  • great vid, tnx

  • Thinking on this one but fruity and reason seem more professional, but listening toi your sound im not so sure.

  • @felixcock FL Studio and Reason are both very strong programs. I'm positive you can do just about anything you'd do in FL Studio in Renoise, though the workflow is quite different, as you can see. Reason is a bit of a different beast because the devices are unique to the proram, but, as a former Reason user who moved to Renoise a few years ago, I'd like to say the same thing.

  • @HigginsUltraSedative it´s virtual music

  • This helped me a lot. I'm struggling with channel interference in Renoise and I admit, I pretty much suck at drums too so thanks, I picked up a few things.

One thing, it is a bit of a murder to the ears to listen to drums in 360p, and especially if you plan to teach about EQ it helps if you up the stream quality.

  • This looks pretty similar to MilkyTracker. is it worth it for a novice to invest in something like this over something free like MilkyTracker?

  • interesting ';-)

  • I used to have Octamed on the Amiga and then on PC. I got right into that program. I use Ableton and Mascine at the moment but just not feeling Mascine right now. Gonna give this program a try me thinks

  • you have to most badass name ever

  • I don't understand how re-arranging prerecorded drums sounds and loops makes you feel like you are really making music, like it is actually something you created, this is like glorified DJing, I record actually melodies and drum beats I play with instruments, how do you apply nuance to anything? This method and it's results just seems very generic, imo.

  • @TheQuietAesthetic Actually, it is much jarder to make good sounding music using just computers since you are not playing the instruments and get into the groove so to say.. the programming takes the groove right out, so you have to really think about how to achieve certain things. And then try to not loose the original idea.

Also, using the computer makes for all kind of sounds and fx impossible to achieve any other way.

If you dont believe real music isnt made on computers, try Amon tobin.

  • @soundcrumbs I ofcourse mean : 'if you don't believe real music can be made with computers'....

In addition to listening to Amon Tobin, try Squarepusher, Wagon Christ, Cinematic Orchestra and the list is endless tbh :) enjoy!

  • @TheQuietAesthetic Been there done that. Tired of joining shitty bands and having other people tell me what fits where and what to do. Fuck that. With programs I control everything and make exactly what I want without the need of anyone else.

  • ableton is faster

  • Excellent - got cut short at the end and u were going a wee bit quick in places... but you deserve an award and it was a great video! Congrats - it helped me a lot!

  • hello ppl my name is acelcius

  • nice tutorial! thanks

  • I love Renoise. I'm not really into old-school trackers or anything like the chiptune scene, either. After a few days with this, though, I gave up on learning Ableton Live.

  • @akcoen2 Same here, tried out ableton quite often, but in the end, renoise is the most immersive way to compose, at least for me

  • Made with RENOISE 2.0 youtube.com/watch?v=L3gArLr3is0&feature=related

  • hey looks pretty interesting, maybe best use it as a plugin in cubase as some kind of pattern generator?

what about vst-compatibility? ... the eq's don't seem very precise though

  • reminds me of Octamed on the Amiga

  • @OuroGoku There can be only one Venetian Snares at any given time. To become the new one, you must find the current one and defeat him in honorable combat. I would suggest boomboxes at fifty paces.

  • How he is working that fast :o

  • @platinumdynamite Practice!

  • @TheDerpe If you can't even copy/paste a sample in the editor I'd say it's your skills that are shit, not the program. It's piss easy to do that.

  • @TheDerpe Oh dear...

  • Your beat is graet, reminds me of a Hybrid song.

If someone like to hear more music made with Renoise 2, head over to my page.

Good luck with creating epic music! :)

  • ????

  • Sorry, a question, do the synth plugins come bundled with renoise?

  • renoise yeah? reminds me of Mr H. Triton Tracker^^ where can i find this???

  • There's an annoying high-pitch sound in the background of the entire video. Not noticeable for people over 40?

  • It's a pleasure to watch this. But even as an occasional Renoise user I find it impossible to tell what keys you're pressing. It would be awesome, if you were inclined, to add comments in the video describing the keystrokes.

  • @sweepstakes Transcription - renoise.com/indepth/renoise-news/fat-beat-in-less-than-10-minutes/

  • That is some psychotic programming there dude. Good job.

  • wheres part 2? :(

  • @FischKopfD There is no part 2. But there are tons of newer tutorials on the LearnRenoise channel.

