I also had a egg bound bird Ruby and im a newbie bird breeder. Me and me sis managed to push out that egg and it was whole except it was...squishy. THANK YOU! If it hadnt been for u our Ruby would have been dead. Her mate Amazon is feeding her and my sis is shouting the results of our 'surgery' to Mom. THANKS AGAIN
@demzlovatofan1 I'm sure it was not comfortable for her. Almost like a woman having a child. Thankfully we were able to save her without her passing away. She is doing just wonderful now!
This is why I want a male. Then I don't have to worry about health problems that can come from a hen like becoming egg bound and calcium deficiencies. Maybe when I have more experience with birds I'll get a female.
@picatsoforfma This was actually an isolated incident that happened with this female. Rarely have we ever had this happen. Even with proper diet, cuttlebone, and liquid calcium, it can occur, but as I mentioned, it is rare that this should ever happen. She is now retired and living her life happily ever after in a huge flight aviary with all of our other retirees. :) Don't let this deter you from getting a little girl. They make excellent pets too! :)
i noticed my bird had an egg in her 4 days ago! she doesnt seem to be in any distress and is moving around and eating well! how long should the be in her for?
I don't have experience with female parrots and eggs. How do you know if your bird is egg-bound or not? I recently adopted a 3-yr old African Grey and I am worried that one day she will have this condition and I won't realize it. Also, if you had left the bird alone, would she have passed the egg on her own?
I hope you don't mind my questions as I am just trying to learn. Thank you in advance.
my peach faced female lovebird died 2 days ago from being egg bound and im REALLY saddened by it. but she doesnt have a male so the eggs she lays dont hatch. i noticed she was bleeding slightly out of her track, but i decided shes probably just trying to pass the egg. anyway, should i have tried this finger technique on her cause i feel so guilty that i didnt help her try to pass it.
OMG. That looks really painful. Good thing you're experience and was able to save her. I have a female lovebird and she's a chronic egg layer. I hope mine never goes through this. Thanks for sharing!
how long until u know that the parrotlet is egg bound?
...its been a little over a week....my parrotlet laid one egg and i know she had atleast one more in her...but its taking forever for her to lay...im getting worried
Your parrotlet should have laid the egg by now. Most parrotlets lay every to every other day. Take her to the vet if you are unsure. Better to be safe than sorry!
She is no longer breeding and retired. She now plays happily every day in her personal biride condo. She is hanging upside down showing off. She loves scrithces. She was a hand fed baby then placed into our breeding program.
Why would this happen to her? I don't know anything about breeding birds. I have a male parakeet and this is the reason I was afraid to get a female. I don't know how common a problem egg binding is. I know poor diets can contribute to the problem, but it's obviously possible for a bird to become egg bound even with the best care like what you do for your birds.
Egg binding can occur if an egg is malformed and/or too large. She is doing SUPER and is retired from the breeding program living in a open flight aviary. I have had Parrotlets for over 2 decades and this isn't that common for us.
Hello she is a Pacific Parrotlet and she has produced babies in the past. However this breeding season she attempted to breed again and she became egg bound. She is doing wonderful now and is retired from our breeding program. We have a special place in our home for retired breeders and are very well taken cared of. We also raise Green Rumped Parrotlets. We are located in Florida and a legal license breeder. Our Parrotlets aren't just parrots to us their a special part of our lives.
Wow! That's an amazing video. I've never seen one on here like that before. It's wonderful you were able to save her! I will be checking back & will subscribe to your videos to see if you post an update on her.
She is doing just wonderful as if nothing ever happened. In fact she is back with her mate. Not helping her remove the egg using the methods that you viewed would have been fatal to leave the egg. I will post an update in two weeks.
crazy but wonderful that you were able to do that

I just lost my cockatiel recently to this condition. It happened so suddenly. The funny thing is she showed no sign of getting ready to lay an egg.

Glad to hear she is doing well! That looked painful. We have 2 male pacific parrotlets in our family. They are fun to watch.

She's such a little trooper. God Bless her. Wow! Video is amazing. It looks as if that was difficult and painful to go through for her. Poor Baby.
Happy she's doing better now.
Give us an update please.

when do the eggs hatch when 1 egg hatches?
i have 4 eggs right now and the mother is sitting on it
1 hatched 2 days ago

They will hatch every other day. Sometimes day afer day but rare. I wouldn't disturb her while she is in the box not at least for a couple weeks.

I was wondering:
Was this the first egg she's produced? What type of parrotlet is she?
What state are you in?
