The driver in the Porsche says its himself "im driving quite hard" the Mclaren is using maybe 70 percent of its potential plus the driver is slowing down and taking corners way to slow and braking much earlier than the Porsche. What alot of you people don't realise is that this is a very twisty circuit with hardly any straights. This is the sort of track a GT3 RS excels on. The Mac does'nt have a chance to use it's power advantage over the Porka. On a faster track like the Top Gear test track the Mac set an awsome time, being second quickest only to the Ariel Atom V8, beating the Veyron Super sport and was nearly 3 seconds quicker that the Ferrari 458!! It all depends on what kind of track your racing on!

@frankietiddles keep in mind the cars that mac beat were all driven by a different driver, I mean you don't really believe it's actually 3 seconds faster than a 458? especially considering the 458 is usually quicker on most other circuits. and actually, the driver that put down that 458 time (ben collins, old stig), did a road test between the 2 and a few others, the 458 beat the mac by over 2 seconds. so top gear ain't the best example but I agree, the Mac is much faster than the gt3 rs

It's not a fair race even in the video they say that the GT3 RS cost half as much as the McLaren. Try a Porsche that costs the same like the GT2 RS or even the GT3 4.0 and then we will see...
For crying out loud, who cares which car is 0.01 seconds faster per lap than the other, I'd give an arm and a leg just to own (or even drive) either of them!

I don't see why everyone compares other cars of the Porsche Turbo and the GT3 RS, they should be comparing them to the GT2 RS which is currently the best Porsche. If you just go on real laps times and not people's opinion you will find that very few and I mean very few cars out there actually beat the times that the GT2 RS has put up.
@tryceo Got to agree with that. The guy driving the Mclaren is taking some really poor lines and it looks a lot like sandbagging to keep it looking close. Swap drivers and the Mclaren will be gone in a lap. Also the GT3RS is a stripped out road legal trackday car. The Mclaren is a comft GT - completely different ideas behind how they're designed. Should be against a 911 turbo in full road trim for a more fair comparisson.

Two things are happening here to make the race seem closer than it should have been: the McLaren driver is too afraid to go all out, and the Porsche driver is just mimicking the moves of the McLaren, almost like enabling the "optimal line" assist in a video game. If they really wanted to see what the faster car was, they would have used the same driver, and ran each car separately.

I like Autocar but this review is on the nonsense side. why put a 2nd tier track car up against a 1st tier super car? If you want to go against the 12C, Italia, you need to bring out the GT2 RS.
The McLaren might win on a track, but in the end, even if i were given it for free and didn't need to think for a second about spare parts and fuel economy i would still buy the Porsche. The engine might be in the wrong place, and it might not be very pretty, probably a lot more uncomfortable then the McLaren as well, but it has a real manual gearbox. Speed don't matter that much, the sense of driving does, and a manual gearbox i think, is essential to any real drivers car.
it keeping up with the mclaren in the corners makes sense... but off the track, its a no brainer... The purpose of this review ? no idea.. i havn't learn anything new about either car... a club racer with semi-slicks is as fast as a sophisticated supercar on standard performance tyres... if anything it compliments the mclaren.. but thats nothing new either..

McLaren embarrassed itself here. V8 Turbo Carbon Fiber chassis car can't pull away from naturally aspirated 6 cylinder car on a metal chassis. That's pretty bad. Thumbs up for Porsche !
@g1981c put on the slicks and see how the McLaren will trash the GT3. Don't forget these road cars wear road tires and they pull one g max around corners, that's why GT3 can keep up in corners, but no chance once coming out of corners. Put on the slicks the McLaren will fly away in just a lap. The 12C is designed to compete with 458, GT2 RS, not the GT3.
when I say put on the slicks I meant put on the soft compound on both cars, street radials can only give you a G, regardless of how good the car is. The lower CG of the 12C and the hydraulic anti roll system means it can pull more g's in a corner, which translates into 'faster' cornering speed. With that and also it can put power down faster exiting corner and it's more horses on the straight......it will trash the GT3.
Like I said before, Bring out the GT2 RS, not the GT3.

And as your point of view about the Semi Slick or Slick tires. I think if you put the same tires in both cars, results would not vary a bit. GT3 RS is lighter and specifically designed for track racing. Yes if you bring Porsche Turbo S here, that would be interesting, because Turbo S is not track car and hence Acceleration is fast
@golferchin76 If you make head to head track racing between Mclaren 12C and Porsche 997 Turbo S in the same track, Story will be different. We cannot say who will gonna win, but my heart says that Turbo would gonna win, because Turbo Accelerate fast, and in straight it will not lose to 12C, and in corners its tricky, maybe 12C would be good in Cornering, or maybe both cars would be same in cornering, I wish they test Turbo S and 12C in the same track.
By the way, any RS badged Porsche always come with semi slicks, while the 12C wears the street radial.
I am not a fanboy or hater. I just know race car physics from racing. I like the GT3 RS because it is a RS, I don't really fancy the 12C because I think it is but-ugly IMO.