  • I miss working with Renoise.

  • derren brown?

  • Good vid!

  • This brings back some good OctaMed memories.

  • Great video, I see how fast Renoise can be when used right!

  • I love renoise

  • Jesus, you're a fast typer.

  • I just downloaded the demo of renoise and this software is so complicated its for me not possible to make a simple beat, so i rather use music maker 2 from 1995 to make autechrish aphex snares breakcore idm stuff. don´t ask me how mike paradinas and aphex work with renoise, but i´m just human and not able to do it at all.

  • @konjunktion26: What are you? On Dope? Retarded? A moron? Or all 3 combined?

  • @scumboi A moronic, doped up, retarded genius!

  • it was boring till you got to the dnb loop mixed with the set. Awesome vid

  • How are you copying and pasting like that?

  • I have the same question has casperbenson :S i can't put the notes on the columms :S can you explain me plz :\

  • Check out my renoise xrns to MOD converter...

    zenon66 . altervista . org / MyApps / applications.html

  • can u explain wut keys ur pressin

  • hey shaypah dj no-sleeves great tutorail i have a problem though when i render my track and convert into an mp3 i get a 2:50 song with no sound help with this please.

PS nothing is muted i tirple check too

  • Man, you've got it going on. I love this program! It is so full of possibilities.

  • 5 stars ;)

  • I have renoise 1.5 and I like to make fade in and fade out of an VST instrument in a track with only one pulsation.

Someone that knows how can I do?

  • Use an automation track set up to volume

  • Anybody knows how i can assign different instruments on the keys of my midi keyboard??

  • Your going to need to go into more detail than that.

  • I have already done it, but thanks for asking!

  • Your welcome!

  • looks very complicated

  • hey, ive been using renoise for a while and ive learnt a lot but i still havnt got an idea of the best vsti's, do you or anybody know what the easiest most diverse and best vstis there are? any genre, just whenever i search google i never find anything :(

  • look at omnisphere it's pricey but, looks cool to me

  • @8steaders8 Try " Massive " from Native Instruments. its a great Vsti. you can also look around in the ReFX bunch. (you will get Nexus and Vangaurd fer sure lol)

  • Can you strum the Amen break on your guitar?

    ...that's what I thought.

It's about using the appropriate tools to achieve the desired effect. And in this case it's a software sequencer.

  • A bit goa trancey, sounds good =)

  • ha ha ha ive never seen someone freak with the keyboard like that ace ive been using renoise for a wile but i still have to look at the keyboard to see what im doing this guy has skill

  • can you show me how to make typical 'keygen' music with renoise? i hope you know what i mean

  • The word you are looking for is chiptunes, or 8bit.

  • other words are demo / demo scene music

  • Excellent demo! Thanks a lot for taking the time to put this together. I've been playing with Renoise for a few days and I see I have a long way to go - but the results seem worth it! Thanks again!

  • I recently tried out this program and I've completely fallen in love.. I never want to use another DAW again, tracking is addictive! All hail to the mighty Renoise!

  • how do you actually put the notes onto the columns?!!!! help mne!!!!!!!!

  • tried pushing "esc" ?

  • push esc a red box appears around the whole thing and you just typetypetype away my friend (:

  • great stuff!!! i have the renoise trial version and im lookin forward to get the full version.....i got some catchin up to do nd you deffinately made this one look easy

  • my line is not following the track how can i make this

  • which programm did you use, to film your desktop while building a track in renoise ?

  • Cool stuff, thx & respect!

Maybe you could do a tut on how to get those fat beats going?

    * now playing : Brain Surgery * :)

  • what stlyes of music is this good for?

  • EVERYTHING!

  • @alienpelvis86 - That's a very subjective question. A lot of people use it for faster, more complex genres like drum n bass, glitch, idm, breakbeat, etc. but it's good for whatever you want, really. I think the questions you should be asking are, "Does Renoise fit in my workflow?" and "Do I like Renoise?" If Renoise works for you, regardless of genre, use it!

  • To extend on that point, I generally compose more orchestral arrangements, and while I tried notation based software like Cakewalk, I found Renoise's workflow much easier to dive into and make complex arrangements. I think the reason is, being a programmer by day, the data based layout is much easier to visualize than notation. Probably because I look at code all day, I'm guessing

  • reminds me to FastTracker

    musthave!

