Great stuff excellent concept. In a sense it's a car designed by geniuses to be driven by those that may have a lapse of judgement, a medical emergency and the occasional idiot.
@bmxjunkie400 True! At least you can't crash into random things cause you passed out for 10 seconds! I'm not supporting this kind of behavior just to be clear.....haha
About getting rear ended, I am sure they can have the Volvo flash the taillights before it starts braking. The car can already tell that it is closing the distance to fast so it will tell the driver behind the Volvo to slow down sooner. Just like in some of the cars were the "third lamp" would flash its bright LED's when someone braked. This would make sense for Volvo to do something like that.
this makes Volvo drivers even worse at driving than they already are...I wanna see a car with a wooden fist that comes out of the steering wheel in a crash instead of an airbag to knock some mother-fuckin sense into these jackasses!
Well, Joe24chevy, unless they develope system so the car can fly or get into a parallel dimension, if the car behind you is too close or not paying attention, it will hit the front car. They can´t solve every possible situation. This system is mainly focused on situations where the driver is distracted and doesn't apply the brake altough there's an object in the front.
The point is that the auto panic breaking is a safety feature that can possibly prevent, or diminish how bad a wreck is. That is good! Driving Volvos saved my life! That is the stupidest thing i've ever heard. Remember that the volvo would stop either way, crash into the car infront of it or just breaking to a complete stop. I would prefer the cool "automatic panic-break thingy" function instead of the version of crashing in to the car in front of me. I guess that the car behind the volvo will crash into it either way.
This is all good, but what about the person behind you. You may not crash into the car in front of you, but the person behind will smash right into the back end of your car.

and what if the road is slippery?? does car recognise this to??
georgerelax 1 year ago
@georgerelax
Yes, it kinda does. That's what the DSTC is calld. But inorder for the car to know that it's slipery. You have to brake first.
This avoidence system does not exist on this kinds of volvo. It's just released on the new 2011's Volvo S60,s80, V60. And S40.
Wich also is avalible as drivE cars. = -100Co/2 = ~ 0.38L/m. For some of them.

Can it avoid a collision that is around a corner? That is the big question. Is this just head on?
CeeStyleDj 3 years ago
Excersising a safe stopping distance between you & the car in front ; eliminates alot of imminent colisions.