Porsche is rear engined car, engineering point of view Porsche should not be considered as a race car, but Bravo for the Porsche Engineering team that they are beating mid engined cars with their rear engined cars with Flat Six Engines...This is the achievement.
I like Porsches and it's technology, but seems like it takes more a more skilled driver and more concentration required to drive the Porsche, where the McLaren seems to be a more relaxed car to drive fast. I'd take MP4 for everyday driving and GT3 RS for the track =)
@g1981c Well, the guy speaking in the video admits that he's having trouble keeping up with the McLaren and that it pulls away on the straights, and he can only catch it with braking. He also admits that the Porsche is LIGHTER than the McLaren which will obviously help the Porsche in braking. I have great admiration for both cars. But the McLaren is the better car in this test.

@rhfuh GT3 RS is nowhere close to being the fastest Porsche. It has been called the Best Handling car by some - Yes. But it is not, and was never supposed to be, the fastest Porsche by any measure. There are several faster models, such as GT3 RS 4.0, GT2 RS, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder.

@SUP3RJ3W113 The GT2 RS and the GT3 RS are both meant to be used on the track (but you can do it on the streets). The non RS version of both, are mainly meant to be used on the road, so they should put the GT3 (non RS) in the front of the MP4 12C and the GT2 (non RS) in the back.

Bottom line: Two very different cars and whomever is passionate about one isn't about the other. They should have had a GT2 RS on hand so the power levels of the cars would have been somewhere close. Most testers say that the GT2 is nearly as sublime as its little brothers. I seem to remember a lot of magazines saying that the GT2 would smoke anything with less than 700 hp. Although entertaining, this vid draws no conclusions.
If they had tested two identical cars, the front one would have pulled away on the straits, and the second one would have been back on it's tail under braking. It's natural: the front one accelerates sooner = pulls away, but has to brake sooner too... So this video proves nothing :D
I saw a Porsche destroy a Viper on the Nurburgring in a video on YouTube. I love both the Porsche and Mclaren. I have a Mclaren F1 poster above my computer and the MP4-12c as my wallpaper on my laptop. Both are great cars but they should have tested the GT2 or the RS 4.0
the RS 4.0 stands no chance. The GT2 RS might have the straight line performance to keep up with the McLaren, but will it stick in the corners?
At the end of the day it is who can put the power down to the asphalt quicker and longer. I race in heavily modified NA series and if the front car has a power advantage over you, and you can't keep up, not even creating a chance to over take, putting pressure on him, then you get no chance at all.
i think in this case they are a little bias to the mclaren because it's british. in the twisty stuff and braking, the porsche was gaining on it easily, let alone keeping up.
i personally never judge how good a car is in a straight line cause even americans can do that. in the corners is where it counts and in this case, porsche wins again. all that fancy electonic stuff can't beat porsche's well sorted suspension, manual rear engine masterpiece.
Need we 5 min vid to know that a lighter car is faster through the corners and a car with 200 more bhp is faster on straight? Porsche all the way for me.
the porsche is half the price, invest 30k into the porsche and it will still be much cheaper then the Mclaren and it will rape it... Dont get me wrong, mp4-12c is def. one of my favorite cars on the market but the gt3 rs is a better car of the money for sure, and i personally think it looks more bad-ass!

I like Autocar but this review is on the nonsense side. why put a 2nd tier track car up against a 1st tier super car? If you want to go against the 12C, Italia, you need to bring out the GT2 RS.

The McLaren might win on a track, but in the end, even if i were given it for free and didn't need to think for a second about spare parts and fuel economy i would still buy the Porsche. The engine might be in the wrong place, and it might not be very pretty, probably a lot more uncomfortable then the McLaren as well, but it has a real manual gearbox. Speed don't matter that much, the sense of driving does, and a manual gearbox i think, is essential to any real drivers car.

it keeping up with the mclaren in the corners makes sense... but off the track, its a no brainer... The purpose of this review ? no idea.. i havn't learn anything new about either car... a club racer with semi-slicks is as fast as a sophisticated supercar on standard performance tyres... if anything it compliments the mclaren.. but thats nothing new either..

Don't forget these road cars wear road tires and they pull one g max around corners, that's why GT3 can keep up in corners, but no chance once coming out of corners. Put on the slicks the McLaren will fly away in just a lap. The 12C is designed to compete with 458, GT2 RS, not the GT3.

when I say put on the slicks I meant put on the soft compound on both cars, street radials can only give you a G, regardless of how good the car is. The lower CG of the 12C and the hydraulic anti roll system means it can pull more g's in a corner, which translates into 'faster' cornering speed. With that and also it can put power down faster exiting corner and it's more horses on the straight......it will trash the GT3.
Like I said before, Bring out the GT2 RS, not the GT3.

