Thanks for posting this classic video from "Groundhog Day". The sheet music for the boogie-woogie piano part on "Phil's Piano Solo" can be found at manymidi.com/sheetmusic.htm - a note-for-note transcription of this great piano part!
@jallar4 He sorta tried.. after a certain time passed he just woke up again :p (movie doesn't show how this actually happens, it just cuts of to the morning)
Everybody knows the rhapsody on a theme song, but whats the first one? i cant believe it would have been specifically written for this film and im pretty sure i've heard it before, any ideas?
@Barnsleyfc4life The song was written, performed and produced by Terry Fryer according to IMDb. under Groundhog Day. I'd like to see more of Fryer's work. He also wrote/played for Dirty Dancing.
If anyone is interested, I figured out by "ear" the fast part of Bill Murray's solo from this scene. You can see it/hear it here. It's pretty "notey" so I tried my best to be as accurate as possible. I can't post links apparently so just click my name to listen to it!
@Scarentertainmentllc Yes. I am interested actually. You did a really great job working it out/playing. I just realised that this scene is basically what motivated me to start piano - and the concept that a little bit of practice every day adds up over time. Here I am 8 years down the track and have started using your vid to work from. Would be great if you could do a tut though because it is a tricky one. I would classify it as quite New Orleans bluesey. A bit Dr John.
@MrRancidmeat the whole track's named "Terry Fryer - Medley: Phil's Piano Solo (Eighteenth Variation From Rapsodie On A Theme Of Paganini)" which includes the needed part.)
If anybody needs, I can send it by email - write me a private message)
Great movie, great scene except the music is a major let-down when he moves into jazz. If he had actually played the classical piece, the audience would have been on the floor with tears of passion. I still love the movie but think that it was a mistake not to play the classical version.
haha yeah it was, i'd have to disagree though I loved the interchange from classical to jazz it had good dynamics. Plus playing a classical piece to an audience that just danced to blues wouldnt really fit the mood, u know what I mean?
ok so, the first song he plays, the first 50 seconds. that is just improvised or is the second song the improvised one. and if the first song is not improvised what is it called?
the first part (the fast part) is strictly improvised by the musician who is actually playing it. It's not being played by Bill Murray. I spoke with the actual musician who played this number in the movie. There is no name for the piece. Strictly an improv.
PLEEEESE PEOPLE can anybody tell me what is the name that theme he plays - the slow moment. I have been looking to the name of the tune for more than 20 years. Please HELP, tell me how it is called so I could find the score finally. Thanks

if your wondering what the first part of the song is, your not gonna find it. its just a solo, just improvised or a progression of some kind.

maniac2040 2 years ago
You mean the film? I don't know when it came out, I was around 15-16, so now 36, 20 years isn't it?
Rita50 2 years ago
It came out in 1993. It's only been 17 years. You must've been a bit older than you think.
maniac2040 2 years ago
Well, I was 19 then. I seemed like I was 15. I had a long happy childhood you see so I cannot remember such little detail like age.
