  • They are to soft to drunk drivers by the way. I think they just should permanently ban them from the driver seat. Cars and traffic is a very serious thing, some people really don't understand that a car can be very dangerous if you do not be careful. Alcohol and traffic should be 100% forbidden, and they just really have to let people who combine them not drive cars anymore. It's a nice song. Very nice even!

  • Great song, one of the best.

  • It is used as a tribute to a friend of the band, Barbara Williams, who was killed by a drunk driver on her way home from one of their shows. She was an organ donor and this is done in tribute to her. She donated her corneas, which is the reference to the angel opening and closing her eyes, kind of a "circle of life" thing.

  • cool thaks for the info i never knew that have always loved the song

  • Easily one of the best (and most haunting) songs in the last 20 years.

  • There is far too much dissing going on here. Listen to what my man "thethresh" has just said - believe it - listen quietly - and show some respect for something most of you (and me) could never achieve in our whole lifetimes!

  • @schmuckfeatures that comment would only make sense if you said it at least 10 years ago. this song sounds nothing like the corporate rock music playing right now (which right now its all emo pop punk. but its starting to go away now that were moving into the 2010's....).

  • RIP barbara lewis, didnt know you, but you must have been one great person, to have an awesome written in your honour.

  • These lyrics are constantly misunderstood! Yes, Ed is speaking to the circle of life, but specifically to how Barb's life gave new life to many. The angel, the baby down the hall, the pale blue eyes (of Barb), the pain ("confusion")... the lyrics are wholly Ed's interpretation of his experience and perception of Barb's impact.

  • This was written before Barbara Lewis was killed, the band only dedicates the song to her, it's not written ABOUT her.

  • The band dedicated this to Barbara Lewis, one of their high school friends who was killed by a drunk driver around the time this song was written. Her brother in-law Cory told us the story:

The song's lyrics are mostly an analogy. Barb donated several organs, including her heart. She was close with Ed and the guys and died in a car collision with a fleeing armed robber.

  • I have always found this song to be emotionally intense, maybe partly because of the video, even before I found out what the lyrics were about...

  • Awesome group, amazing song. If you've never heard of them, well now you have!

  • u never heard of live??? that makes u a musical moron..the fact that you admitted to it makes you a bone head! dont boast of your ignorance.

  • you need to grow up.....

  • You need to stop responding to yourself 5 times over! Schizo douche bag ass pirate.

  • Well, so far, I've read 100 comments and the poor friend, who loved enough to donate her corneas, has now had THREE surnames. Should we toss a coin to discover which is correct?

  • Wiki says..."The band dedicated the song to Barbara Lewis, a 19 year-old friend of the band who was killed in 1993 by a drunk driver..."...good enough for me

  • que cancion mas triste ( sad song) pero un icono de este grupo y si una de mas grandes canciones de todos los tiempos

  • Probably one of the greatest songs all times!

  • I agree entirely...but now I think of it I could probably come up with ten songs that are the greatest songs of all time...that's the trouble with superlatives....

  • Barbara Williams was a friend of the band and was on her way home when she was hit and killed my a robber fleeing from the police. She was an organ donor and Live uses this song to pay her respects. The opening and closing of the angel's eyes refer to the recipients of her corneas.

  • such a beautiful song...

  • I want to agree with you but the song itself is really sad..

  • Nothing like 90's rock.

  • yes, except for (imho) late 70's and 80's post-punk and alt.rock....hehe

  • it never had to happen abortion breathes new life open your eyes... don't judge this comment by first glance read it twice understand what i'm saying...

  • exellent band brilliant song !vry moving brings back some good and bad memories.boo hoo.lol.

  • This song is moving and sets the feeling of life within those who understands the meaning of this breath taking song

  • why does his eyes move weirdly lol , good song !

  • Strong!

  • mais de rien...

  • 1 or 2 good songs??? You smoke some more crack there buddy....

And did somebody say "horses pulling from the center of the earth?"

    That's hilarious.

  • lol its "forces " not "horses" LMAO!!!

  • the only great band to come out of the post-grunge movement.

  • wow get a life if you don't like the song don't listen to it and don't say crap about it

  • My comment wasnt directed at the song. Why would I go to a video with the sole purpose of insulting it?

My comment was directed at powerofktulu. Im sure you can read by yourself what he wrote.

  • Spiritual.

