The coolest thing about this video I think is pointing out the fact you have the choice to move between any distro you happen to like. Dislike this one, move to that one. Dislike this aspect, hack it up yourself. Oh yes, choice is good. I dont care which one you use but use GNU/Linux. Heck, compose your own!
I really like fedora. I started there with Fedora Core 1. I like the file structure better in fedora, maybe I'm just use to it. We use Fedora at work so when I have to configure something I know right where to go, on Ubuntu I have to look things up at times. I also love chkconfig, I wish ubuntu had something like this installed by default.
But I do like the apt package manager way better than yum. I always seam to run into problems with yum and I haven't run into any with apt.
Yum has definitely come a long way in the last few years. The old stereotype was "if you use yum, you'll constantly be fighting to find dependencies". not so much anymore.
btw off topic: @thisweekinlinux the ubuntu one music store preview is out, take a look at it (alan pope's blog). would like to know what u think of it.
I haven't had a chance to look at the music store yet, but if it's in Alpha 3 I'll load my virtual machine back up and check it out. Thanks TheArnabDas!
Since a long time i wanted to try out Fedora, so now i may be install it after its new release. But nevertheless, Ubuntu will be my clear number one, its stable, its most popular and so brings the Linux-Revolution into the future. But as i said, i am curious about Fedora, so i cant wait to see the release. Maybe it got a slogan then, who knows ?
That's exactly what it felt like to me. So many things just didn't feel finished. I definitely hope that 10.04 fixes all those things. We'll see what happens between it and Fedora 13. I'm really excited about that release as well.
I use Fedora 12, and love it! It even works pretty good with my netbook, Acer Aspire One A110, yes that 8GB SSD with 512MB RAM.... Everything works out of the box, and is pretty fast, and I haven't even begun to do any fine tuning.....
There is only one thing I would love NOT to see in a new Fedora release - a newest X server. Since I'm using ATI graphics card, I constantly have to wait few months for AMD driver team to release a working video driver. Due to driver incompatibility with X server 1.7 currently there are no proprietary ATI drivers that could work in Fedora 12, so I'm still forced to use Fedora 11. When Fedora 13 comes out, maybe it will be time to finally move to Fedora 12.
None of them will work on Fedora 12 yet. Only Mesa 7.8 experimental drivers are acceptable and also has acceleration functionality. The most stable proprietary ATI drivers for Fedora 11 are 9.10 (they need DDX hack though, but has support for OpenGL 2.1) and 10.2 (supports OpenGL 3.2).
since i started using Ubuntu with 7.10, I have run into more problems on .10 releases of Ubuntu than .04 releases. 9.10 doubled my boot time to almost 2 minutes. I got tired of that and other issues after just 1 month so i joined the 10.04 alpha. While some updates break things for a few hours, in general its a better Ubuntu already. My boot time has never been faster and it is getting 29 seconds consistently. By the time it comes out at the end of April, I think it will be very good.
the .04 releases appear to be better than the .10 releases mainly because every other one is an "LTS" release (long-term support) meaning they have to make them as stable as possible, so they don't take any chances and mainly bugfix.
That said, Ubuntu 10.04 will most likely be pretty nice, since it's the next LTS release.
I used to get really down on Fedora/Red Hat's RPM system because everyone said if was horrible with dependencies. I've been on Fedora for a few months now and haven't had that problem.
The worst issues I've had are with 3rd party software/sources, and the time I accidentally enabled the "testing" repos.
In particular, I updated my laptop last night. The KDE 4.4 libs installed, and Kdenlive stopped working. I talked to someone on the Fedora marketing team, and he had it fixed in minutes
in particular, in Ubuntu 9.10 my laptop's battery wouldn't charge. it's a known bug, and it'll hopefully be taken care of in 10.04. Kdenlive was also very laggy/jumpy when showing the Project Monitor, so I couldn't make videos with it easily. Also, like I said before, capturing USB audio was just not doable for me. It lagged just enough that I couldn't sync it to video.
The main differences between Fedora and Ubuntu are in the package management. Fedora uses RPMs, and Ubuntu uses DEBs. Probably means very little.
In my case, I had quite a few issues with Ubuntu 9.10, and Fedora didn't have those issues (or if it does, they're not nearly as bad). Also, the sound system in Ubuntu is really laggy in capturing USB audio, at least in my case, and Fedora is not.
10 sec startup would be really nice, and they've been claiming it's going to happen since 9.04 I believe, but without SSDs and really decent hardware, I haven't seen it yet.
If I remember correctly, they were achieving it by setting a lot of the background stuff to run after the desktop loads, which is kinda a step in the Windows direction. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong there.
Do you have a bunch of resources devoted to it? I actually just installed 10.04 alpha 3 on Virtualbox 3.1.4, default install of Ubuntu, not even updated, on an Intel Core2Duo with 1Gb of ram devoted to it, and it takes 1min 5 seconds at least here.
I tried both 512mb and 1Gb on it, and it made no difference here. Of course I've got a 5400rpm drive in my laptop, so that probably makes a huge difference.

@daeamarth :) I agree entirely, and I've been doing a lot of moving around lately for the distro reviews. Loads of fun.

lol kidding aside, yeah ubuntu 9.10 imo was a beta/alpha release. hope 10.04 improves things.

I am about tired of the .deb system.

What were the issues that made you give up Ubuntu?
I feel like Fedora is more 'commercialized', for some reason. I don't know why.
