I used to always watch Gigantor with my dad in the morning before school. For those of you who don't know, this song is a theme song for an old TV show & it was really good.
When singing live with a rock band,it is often very difficult to hear yourself sing over the drums and amps on stage. The floor monitors (I.e.- speakers) for the singer to hear himself/herself are often are not loud enough. So- Leonard plugs up his ear to hear himself sing better. I have no idea why he doesn't just plug up his left ear up with an earplug instead though- that seems like a better option and it would free his hand up so he can throw bananas at the audience.
It isn't just plugging the ear and keeping the external sound out, but the pressure on the little flap toward the back of your earlobe causes the note you are singing to transmit through your skull directly into the ear, not only decreasing the rest of the stage sound, but increasing the actual tone of your own voice. The effect is noticeable even in an otherwise quiet setting!