  • This is more about the cycle of life, dedicate to a friend of the band who was killed. She was an organ donor. The angel opening and closing her eyes has to do with the corneas that were given to recipients and an homage to the mother who gave her daughter's organs.

  • its forces pulling

  • this song is so sad because, (im superstitous) (spelling) and my girlfriend who i love very much is suppose to die. i dont want to believe it. but i feel i have to accept it. this song is so depressing. :(

  • Wow, I'm sorry. I hope for a miracle to happen for you and your girlfriend!

  • thank you very much!

  • i agree u????wanna die to be safe????

  • i listen to this song once or twice a day

  • life and death makes sense, but the reference to placenta is why everyone thinks that it's about two births and one living and the other dying. Then again, I feel life overrules in this song. Whether people lived or died--everyone is at peace in the end.

  • It's actually a reference to organ donation.

  • What? No it's not. It has nothing to do with organ donation.

The song is pretty simple. A contrast between a new life entering the world (baby born) and a life leaving (old woman dying). And there's also hints of the idea of reincarnation—the spirit/soul of the old woman re-born in the baby.

  • Incorrect, please check my previous post below regardiing Barbara Williams.

theeponym: Re-read my comment - I didn't say "about her".

  • it wasn't williams it was lewis

  • Wrong !!!!

  • Definitlio a very legendary song for me....I recall back about 1997 when it became a big hit Down Under....I was about to become a Mormon Convert and the boys coming around for a visit would play this song for me on my $300 guitar....It was but cool as....I didn't get converted but it was a fantastic experience nonetheless. This is an excellent song for me; if not the favourite,....

  • People have missed the point of this song. The band had a friend named Barbara Williams who was hit and killed by a drunk driver on the way home from a show. She was an organ donor and this song is done in tribute to her: she donated her eyes, making references to opening and closing her eyes, one life ending, another beginning.

  • The song is dedicated to her. But it's not *about* her.

  • I bellieve I said "dedicated" to Barbara, though Ed used the symbolism in the song for the organ donation message. Yes, this was written before Barbara was killed, it is also a way to show respect for Barbara's mother, the circle of life, etc. Don't put words in my mouth.

  • satinnights your a fag if you use girls like that

  • I remember getting a lap dance by a very good looking stripper to this song.

  • why this song?! why not something by perfect circle or something sexy?!

  • I never realized that Perfect Circle and lap dances go together,

  • He said he got a lap dance to this song, which ISN'T APC. You lost?

  • you're probably sick of this question but why this song?

  • Recommended to me by my Lady. I never even knew of this band and I think this is just an awesome song. Brilliant video too. I could live with more of this. :)

  • 2,350th person to coment and live rocks!!!

  • dedicated the song to Barbara Lewis, a 19 year-old friend of the band who was killed in 1993 by a drunk driver[1] who was fleeing from the police after a robbery in York, Pennsylvania. Barbara had many of her organs donated including a liver to a 10 month old baby, and the song lyrics reflect how her death enabled others to continue living

  • She also donated her corneas, referenced in the angel "opening" and "closing"her eyes.

  • Wikipedia is cool.

  • its much more than cool.

  • Glad I'm a donor :P

  • you guys didnt get my circle jerks pun,so to be blunt the cycle of life.birth /death.

5 to 1 1 to 5 no one here gets out alive.

  • my friend just died in a car crash a few years ago

this was the song played at her funeral

makes me sad everytime i hear it

  • great song

  • haha so many hateful comments

  • its about come around,go around.

    the circle,you jerks.

  • Comment removed

  • i thought it was about a mother dying while giving birth

    idk though

  • zcpierce you're exactly right.

"Her placenta falls to the floor"

"The confusion that was hers, now belongs to the baby down the hall"

  • But with that, this song also represents the "circle of life", where as one life ends and another begins.

  • Comment removed

  • my OPINION(that means dont send me shit sayin how wrong i am cuz this is MY opinion) is that this song is about a mother dying during birth and how it affects the baby....like i said thats my opinion and not a fact i can back up

  • That's fine but don't be pissed at those of us who know the story and post it. Damn admit you're wrong and get over it.

  • I hope you all know you all are arguing over a 90s band.

  • 90's Band?? Hell, they have done a lot more than that--some of their best work was done in the past 5 years. Now, the arguing, I'll agree on--kind of pointless when you are arguing with an idiot!! I say cut your losses with some of these dorks and be glad your own brain cells didn't die...

  • Best work over the past 5 years??? And you're calling other people idiot??

