One source I found says Clapton gave it to Harrison, who gave it to Rundgren. Another source says Harrison gave it to Clapton. Both sources seem like they SHOULD know!
A guy i know says it got stolen from Clapton and Todd ended up with it. Then again, he basically got booted out of LA for doing too much Heroin. How do you do that?
My point to him was that regardeless, Eric couldn't begin to dream of making that guitar sound like Todd could. And I live in Tulsa, so I'm supposed to worship Clapton or something, but quite frankly, I think he's a hack compared to so many others (including Todd), not to mention his most famous song was about anoher man's wife.
George Harrison originally owned the SG, had it painted by an art collective known as 'The Fool' (hence 'Fool guitar') who did a lot of stuff for the Beatles. George gave it to Clapton then Jackie Lomax had it and gave it to Todd as collateral for a financial loan on the understanding that he could later buy it back. After several years it was assumed Lomax wouldn't be buying it back so Todd kept it before finally giving or selling it to a private collector. The guitar in this clip is a copy.
Todd has had this copy since 1988. It was painted by a Japanese fan and given to him as a gift when he toured Japan in 1988.
The original Fool was given to Todd by Jackie Lomax as collateral for a loan and Todd used it on tour in 73 and 74 before putting it away for a few years as it was starting to fall apart. He had it repaired and the paint retouched and brought it back out occasionally in the 80's, then retired it from the road in the early 90's and sold it in 1999.
Todd Owned and used claptons guitar . It was a Gibson SG . The guitar was used in claptons early career and Todd used it for over twenty years . It is now a worn out relic which is privately owned by someone other than Todd .The Guitar was named "the fool " in reference to the original artwork on the body . I think Clapton got it off George Harrison .. which may Have inspired the performance of this cut Correct me if I am wrong .
Check out the trapeze tailpiece on TR's Les Paul on Black Maria and compare it to this stop tailpiece version. Originals, copies, Clapton's, the Taxman?
After watching WMGGW on Concert for George last night we got out Concert for Bangladesh and watched the version I grew up on. I remembered seeing Todd perform it several times over the years...voila!!!here it is the next best thing to live. Long Live Youtube
I saw this tour at the Turning Stone casino. John Entwistle died not too long after. Very sad. Each of the four did a couple of their own songs in the first half of the show, and the second half was all Beatles. Great show.
That is Claptons SG. He must have needed money. Think about it. That has got to be the most expensive and desireable rock collectible. The guitar crossroads and spoonful were recorded with on wheels of fire. WOW
wouldn't you know it. one of my faves, todd rundgren, singing another one of my fave's: george harrison. they have that same spirit. deep souls. their music tugs at the heart.
@eamonosu actually, eric clapton, one of georges best friends, and still was when he passed, played all those infectious licks on the original recording of "while my guitar gently weeps."
@eamonosu the solos of the original "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" were played by Eric Clapton, not George Harrison. Clapton and Harrison were once good friends, George Harrison asked Clapton to contribute his guitar work on the track

Its awesome that Todd still uses that guitar. Such an iconic instrument need to be heard not sealed in a case. Betcha Clapton wants it back real bad now!
That guitar is a Ricky, they are great guitars.I have a 74'red ricky bass, got it for only three hundred bucks the guy didn't use it anymore and needed the money.this was the best deal i ever got.
trying to convince people about the greatness of todd is similar to the hard sell for frank zappa. probably the two most talented people in rock music who absolutely repulse people. it's like scotch, abalone, or a raw oyster. an acquired taste. brilliant!

This may have been the guitar that Clapton used on the original recording.

Check out the trapeze tailpiece on TR's Les Paul on Black Maria and compare it to this stop tailpiece version. Originals, copies, Clapton's, the Taxman?

I saw this tour at the Turning Stone casino. John Entwistle died not too long after. Very sad. Each of the four did a couple of their own songs in the first half of the show, and the second half was all Beatles. Great show.

That is Claptons SG. He must have needed money. Think about it. That has got to be the most expensive and desireable rock collectible. The guitar crossroads and spoonful were recorded with on wheels of fire. WOW

Believe me that's not the original SG that Clapton played on dude, it's a SG "YES" but not Eric's
fredrums52 4 years ago
"That Guitar" is actually a Gibson SG.
andyinwales 4 years ago
That is the Gibson SG played by Eric Clapton in Cream. Todd allegedly sold it recently.

Great footage but I would have preferred just to watch the performers without all the psychedelia.

You should speak to the people that do the video for the big screens behind the band.

This was a fabulous concert. Saw it at Wolf Trap in Virginia. Ann Wilson stole the show.

I think he sold the original "Fool SG" but had a copy made. It would have been worth a fortune so would have paid one off TR's IRS debts I guess.

Hmmm...A walk Down Abbey Road. What part of that was misunderstood?

With that mindset, please, don't ever listen to Todd's tribute to Marvin Gaye. You'll be oh, so disappointed. (while the rest of us get a chill!)

@eamonosu Clapton's solos. Clapton played lead on the track because George Harrison asked him to.
TotzthePlaid 1 year ago
@eamonosu actually, eric clapton, one of georges best friends, and still was when he passed, played all those infectious licks on the original recording of "while my guitar gently weeps."
PAULisDEADMANnumber9 1 year ago
@eamonosu I'm sure you mean Eric's solos?!
hijslijst23 1 year ago

For someone named after a type of guitar, you know nothing about the one in question.

trying to convince people about the greatness of todd is similar to the hard sell for frank zappa. probably the two most talented people in rock music who absolutely repulse people. it's like scotch, abalone, or a raw oyster. an acquired taste. brilliant!
