I believe that what counts is what comes out of the instrument (technique or no technique)! It is like a musician that reads charts vs another that doesn't read but can still play!!! When you hear a recording, what counts is what comes out and not techniques, and how you look, etc.
Takes a lot of courage to expose yourself as a new instrument apprentice. I salute you as I admire your bass playing technique and I'm sure that your detractors will soon "that their hats" for you too. Keep up and thanks a lot for all your precious lessons!!
Stanley Clarke plays the electric with the finger position of a stand up bass ... he's doing it wrong! What a noob Stanley is. :P It sounds nice regardless of your fingering (she said). Also, one thing is perfect ... that jazz hat! :)
nice playing... i find Ray Brown's bass method is the best for physical playing of the double bass... and the bow...! el arco...! where one sweats and curses...
OK, while the video was playing, I was reading the comments - and NOT looking at your technique. And it actually sounds very good for a beginner and that's what matters!! Who cares if your technique is "unique"...
I've played the violin and the double-bass in the past... Those instruments need real love and care and time. It's great you're posting your progress as you go! I hope to see some gigs soon! :D
i love how there seems to be a que off assholes shooting this guy down.... when it's most obviously because his bass guitar playing is amazing and flawless.... so because he has introduced his learning progress on another instrument to the world the jealous bass players feel they can finally criticize this dude... when clearly... he knows damn fine what he is doing and excels at anything he attempts ;)
@mrbassman25 I agree. DK offers many good things, especially on the electric that are very useful for anyone interested in contemporary bass styles and performance. An arranger can learn more about the instrument just by watching and listening. Of course, he would want to shed on technique for his acoustic playing if he wants to master that.
Great playing dude, be careful of bending your left wrist too much on the lower notes. If it feels strained try raising your left arm a little and adjusting your thumb to point towards the head. Cheers!
Righthand picking/plucking/pulling is a mixed bag of variations depending what kind of sound the player is after, and what's most convenient way for him to play!
you're not faking it you fake faker! next time really fake it! lol. I thought you were going to do that trick where if you get lost in the chart just play chromatically til you find your place. I used to do that at Berklee, no one notices, they just think you're being "out". shh.
I had never understood why some people are so critical about "technique" Sometimes so over rated! His tone is great... timing is great! Jimi Hendrix didnt have the best "technique" But he just turned out to be the best guitar player to ever live! This awesome!
i guess what they mean is, you can probably get the index finger on your right hand to be more parallel to the string, so that way you can pull the string with the side of your finger, and really try going for the knuckle. look for any Charles Mingus videos and you'll get the idea.
BTW, very inspiring to see you working on the upright. You are going to be totally awesome very quickly! Right on!
I don't mean to be offensive, but your picking technique is not correct...
You should not use the tip of your finger like you would on an electric bass, you should use the side of your finger like the guy in the video. Nice hat btw. ;-)
@MarloweDK Once you get it down right, you'll find out that it delivers a much louder, bigger and more defined sound. ;-) I'm currently working on my left hand technique, which is pretty bad at the moment. Thanks for playing Maiden Voyage by the way, I almost forgot what an amazing tune it was!
@MarloweDK Hi Marlow. Meaca is incorrect. You can use any fingering techniques that fit according to the situation. Playing with your finger parallel to the bass is ok in slow tempo's where one finger on your hand can handle it but when the tempo gets fierce or you have to solo or play complicated things 2 fingers is absolutely fine if not necessary.
Carefull now m8. The copyrightbastards are probably gonna want to close down ur great profile again. God i loved ur playalongs. Anywhere they can still be enjoyed?
really nice, you're doing a hard job for the others, i'll really like it, i can't give you anithing, but if you come some day to mallorca i'll be glad to invite you to my home for a hollydays
HEY MARLOWE! your great dude, I continue to learn from you. no flash and straight to the point! Can I move in with you for about 6 months? I don't eat much and I promise not to blow any of your amps. We can be like "batman and robin" the dynamic duo! marlowe and doogie the BASS crusaders!
@mrnmrc This bass actually needs a setup - the fingerboard needs to be straightened , it needs bridge adjustment and new strings too... I want to have a low action without buzz - right now it buzzes in the wrong places
dude, you're an excellent player but watch your pitch on the fret-less bass...... you were a little off pitch here and there. Your hand positions need to be perfect when playing fret-less. But I liked this video..... it made me feel all cozy like when I eat chocolate.
You're a joy to watch--you enjoy playing and learning, and after only two weeks on the upright you could gig with it if you wanted. I realize we all seek perfection in our playing, but the reality is you have enough chops to take it outside today if you wanted. Thanks for the motivation, and for what you do for this world bass community!
Ever tried any different picking hand (or pizzicato) techniques? I recomend getting into them, they'll give you a louder and bolder sound, especially in jazz.
just kidding, i just love your basses so much. i will buy more basses and add videos to tell their story, oh you have a video talking about your basses?
i mean, i know, i'm a bass player and i rather see and hear someone playing other than talking about "Yes this bass...blah blah blah.." but i'll like to know the histroy of your basses, just curious.
It's great seeing such a great teacher in a learning position. Whether this is just for your own kicks or whatever, you're probably going to come out of this an even better teacher than before.
You're getting much better, but be careful with your left hand technique. You're dropping your elbow a bit low which is causing your wrist to bend. You might want to check the height of your upright too, the end of your neck should be about the same height as your knuckels when your right arm is straight down. Keep up the good work =)
Very good sound... what is your pickup? Underwood?
I think you just need to work on the right hand, 'cause you're playing like eletric bass. Take a look on Ray Brown and Christian Mcbride videos and see how they play with the right hand. I think if your work on it your sound gonna be much 'bigger' than the actual sound.
@luccabf The pickup consists of 2 magnets mounted directly on the bridge under E and G string, there is no brand name , it looks very simple.. Ill work on my right hand attack of course, right now the left is giving enough trouble:-)
I would love a two part series where you explain the thought process behind walking bass. I have played sens middle of 2006 and i can't walk for my life :P
I'm a Larry Graham style player mixed with some Paul Jackson, but I'm a Herbie Hancock, Lee Morgan, John Coltrane listener. Would be nice to be able to swing some walking along with some cool Lee Morgan track from the album Sidewinder!
Some great moves in there, particularly at about 2:00-2:06. You used similar chops after that, but that was a nice touch. Mind you, I WAS looking out for a blistering, Christian McBride-type solo, but hey, the comping was dead cool, anyway, despite the odd understandable hitch; I also like the expressions that went with a couple of them.
love the sound of that upright! Such a raw sound, especially for rockabilly slap too, I'd love to see some rockabilly/psychobilly slap and such, keep up the good work, from one bassist to another, rock on!
