and another "also," thanks so much Asymmatrix for uploading this. I have the compilation versions which are all studio. I suspect Miles meant this to be live and raw; this is the only real version.
@LeonSpinx1 Agreed Marsalis is a pompous bore. Still listening to Tribute to JJ 42 years later. One of the greatest albums ever made imo. I'm sure Marsalis hates it.
@Asymmatrix I removed that comment about Marsalis because it was impertinent, and I felt like I'd be offending people who didn't know this and liked him.
The era from In a Silent Way to JJ is truly incomparable. I could listen to the Rolling Stones for a month, the Beatles for two months, Dylan for a year, Miles for a lifetime.
@musicpropeller anyone who brings you to Miles must be praised. For me, believe me or not, was David Bowie. And I've never came back...poor David... But thanks Mr. Bowie.
Miles rocks and the world rolls on! Miles Davis in rare form here and Stern is out of this world. Stick it in your ear, Wynton Marsalis, Marsalis the Lame, the Pathetic! Miles kicks your ass here again, punk Marsalis. Miles!
@chefacec1 I become vitriolic when people say this. Miles picked Stern up from nowhere (a back up guitar for Blood Sweat and Tears and Billy Cobham's band) and made his career. This is Miles' song. You may prefer Stern's version and like Stern's solo, but it's Miles' composition and arrangement; there's only one genius at work here.
My Uncle Mike was the coolest cat I knew (murdered in '89.) He used to play this song all the time. I couldn't remember the name of the tune, only that it was French. I just rediscovered it today. Hearing it now makes me want to cry, but dang it's excellent.
I saw Miles play this on SNL on the TV when I was a kid. I didn't know who he was--just some freaky black dude shuffling around with a red trumpet, blowing his hypnotic melodies. This tune was stuck in my head on and off for about 20yrs, until I found We Want Miles some years ago. This is a good album, but I think Tribute to J J is my favorite.
have looked for this version for a while..so pleased to hear it. Awesome. And , if you're a guitar fan, contains one of my favourite solos ever (3:54), and perhaps the greatest power chord of all time? (9:05)
@Asymmatrix this is the original version I heard all those years ago.....and didnt Miles record some killer versions later on....Marcus Miller too...thanx Asymmatrix
@Asymmatrix In 1980 I was listening to KKGO L.A. and they played Fat Time from Man With The Horn. When Stern kicked in I found my calling as a guitarist. That solo and this one still sends whiskey shivers down my spine!
Marcus Miller was like 23 during this....

DukeVian 2 months ago
@DukeVian No.
Asymmatrix 2 months ago 4
@DukeVian It's because of his I think girlfriend's son or something like that
Racibac 1 month ago
@DukeVian Jean Pierre was the name of Frances Taylor's son (a son she had from a former wedding).

@echo680 Agree about the guitar solo, was the first time I'd heard Mike Stern years ago and is pretty much the reason I posted it. Glad you dig it.
