...actually... ahem, Metallica came after Motorhead which were the first "thrash" band- leaving behind metal's more Blues based energy- thrash was the hybrid of Metal with the Punk speed and aggression. Metallica opens gives credit to the Misfits and Motorhead for inspiring their sound. Punk only got it's name in the late 70's, it was actually around for much longer- Hardcore and Thrash metal began at the same time being metal and punk swapping influences with eachother.
