@zapdelivers I always used a shoe box lid to clean my weed. The box made it handy to keep a couple of packs of Zig Zag and/or a pipe or stone. Bongs hadn't even caught on yet! :) Those days were great and this music was the soundtrack to our lives.
@zapdelivers In 74' in the Dallas area I remember a 4 finger lid costing just $7. And a $10 concert ticket then was high priced. A couple concerts at the fair grounds in Ft Worth: the Good Will Festival, we got into for a few cans of food donated, another was just $2, and all day concerts at that. Ahhh, the good ole days. lol
@modal11 - Yes, he was and really missed. . . he played locally in Harrisburg, PA with a band called the Legends, they were great. . .miss those old days.
I was one of the girls that ditched High School to attend tapings of Don Kirshner at the Long Beach CA Auditorium...every Wednesday..I think...anyways..I`m laughing about the lid comments...everytime there was a crappy band on we`d go "smoke" in the hallway..it got so bad with the empty audience they started locking us in! I saw Edgar Winter...we never knew who was gonna` show up...those were the days...
@AngryKiko He also co-wrote the James Brown hit "Living In America" with Charlie Midnight. That song blew up from being in one of the Rocky movies. Dan Hartman was prolific as all get out. The era that this clip was from was only the beginning. He was an amazing dude.
Dan Hartman was super talented! The story was that Derringer and Montrose could not cut the Rhythm parts and Hartman played them on the recording...Looking at this video- he has a doubleneck guitar- Bass and Guitar so he can play those killer parts! He is from Harrisburg, PA. he was playing with his brothers since he was 5!! He was the oil that greased this great band!
Yes! Glittery spacesuits, capes, long hair, the Giuffria-looking keyboard guitar thingimajig, awesome guitar... All the stars aligned on this one. I now have a new favorite video on youtube.
I think that Dan Hartman (not sure on last name) what a talented guy..did the song "I can Dream about You" for Street of Fire" Soundtrack and did ALOT of great music. Very underappreciatted, im ny view. What a voice what a talent. GtrGeorge
@smokinbluzvalv That's a one of a kind custom from the Guitar Lab in NYC. It was built by Charlie LaBoue. Story was Rick owned one of the originals Explorers from the 50's and didn't want to take it on the road. He had that one built and used it until some little hole in wall company named BC Rich put a Mockingbird in his hands. Sad part of the story is the RD & Friends CD was a benefit concert to help replace the bands stolen equipment. The original Explore was stolen in that theft.
@jimdoire wow, mr. guitar encyclopedia, thanx r the info, it's a complement, not sarcasm. I have Dan Hartman's bass pick that I caught when he threw it out into the crowd, circa hmmmm... 1974.
@kai223noa OK, great bit of trivia; didn't know his real name. I always assumed he chose Derringer because he was so little but still wanted the name to sound kinda bad-ass
@tegolin Yup, Telecaster Bass neck on the top and a Strat neck on the bottom. What was really awesome was that he could play both during the same song and sing lead vocals. There wasn't a lot Dan Hartman couldn't do.
@76SRV190 Rick was born in 1947 and this aired in 1974 so he was 26 or 27. I saw him not too long ago and he's really been taking care of himself and still looks young. One the most underrated players in history.

@xgmb45 The did get around to calling it the Edgar Winter Group w/Rick Derringer. But honestly, Rick was playing with three musicians of equal caliber. All four of these dudes were B-A-D.
@MrTubejockey I was at one of these concerts and remember them doing this tune. Dan Hartman threw his pick out and I frikkin caught the dam thing. Don't know where that pick is now, and yeah we had a $10 "lid" and some zigzags with us. Peace bro...
@MrTubejockey Shit! $5 to get into the kings beach bowl! Lydia Penske, Cold Blood, missed some of the best, Steppenwolf, Santana, those were the days!
@timothycooper123 Really? I've worked for Edgar on and off for the best six years. I'm not involved in his personal life too much but you don't have to be that close to these answers. What's Edgar's wife name and what are the names of her two dogs? Any "friend" of Edgar would know. Also where's he living these days?
@jimdoire were talking about mid to late seventy's when he played at the sam houston colluseum but you probably werent alive then assholeand thanks for being such a smart know it all asshole and i fucked your mom
Wow. My first concert ever was the Edgar Winter band with Rick Derringer and Dan Hartmann. Foghat was the opening band. That was 1974. It looked a lot like this.
Dan Hartman was great. He was the glue. As a bass player and singer, I know it's a hard road to sing that and play at same time. That gold suit is soo retro.
You get some idea how tiny Rick D. is here by the size of his guitar. I met him once down in Miami, and he's about 5 feet tall-and one hell of a guitarist.
My uncle was the original drummer for this band Bobby Ramirez , he was 23 when he was killed by a puerto rico gang because his hair was to long but i agree the music talent is nothing compared to this
@143coolwhip - Bobby was in White Trash right? Great drummer. He could have fit nicely in this band. He had some chops. Why would the Puerto Ricans kill him for having hair too long? That's insane. He was beaten to death wasn't he? Man, that's a shame for anyone to have that happen but Bobby entertained so many people.
I'm proud to say I was right there 1971 when they recorded free ride and cooche coo. All nite long. WOW O WOW what a nite!!!!! Edgar is soooo amazingly talented.
this was always one of my favorite car songs. It has a hook you can hang your hat on and they rock good and hard. It would be fun to play this in a band. Rick Derringer is very impressive live.
