  • could only watch one sherlock..pointless show..

    i prefer the period sherlock.

  • Ohhh ffs. She brought down Spooks, now Sherlock? YOU GOT NOTHING ON CUMBERBATCH, sod off!!! Her agent is too good for his/her own good!!

  • Why do people get so worked up at a bit of flesh? It entirely missed the point of why she did it, preventing Sherlock his data to make his inferences and unsettling him. If that isn't narratively justified I do not know what is.

  • moffat is a cretin

  • Love? May I present to you the canon:

"It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind."

You don't have to be a consulting detective to deduce that. Artistic licence is brilliant, but for the love of God, when something is made THAT CLEAR you can't completely rewrite it. Might as well make Sherlock love Moriarty, would make as much canonical sense :/

  • @PigeonPieProductions YES! MY OTP!

(On a less trolly note, both Moffat and Cumberbatch have gone on record claiming they believe their Holmes is asexual, so I wouldn't peg her as his love interest just yet. Someone else's, maybe. Hopefully not him. *insert madness mantra here*)

  • @tensachan (Let's just say it's not not my OTP >¬>)

Moffat said something similar on BBC Breakfast. He called it an "unlove story" (you brilliant man Moffat), and indicated it was more a fascination than romantic feelings. Which begs the question, what the hell is Pulver on about? Perhaps it'll be unrequited love for Miss Adler... Although people have told me she's a lesbian dominatrix, so... DAMMIT, NOTHING HERE IS ELEMENTARY MY DEAR WATSON.

  • @PigeonPieProductions Would just like to point out that Sherlock/Adler is not my OTP. I tend to ship platonic Sherlock/Moriarty plotting. Their brains are amazing.

  • @PigeonPieProductions That's based on the assumption that Watson is a reliable narrator. The second sentence in the book has an interjected "I take it", which underlines that it's Watson's view of Holmes and not necessarily the truth.

  • @Solario392 The assumption that Watson is a reliable narrator forms the basis for quite a considerable amount of the canon. But your point is understandable.

To be honest I don't care now that I have seen what Moffat has done with it. Brilliant episode all round. The asexuality of Cumberbatch's Sherlock was very well developed, I thought.

  • @PigeonPieProductions Their relationship is an intelectual one. She is a lesbian, he's asexual, so their relationship is totally different to how we think of conventional male-female relationships. Sherlock and Irene have an entirely intelectual bond. It actually subverts our view of male-female relationships.

  • @Relugus Indeed. It was the perfect portrayal of how I see (and hopefully how ACD intended the reader to see) their relationship, and the addition of Adler as a lesbian just enhanced the communication of the oddity and unconventionality of their bond. Yet another example of the devotion to the canon and endless imagination the writers possess.

  • @Relugus well said!

  • MOFFAT! YOU PLAY WITH MY FEELINGS! You already made me love Eleven/River... >_< No nasty tricks this time

  • i thought i'd hate her part, but to find out that Sherlock will be confused about the sensation of love and will most likely be extremely adorable makes me forget to breathe just an ickle bit :)

  • they didnt end up putting Irene/Sherlock together.....steven moffat said so in an interview.

  • ...Aaand of course. Love interest. Goddammit, why. Just, why. *sighs* Maybe it won't be THAT bad...

  • I'm glad they are playing her as a love interest because although Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did write Irene Adler as a very minor part in the story, she was only in it for one part, I am completely in love with the character I think it's exactly what every brilliant quirky intelligent character needs: a sexy naughty love interest who gets the better of them. I love Doyle but he seriously underused the character of Irene and I'd love to say Guy Ritchie overused her in the film but I loved that also!

  • @WaterBottle1998 I agree! I mean, if they really are planning to bring Sherlock into the "modern world," they would do best to humanize him even more. As much as people, or even Sherlock himself would like to think, he is not a machine and impermeable to emotions such as love, or attraction at least. I for one loved what they did with Irene in the Guy Ritchie movies. Sherlock needs a strong female opponent who can match him step for step.

  • @SnowGirl098 Precisely! Plus I think it will be brilliant to see how Sherlock copes with this new feelings which he has so badly tried to delete from his brain, I think this is exactly what he needs because in series one he was so brilliantly cocky and arrogant because he was top and felt superior to the police but by bringing in Irene Adler then we see how shaken he is that someone (especially a woman) knows all his tricks and can beat them and is not amazed by his ability!

  • @WaterBottle1998 Yeah, I don't think the Irene thing is going to make it worse - in fact I think it will make the show even better because it will give us a chance to see a more human and vulnerable side of Sherlock. If he's not shown struggling more with his emotions and being in conflict with himself, then there's no character development at all.

  • @DuchessAliana Exactly, because we have never really seen Sherlock vulnerable or worried that he might get something wrong or be disproved and I think that will give a new side to the character that everyone will love and will break their hearts, words of Moffat himself, he posted on twitter: 'the music in Scandal in Belgravia will just break your heart' or something along those lines :')

  • I'm disliking the love interest thing, too...Why can't a female character just BE THERE without being a love interest? Irene is supposed to be "The Woman", not "His Woman". :P

Hoping Moffat will play it well, though. I'm sure she'll be a great Irene.