  • Renoise is the shiznit!!! 5/5

  • hey men good job ... what is the name of that softwere ? pls thanks :)

  • Renoise as u can read in the title

  • if u ment the synt it is ReFx Beast

  • Nice, Where can we find the samples?

  • Heh, this reminds me of the Amiga Soundtracker/Protracker days back in 1989-1997. Exactly how I worked for years...but glad I moved onto a full blown midi studio with physical instruments later.

  • >but glad I moved onto a full blown midi studio with physical instruments later.

some of the most brilliant minds in electronica are using Renoise.

  • what's a "midi studio" lol

  • It is physical instruments coupled to a software sequencer on the computer, heh, but anybody knows that.

  • Nice tut

  • Dang, so pro.

  • looks very good tutorial, thanks

  • Nice tutorial but for better workflow, I think you should turn pattern follow off.

  • all that in a 10 min tutorial. Well done. Miss part 2 though!

  • I found theres a text explanation to go with this vid on the renoise site, under help->tutorials->beginners vids->fat beat in 10 mins.

  • I'm been tooling around with this for a week now and after watching you do it, I want to come to your house and beat you over your head with your keyboard (<;

  • How do you add sounds to the track, what buttons is he pressing in this case?

  • Great !!!

but .. you move too faaaast :D

    Good Work !!

  • thnx :D

  • ok i have only just found this software, and i can't even figure out how to get a note onto the main screen..any help? Lol

  • hit esc to toggle note entry mode...took me awhile too...

  • you need to scour the renoise website. there are loads of useful pages there. Ive had renoise for a day and i can already make a simple drum beat. This video has helped me immensely which is really cool. Go to the website

  • sorry for the gash question but can someone tell me how to make a note turn off in the pattern editor? otherwise im running back to logic and reason lol

  • try with Caps Lock in edit mode ..

  • @shaypah Alt + Caps lock , Caps lock and Shift + caps lock

  • Brothers in bars - Epic

    Search.

  • I would say that Renoise is too complex for beginners. You should use either Modplug or Psycle for starting out. Once you are comfortable with those and with tracking in general, try out Renoise. Mind you, those other trackers are pretty powerful too. Modplug is especially good for starting out because you get to use the windows sound samples which are usually installed on Windows by default.

  • whats a tracker?

  • Hello boys,

i got one suggestion on the INSTRUMENT EDITOR.

the resolution on the 2 ENVOLOPES, it might be slightly intenser.

cause if you try cut off very short on the pitch for example of it, you can hear the resolution on it.

i hope this information will help Renoise better

  • what is that paste of snaredrum that you do on the keyboard, can you tell me what the name of the shortcut is?

  • man, calm down, do it a bit slower. your brain must ran on 400bpm or what? ;)

we know youre fast, but a bit too fast...

slower speed at typing and no one will be hurt

    keep on tracking!

  • hey! this looks really nice! can the built in sampler import all the bigger sampler formats like giga studio halion sound fonts etc.? if that's the case then this is probably exactly what i'm looking for! :D runs on linux as well. very nice video btw!

  • is your name celcius like in celcius & farenheit? :) if so, cool.

anyway, nice video & groove. definetly going to check out this sequencer and maybe someday get your lightning speed workflow ;)

  • i'm interested in this software.. freeware even!

  • No not freeware. The free version has ASIO and export to .wav file disabled but everything else is functional. You also don't get access to the Betas unless you are a paid up member (and v2.0 Beta has just been released!)

At just 50Euro it's stupidly cheap as well!

  • lol, and to think I was using Modplug.

  • interesting vid. ive finally cracked into renoise after months of delaying cz it looks too intimidating, however the basics are alot simpler than i thought!

just one thing though, you say its important to eq properly- you should be attenuating freqs in software, not boosting them!

  • i downloaded renoise for free. or am i just not understanding this conversation :s

  • fuck how do you work so fast in renoise!? I am so slow compared to you lol.

  • I know. I feel so stupid now.

  • renoise and reason have different structure and functions, renoise is perfect for destroying sampled beats in a aphex twin/squarepusher/venetiansnares style, that is much more diffcult with dr.rex in reason.reason on the other hand is much better for all the melodic parts

  • See, I dab with drum'n'bass where I'm constantly playing with beats and basslines. For me, trackers have always been better at this. Just the way I do things. I'm not pushing Renoise on anyone.

