The movie isn't racist for the times it was produced in, in fact it portrays black people as deserving of sympathy, which is probably as good as it got for the 30s. On the other hand, yeah it's racist, painfully racist. It's showing how far we've come in accepting black people to look at today. They've come a long way? I'd say "we" have come a long way. We're in this together.