And as your point of view about the Semi Slick or Slick tires. I think if you put the same tires in both cars, results would not vary a bit. GT3 RS is lighter and specifically designed for track racing. Yes if you bring Porsche Turbo S here, that would be interesting, because Turbo S is not track car and hence Acceleration is fast

@golferchin76 If you make head to head track racing between Mclaren 12C and Porsche 997 Turbo S in the same track, Story will be different. We cannot say who will gonna win, but my heart says that Turbo would gonna win, because Turbo Accelerate fast, and in straight it will not lose to 12C, and in corners its tricky, maybe 12C would be good in Cornering, or maybe both cars would be same in cornering, I wish they test Turbo S and 12C in the same track.

A GT3 with RS badge is respectable, but put it up against the 12C or something similar like a Ferrari Italia....then it is going to get destroyed.

I am not a fanboy or hater. I just know race car physics from racing. I like the GT3 RS because it is a RS, I don't really fancy the 12C because I think it is but-ugly IMO.

Porsche is rear engined car, engineering point of view Porsche should not be considered as a race car, but Bravo for the Porsche Engineering team that they are beating mid engined cars with their rear engined cars with Flat Six Engines...This is the achievement.

I like Porsches and it's technology, but seems like it takes more a more skilled driver and more concentration required to drive the Porsche, where the McLaren seems to be a more relaxed car to drive fast. I'd take MP4 for everyday driving and GT3 RS for the track =)

@g1981c Well, the guy speaking in the video admits that he's having trouble keeping up with the McLaren and that it pulls away on the straights, and he can only catch it with braking. He also admits that the Porsche is LIGHTER than the McLaren which will obviously help the Porsche in braking. I have great admiration for both cars. But the McLaren is the better car in this test.

@rhfuh GT3 RS is nowhere close to being the fastest Porsche. It has been called the Best Handling car by some - Yes. But it is not, and was never supposed to be, the fastest Porsche by any measure. There are several faster models, such as GT3 RS 4.0, GT2 RS, Carrera GT and 918 Spyder.

Once in decade, they build a supercar and now they do everything in their power to promote (and kiss the factory's rear end) the thing, even putting it in unfair matches against the Porsche 911 GT3. Why didn't you pommies pitch it against the GT2 RS? Same relative HP, although most certainly will kick the McLaren's rear end. See what Fifth Gear thought about against the 458?! No doubt it will beat 12C. why wouldnt they use the GT2 RS? the GT3 RS is more of a track day car. I mean yes you can use the gt3 on the road but it was really meant for the track while the gt2 was more meant for the road. correct me if im wrong. but hey thats just my two cents.

@SUP3RJ3W113 The GT2 RS and the GT3 RS are both meant to be used on the track (but you can do it on the streets). The non RS version of both, are mainly meant to be used on the road, so they should put the GT3 (non RS) in the front of the MP4 12C and the GT2 (non RS) in the back.

Bottom line: Two very different cars and whomever is passionate about one isn't about the other. They should have had a GT2 RS on hand so the power levels of the cars would have been somewhere close. Most testers say that the GT2 is nearly as sublime as its little brothers. I seem to remember a lot of magazines saying that the GT2 would smoke anything with less than 700 hp. Although entertaining, this vid draws no conclusions.

If they had tested two identical cars, the front one would have pulled away on the straits, and the second one would have been back on it's tail under braking. It's natural: the front one accelerates sooner = pulls away, but has to brake sooner too... So this video proves nothing :D

I saw a Porsche destroy a Viper on the Nurburgring in a video on YouTube. I love both the Porsche and Mclaren. I have a Mclaren F1 poster above my computer and the MP4-12c as my wallpaper on my laptop. Both are great cars but they should have tested the GT2 or the RS 4.0

the RS 4.0 stands no chance. The GT2 RS might have the straight line performance to keep up with the McLaren, but will it stick in the corners?
At the end of the day it is who can put the power down to the asphalt quicker and longer. I race in heavily modified NA series and if the front car has a power advantage over you, and you can't keep up, not even creating a chance to over take, putting pressure on him, then you get no chance at all.

i think in this case they are a little bias to the mclaren because it's british. in the twisty stuff and braking, the porsche was gaining on it easily, let alone keeping up.
i personally never judge how good a car is in a straight line cause even americans can do that. in the corners is where it counts and in this case, porsche wins again. all that fancy electonic stuff can't beat porsche's well sorted suspension, manual rear engine masterpiece.