  • You are entitled to your opinion.

  • Midi keyboard with a tracker? Lols.

  • now i have Renoise, but i want more tones, how do i get more drums and stuff?

  • you can either download VST instruments, if you want synthetic drums, or get some drum samples.

there are various free source for either of the two on the net, just search for "drum samples" or whatever kind of sample you're looking for with your favourite internet search engine.

  • where can i get Renoise?

  • how do you get the note from the top right corner to the track part 1 thing.... its so annoying i have been fiddling with it for hours and i could make beats if i could get any of the instruments to the play list to hear it and format it from their... gah so frustrating

  • are there any programs which do quite the same, but than a lot easier (and for free)?

I guess it would take me days before I can work with this one...

  • Imagine having to spend DAYS to learn music ;)

  • @shaypah or even years

  • MilkyTracker will be what you're after in that it's free, although it's still going to take days (hah!) to learn.

  • true! ive been using it for a while but damn, im still struggeling with it

  • how/where do you get the plugin he used for the bass?

  • I like the clattery keyboard

  • clattery keyboard is clattery.

  • Dang, great vid, but i still can't find a guide that will tell me HOW to got the notes on to the timeline

  • I just installed it and I can't figure it out either

  • Never mind, got it. For any other noobs like me, to save you frustration If you're using a normal qwerty keyboard you press "Z" to insert the sample that you highlighted at the top right. That puts it in the pattern editor at it's original pitch. It should say C-401. Other letters on on the keyboard are higher and lower frequencies of the sample.

I guess it's a lot easier with a proper music keyboard hooked up.

Good video, I'll probably need it when I figure out what I'm doing.

  • Make sure the focus is on the 'pattern editor' window and press record then use the bottom and top row of keys on your keyboard.

  • Is your name really celsius??

Thanks for this vid m8. Very helpful. Been thinking of buying re noise for some time but keep on with mad tracker as its free(ish)

  • v nice vid man :] just got teh ownload for my mac from teh site :D

works like a dream straight off

&& all thanks to this vid lulz

    ty

    (Y)

  • cool i will buy it just been to there site and its quite cheep i just thought it would be expencive like all the other sequencers thats all and there in the hundreds

  • You should definitely buy it 'cause :

    1. It REALLY worths it (Renoise 1.9 is AWESOME)

    2. People who made this piece of software usually come from the Amiga computer, who died because of piracy...

    3. It's cheap !

    THEY NEED OUR SUPPORT

  • "It's important to eq it properly"...

So why are you boosting the eq? Subtractive eq in software my man!! :)

  • I also would appreciate to see part 2...

How do you "sync" the Breakbeat so fast ?

  • Instrument Settings -> Sample Properties -> Sync (# of lines)

That automatically adjusts the playback speed of the sample so it always lasts that number of lines.

  • damn u fast

  • WHERE'S PART 2?!?!?! .... I want to hear the finished product :( .... you have an excellent ear for beat btw dude.

  • no way chemical brothers use reason ..they ot a shitload full of hardware ear ...don't believe the so called publicity stunts

Except for renoise ..which rules ( aaron funk said so :)

  • How do you turn the notes off?

  • Press Caps Lock while in record mode.

  • Yeah I found it out just after i wrote it, damn :D

    ty anyways :)

  • sounds like chemical brothers

  • Nice! How long have you been using renoise and how long have you been doing music?

  • Great tutorial! I've been using trackers for years and Renoise is by far the best tracker at the moment. Dont understand all the limited FL Studio and Reason stuff... but respects to all musicians and their wares.

  • Ha, I used Buzz for a few years. Now I use Reason, I might have to go back to trackers.

  • is renoise based wholly on sampling?

  • Not entirely. You can use VST's as well.

  • It also allows midi. Infact you can have midi/sampled instrument/VSTs all on one track

  • That's true - in fact, that's what I have done many times. There are some great VSTi's out there, and when having such wonderful MIDI device as HardSID, and when samples are always handy for drums etc, it's only natural to use them all simultaneously. Renoise rocks!

  • Well nice try making a tutorial...

I have no idea what the hell you just did.

  • this is very helpful for people who have a moderate understanding of trackers and need an introduction into throwing down beats. A+

  • I guess...because I didn't understand really a thing he did.

I use Reason and FL Studio. Maybe that's my problem.