  • I just hoped they wouldn't create love between Irene and Sherlock.. it just doesn't belong there.. But I'm still hoping it won't be anything serious

  • @Cleostra yeah. sherlock and watson are meant to be together.

  • Doyle would be shocked.

  • I av faith in Moffat/Gatiss cos of the dvd commentary on the scene where John asks the 'so you've not got a girlfriend then?' type questions. I think they get the whole 'everything else is transport' thing and that this whole 'love interest' issue surrounding Irene Adler has just been misinterpreted. However, u will never be able to stop some audience members seeing chemistry between people and pairing them up romantically in their heads...u only have to read fanfiction as evidence to that.

  • @chrislulu8 That is true, ship any couple you want - I don't care. But please keep asexual Sherlock canon! Asexuals are invisible in the media.

  • This is actually a good thing for those who are tired of seeing Sherlock x John fan videos.

  • @yougotmail42 If you don't like the videos - don't watch them!

Meanwhile, it's sucks that the writers is going to destroy asexual Sherlock. Asexuals needs representation and recognition too. And why can't a female character exists without being a love interest?

  • Watson says that Holmes always referred to Irene Adler as 'the woman'. And that when the King offers Holmes one of his valuable rings Holmes declines and asks the king if he may have her photograph. One may say that it is was Holmes way of honoring a skilled opponent or maybe she got under his gruff exterior a bit. Watson says Holmes never derided the intellectual capabilities of women after this affair.

  • i kind of HATE that Irene Adler has become a love interest. I ripped up my flashcards in rage after watching this. I might sob when the episode airs.

  • Idiots! Clearly Pulver and the writers haven't read the book!

  • Uuuuuuurgh I can't believe they have made her a love interest that is really rather annoying. What a shame, I though Moffat and Gatiss would try and stick to the original more. But she is beautiful and will hopefully do a good job with the rest of the part so we shall just have to wait and see what we get with this episode! It will probably be brilliant with or without a love interest!

  • ever one seems really upset about her being a sort of love intrest. and even though she was only in one story it doesn't meen she was a minor character. this was a women who could out whit sherlock holmes. he had so much admiration and respect for her and even said she was the most beautiful women he's ever seen. now that as far as sherlock is conserned is what love is. they say twisted love story but it's not going to be an intimate love story. more a sociopathic confusingly clever love story

  • @BluePaperSocks I think I'm with you on that one :) Let's all just wait and see.

  • @demelzabt thank God I'm not the only one who thinks that! And yes, Granada's Irene is definitely the one IMHO.

  • WUT? Have people read A Scandal in Bohemia! I mean Sherlock and Irene never met!

What I think the point of her was to prove to Sherlock that women weren’t stupid and also that being in love doesn’t make you stupid. And well, we all know Sherlock is asexual.

  • @Chubeidad Have YOU read A Scandal In Bohemia? Of course they met.

  • WHAT. THE. FUCK. ADLER IS NOT A LOVE INTEREST, DAMMIT. BEST BE TROLLING, MISS PULVER. BEST BE TROLLING.

  • Hmm In all her interviews Lara Pulver has said the same thing it's about 'Sherlock dealing with love'... so Sherlock might be in love =/ but I'm looking forward to seeing how Stephen Moffat has tackled this episode and put his own spin on it. I doubt they'd change the original stories that much. But I guess we will have to wait till January to find out.

I'm looking forward to seeing a strong female character as well and I think Lara Pulver will be a brilliant Irene Adler for Benedict's Sherlock.

  • There better be a TROLL in the Dungeon. If not, there will be some serious Moffat-Hating. Thought you outta know.

  • Of all the people to play Irene Adler, they picked Sookie's fairy godmother?

  • I also am not a fan of making Irene a love interest for Sherlock because, in the original story, Watson stresses that Holmes DOESN'T show any romantic interest in her, although we could say Watson's insight is limited in this case. But I'm also not a fan because Irene doesn't come off as a well-rounded character. She's meant to be, in a sense, the 'perfect woman', even though she was defying many social expectations for women in Victorian times. She often treads on Mary-Sue territory, to me.

  • I kind of dislike the fact that Irene Adler has become a love interest... I can't really comment because I haven't seen the episode yet and haven't seen how they are doing it, but in the stories she was a very minor character who gets the better of Sherlock and they didn't really spend much time together. That being said, Stephen Moffat is a genius and I trust him completely...I'm sure it'll be great either way

  • @FiveOrangePips I agree. I know that the episodes will be good regardless of whatever changes they make to the story, but I can't lie when i say that I'll feel sick through the whole thing because of this. She's supposed to be in interest of the intellectual level, not the romantic. But whatever. We can only hope for the best with that topic..... Let's just be glad that she SHOULD only last for one episode.

  • @FiveOrangePips It's all because Sherlock Holmes always refers to her as "the woman" and makes mention of the fact that she is very beautiful. I think it would have been funny if they'd kept her still being from New Jersey. ;)

  • Well, I hope she trolling :/

  • All I can hear is 'love interest'. I just don't approve I'm sorry. I hate Irene Adler even without having seen series two.

  • she´s well chosen, pretty woman
