to mix species together like that. They can pick up pathogens that they may not naturally have immunity to. Other than that, good video.
Aww so cute! I went to petsmart yesterday and I was looking for turtles but they had none in stock.I've had 7 turtes my lfetime for now.i want to get another one C:
Hi, I saw your other video and your turtle tank is filled with rocks n stuff, it looks nice. I've kept my turtle tank kinda bare, I've been advised that it'll stay cleaner. What's your take on that? And what do you say about keeping live plants inside?
@sufrisuf a bare bottom is great to help it stay cleaner, but you can add larger size rocks like I have and that will be nice for them to climb on and grab onto and 'sit'. with nothing in the tank they have nothing to grab onto. Live plants I've tried. Don't do it, they will end up either eaten, or at least bitten at and all ripped out and moved around. Then they will die and just fill up your filter. Stick with no plants, or fake plants with turtles(Unless in a huge outdoor pond).
theres diferent red eard sliders like the juvinile turtle that grow as big as a dinner plate
or the baby turtle that get as big as a palm on your hand which is a good size red eard slider turtles from turtle shack and thay stay quite a good size
i will never buy the females thay get a bit more bigger than the palm on your hand
@earthling1984 I think my turtle is dieing. He isnt moving much and his head is leaning put againt the cage. I tried to feed him and he is not going toward the food at all. And when he was going for the food he wont eat it. I have only had him since september 2011. I do let him get sun light when its sunny out. Is this horriable i feel so bad and sad that he wont really move. His legs and arms are all spread out now
When I was little I just got a HUGE glass tank, put little water in it and a big rock in the middle. I got a baby turtle at a flea market so I put it in that. Well, let's just say he had A LOT OF ROOM for such a little guy lol!!!
@Tecolote41 What State do You Live In? I Want to see if my flee market sells them, but first before taking a trip, I want to see what state sells them.
@earthling1984 I have a question, my turtle is bearly moving and I have had him since september of 2011 and I dont have a uv ray light but i do let him get some sun light. He was moving just fine like a day ago and now he is looking really said. Is he dieing and if so is there any thing I can do to save his life.. His head is leaning up against the cage and he isnt really moving? I think he is a red slider

@emtooth6rocks watch the vid :) a musk turtle may be good for you.

syderena 1 month ago
@syderena if you get a male eastern painted they stay fairly small. they eat turtle food/pellets which you can get at any pet shop, and you can also feed insects. I feed my turtles once a day.

Thanks for reading!
killakevProductions 1 month ago
@killakevProductions musk is a great starter turtle. they are inexpensive and easy to care for. male musks stay fairly small, u will need a 40gallon tank at least(no smaller) for a single male musk.

@fireflame40 best to not mix turtles with fish. Turtles eat turtle pellets and insects.

Hey i have a question on how to clean a turtle tank, for a 40 gallon tank, do you siphon 25% of the water if it is filled all the way? I have a soft shelled turtle that's why there so much water.

It's not a great idea to mix species together like that. They can pick up pathogens that they may not naturally have immunity to. Other than that, good video.

Hi, I saw your other video and your turtle tank is filled with rocks n stuff, it looks nice. I've kept my turtle tank kinda bare, I've been advised that it'll stay cleaner. What's your take on that? And what do you say about keeping live plants inside?
sufrisuf 2 months ago
@sufrisuf a bare bottom is great to help it stay cleaner, but you can add larger size rocks like I have and that will be nice for them to climb on and grab onto and 'sit'. with nothing in the tank they have nothing to grab onto. Live plants I've tried. Don't do it, they will end up either eaten, or at least bitten at and all ripped out and moved around. Then they will die and just fill up your filter. Stick with no plants, or fake plants with turtles(Unless in a huge outdoor pond).

@earthling1984
theres diferent red eard sliders like the juvinile turtle that grow as big as a dinner plate
or the baby turtle that get as big as a palm on your hand which is a good size red eard slider turtles from turtle shack and thay stay quite a good size
i will never buy the females thay get a bit more bigger than the palm on your hand

His legs and arms are all spread out now
dee31523 1 month ago
@sufrisuf I would have to agree bare bottom keeps it cleaner but if your filter is good enough..i dont see the problem with rocks.

When I was little I just got a HUGE glass tank, put little water in it and a big rock in the middle. I got a baby turtle at a flea market so I put it in that. Well, let's just say he had A LOT OF ROOM for such a little guy lol!!!

He was moving just fine like a day ago and now he is looking really said. Is he dieing and if so is there any thing I can do to save his life..
