  • @actonbath i bet your a mexican?

  • Good stuff, I live in AZ also, finding water is the biggest fear with living in the southwest. Any other tips on finding water would be great.

  • I have been doing bushcraft in the az desert for some time now and i must say i cannot find a good knife for the area. i love my mora and enzo trapper, but i really dont need to do that much carving down here, yet i dont really need a big chopper either. what midsized knife would you recommend for that job? ps i have actually done out several times without a knife and only a large chunk of obsidian for chipping off blades. so maybe blade selection is not as important here as it is in the woods

  • @GUITARISTKRC Thats a good point. I have done the same with the obsidian as well as jasper, agate, chert, and others. I am in an area that has a lot of different terrain and vegetation. I have found I can go with out a knife but when it is wet or wet and cold I do need one to make things a little easier. That is about the only time in my opinion. Thanks for watching and for the comment.

  • great vid. keep it up

  • what boots do you recommend for the Desert?

  • Great vid on desert survival! Howdy from El Paso TX.

  • Great video on desert survival! Howdy from El Paso TX.

  • How much was the gore-tex jacket?

  • Would like to see tutorial on your methods of snare and trap building. I'm Eastern woodland...I use either fishing or bird traps. Would love to see you protein gathering methods!

  • enjoyed

  • Nicely done! Loved the tips!

  • Enjoyed viideo. Spent time training in deserts of Utah and you are right it's a different animal compared to the wilderness and swamps coping methods. You perform as you train. Rangers lead the way!

  • your talking about keeping it light..two compasses two knives, you only need one of each. 200ft of paracord is about 150feet more than you need..

  • Another great video. And to you eastern skeptics, You never know where you will be when a survival situation arises, or where you may have to move to have a job or keep a job.

  • lol, why go to the desert when you can go to the forest

  • uh, because we live here. . . ? LOL, I get you though!!

  • another great video.

It's a tough decision sometimes on how much stuff to pack vs weight of everything.

  • Another great video John, most people just don't understand the desert as we do. Keep up the good work. For a guy in the high desert in far west Texas,

  • Just loving your videos John. Some time back I told you I live in NM and would love at some point pop over and take a course with you, I can't remember if I asked you or not but do you know the edible and medicinal plants of NM? Would love to learn more. I know them for CO and back east but there are a lot of different plants here in NM, especially in the desert areas. Great job you are doing John, so appreciate it. Robin

  • Sounds like this would work for the California Chaparral too.

Man it is dry in the Ojai Valley.

  • Hey I live pretty near there! I'm from Newbury Park.

  • I was wondering if you could do a Pan View of the area you are in. It would be nice to see where you are in the vids. I really like to see terrain as well as plants and things.

  • This one was taken just outside of my town, I had to get back to the family for thanksgiving. In my next videos I will definitely try to get some good shots of the area. It is beautiful out here.

  • Thanks, I really like to see the terrain out there. My visit to the New Mexico and Arizona deserts were awesome. That is a great area.

  • John,

This is truly one of the most evoled kits I've ever seen, It's obvious you put years of experience into each of these parts.

    Thanks for posting.

    5/5

  • john you should make a vid talking about the 22 for a good survival rifle and my grampa said that you shoot a pig inbetween the eyes it drops them instantly

  • These were both great videos- full of useful info. Your comments on water sources in the SW is very helpful. The note about mining run-off can, unfortunately, apply to a lot of regions. Please keep up the fine work. 5/5

  • Do you have a link for the gortex jacket.

What knife have you got strapped ?

  • RAT 7, you can get a gortex just about any sportsmans store or mil surp store for a decent price.

  • Good stuff! I like the advice keep your kit light and learn your skills.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  • i see a lot of comments about the 22 as a survival rifle unless your only going after small game i would leave it. a friend of mine was doing some nuisance animal control on his land a few guys had 22 rifles for whatever reason i dont know. they were putting 10-20 shots in wild hogs and kept going finally i dropped it with my 308 and we told them to put the 22s away , no where near a clean kill. at least carry .223 or .243.

  • well you shouldnt shoot a hog with a 22 its not humane making the animal suffer like that. Im not sayin that a 22 should be used to hunt big game i have other rifles to take big game

  • these were small hogs 100lbs and under. 22s are great for small game but that is about it unless your a very good shoot and snap spinal cord.

  • yea i would use my 30-30 or 7mag to shoot them

  • i could see the reason behind taking the 22 to save on weight but you get to a point where you lost the reason to take a firearm. if you were really pressed to only have one gun to take with you it would have to be a shotgun many different loads you can bring to take any size game.

  • as long as your a good shot a 22 will do the job with no suffering. i know because i have seen it done.

  • For a survival rifle I would carry a .22. Like you guys were saying it is more for small game. Hence using it for a survival rifle. I wouldn't be trying to go after large game in a survival situation anyway. Uses too many calories versus calorie intake. I do remember shooting a hog with a .22 back home (small hog about 70 lbs). The bullet bounced around a lot inside hitting some of the vital organs. Bad way to go though. I agree spinal cord shots are better.

  • If you create a cone with the shiny side of the survival blanket and put your food in a plastic bag you can make a solar oven.

  • Very, very interesting video. When I go Hikying, my natural enviroment is different (I live in Italy) but this video (and part one too) is filled of good ideas.

See my videos if you want.

  • Great information

  • man im goin hunting tommorow for dove sand ima sight in my rifle.John i have a savage bolt action 22lr. Do you think it is a good survival rifle

  • The .22 is a great survival rifle. The only thing I would say would be better is a 22 410 over and under. But the 22 is still a good survival rifle.

  • i was looking into those but i need a pistol so im saving up for a 357. magnum.i get what i can afford im only 13 lol

  • You are an Navy SEAL and you are only 13? Lol jk, but I would say that a 22 would be sufficient for just about anything you might need in the southwest (people have killed elk and stuff like that with just a 22 rimfire).

  • I don't get the first part of your comment, could you elaborate it a little bit?

  • Oh lol the kid's profile name was NavySeal something or other. I was just making a joke.

  • Oh, . . . LOL I must have missed that one. I bet his Dad or Brother or something was probably a navy S.E.A.L. still I get ya now!!

  • great idea about eye protection its under rated i think ur my first sub to list them i my self wear glasses (bad vision i need them}and just the normal day there is dirt and grime on them ur eyes do alota work and blah sun blind walking or driving tint that shit ★★★★★

  • 5/5m8
