Takes me back to when I was driving on Colorado Blvd. in my shiny red Dodge Challenger R/T conv/440 sixpack and the 4 speed early one sunday morning and this song came on the radio (KRTH).
The 1964 Dodge Polara Super Stock edition with a 426 Max Wedge Ram-Charger motor with Stage III cylinder heads and 12.5:1 pistons was factory rated at 425 bhp but was more like 500+ hp to the keep insurance prices down. No doubt there was nobody meaner! :-)
a good time to mobs to bother with advertising. Appears every Monday on breeding! The latest concoction of super worm. Monday. Remember those days. Monday.
What you are hearing here is an actual Beach Boys recording of this tune, not Jan and Dean. The tune was written in 1960 by Jan and two other guys and first recorded by Jan and Dean.
Yes, it was Jan and Dean that sang this song, not the Beach Boys. Brian Wilson only sang back up. Beach Boys did Barbara Ann, and the singer from Jan and Dean backed them up on that. They collaborated alot which is why their sounds are very similar, and it used to anger their managers when they did.
Audio seems as if speed enhanced - [§:(€]. I Like the surprise additional verse. Also appreciate the streaming lyrics, but puzzled by the non-English insertions. Thanks for the interesting upload. 4-stars.
@zzgizz01 Yes, faster speed not as good IMHO. Some of the Beach boy songs sound slowed down also. This was my generation and never could figure out the differences in speed then. Maybe that is the answer: Speed? or sometimes the Lack of 'Speed' if you get my drift.
@oldermusiclover Yes, the "missing" verse! I have an old book that has the lyrics with that included. I guess it was this version I heard years ago on local oldies radio, as I was blown away when that verse was included. I wasn't paying attention I guess, as I've looked for it for years, thinking it was an extended Jan & Dean cut.
Brian Wilson did not write this song. You are thinking of "Surf City" which Brian wrote and sang falsetto on the hit recording. It was his first #1 hit, and it wasn't with the Beach Boys.
Respectfully, Don Altfeld, Jan Berry and Roger Christian wrote this song. They are the ones credited with it and the ones who receive royalties from it. Check any Brian Wilson discography, and you will NOT find it listed.
The confusion probably comes from Roger "Hot DogRog" Christian's involvement, since he collaborated with Brian on so many of the car songs the Beach boys had success with.
When the band recorded this Jan & Dean song, was this during the time when Glen Campbell was playing with the band? I remember that he was a Beach Boy for awhile, but can't recall what years he was with the band. Can anyone tell me that info?
Glen Campbell toured for about six months in the 1965-66 time frame. He was one of the session musicians Brian sometimes used during his early recordings. When he left the touring band, Brian said to Glen he was dumb. "Guess I'm Dumb" was Glen's reported response. Brian then wrote the song for Glen. I don't know if it's true, but it makes a good story.
This song comes from a pitch used by used car salesmen in California, when asked who was the last owner of a certain car. The answer they gave was "A little old lady from Pasadena, and she just drove it to and from church on Sundays." Now we see what that little old lady was really doing.
Believe it or not....my 98 year old grandmother used to live in Pasadena, Maryland. Ok, ....its not the same Pasadena, but still she was the little old lady from Pasadena, lol.
This song reminds me of Forest Hills, Queens, in the early 1980's. There were all these old ladies who drove sedans that they could barely see out of. When my mom saw one of them she'd yell "shit another old lady behind the wheel" and she get out of the way FAST.