Their 90's work was their best, no debating it. I still like Live but comparing their new work against their old is beyond moronic.

It's the reason why both Chads and Pat left the band and Live is nor more. They want to make rock music and Ed wants to continue with his la de da the river shit fuck music. good riddance

  • I must say that your knowledge of music is very, very poor indeed. As far as Live is concerned, don't say another word coz you obviously know NOTHING about them. Personal tastes are not to be discussed, but some things are just facts. Listen to their first few albums, then come back to their most recent work. Still thinking the same?

  • I'm guessing you don't have a clue of the meanings behind this song and it's dedications. STFU and speak only when you're spoken to.

  • Yeah, ok, you're the only person in the world knowing something about Live and their work. You're a complete moron, are you aware of that at all? And let people enjoy Live's music coz NO ONE is 'enjoying' your comments. Or taking em seriously...

  • Someone smarter than you? Damn, you're trying SO hard to make up for your own shortcomings.

  • And you're still talking?

  • You're a total psychic if you can hear voices through typing! Wow, call Jerry Springer! And you're still replying? Must have hit a nerve, "peewee" or you'd not be so sensitive.

  • No, called him but he ain't answering. You take a pill in the meantime and give him a call, too! ;-)

  • He knows a loser on the other end of the phone. You're a patheticwaste of skin. Maybe you should get a JOB or a GRIP.

  • I got both, you obviously got none. Still haven't taken that pill, have ya?

  • You have nothign of any substance or intelligence to offer. Yu've long since been bested. Pill for you: cynide. Better things to do than TRY to instruct you, loser, you'll never make it.

  • I'll take it, so I won't have to listen to yer shit anymore. :)

  • A blessing for us all! Die, puss, die!

  • Ok, now go screw yerself in the ass, you self-loving prick!

  • @jugradeka Shut the fuck up.

  • Easy, tiger, I didn't pick a fight, so you're talking to the wrong one.

  • @jugradeka: I sent it to the both of you. I'd much rather read comments about what people think of the song than this shit.

  • andypantz Shut the fuck up.

  • @1strwbryblondnc Shut the fuck up.

  • Jealous little retard. Go play in traffic.

  • @1strwbryblondnc: I am oh so jealous of your virtual insulting skills.

  • Good! Now maybe you'll shut up.

  • Speaking of fools Bradster0007, where did you learn how to spell?

Anyways, I think this song is pretty much open to different interpretations. In any case, it is a beautiful song with very powerful lyrics.

  • ugh i cant seek back without the whole thing starting to load again!

  • i kno.. gay

  • originally i took the meaning of this song about a mother dying during birth, honestly as a guy who will become a father someday it scares the living crap out of me. it's an awesome song either way

  • Its not about that. its about a mother having a baby as another woman is dying. its the life cyle.

  • i said originally

  • It's a tribute to a friend of the band that was killed by a drunk driver. She was an organ donot, the song refers to her eyes (opening and closing) , the new life given, the donor's life lost. It's more pro-organ donation than anything, giving quality of life to someone who needs it, unfortunately someone lost their life to donate, it's not all in vain.

  • ya dork

  • Ya dickless wonder - too bad I know something you don't? STFU asswipe!

  • Wow, i never got what this about, it really adds a deep meaning to a deep song, thanks :D

  • I so love this song

  • dude deagla please stfu thanks.

  • awesome song from the earily 90s

  • oh my feeling touching my retelin from the scoping of a bin ladin

  • I am the 1,234,567 visitor. How cool. Fuckn great song.

  • i reli like this song it such a kwl song...nwt sure bwt the video haha nah its awesome...

  • that was sad. saddest ever

  • The band dedicated this to Barbara Lewis, one of their high school friends who was killed by a drunk driver around the time this song was written. Barb donated several organs, including her heart. She was close with Ed and the guys and died in a car collision with a fleeing armed robber. These lyrics are constantly misunderstood!

  • It was a drunk driver that hit her. But yeah, the rest is right. Some people below can't read English!! The song was written before her death but they have adopted it as a tribute to her.

  • this song always makes me tear up

  • I think I have to agree with what 1strwbryblondnc said. What else would all these people do in this clip? And why would the band step out their own bodies, as it looks? Besides: remember that you must never take lyrics literally. It's so boring when you sing: she died and gave everything to others. It wouldn't last a whole song.

  • this song is about a miscarriage, idk what you guys are talking about

  • its about a woman who dies after giving birth
