You never know what gems are in people's back catalogue! I don't know how I missed this but I am still covered in goosebumps. The atmosphere is tremendous, the presence of spirits and subtle use of effects, the wormhole was beautifully created. All in all a well crafted combination of organised and spontaneous filming and narration. So glad I found this.
Better & better & just when you thought they couldn't get any better...Weird...I just watched an old British sci-fi flick with locust-like martians...
Man you are such a master at getting an eerie vibe without it being a cliche. Wow Olive's brain works overtime...this brought back memories of all my scary thoughts as a child. Now I get to experience it from the parents perspective through you. Creepy , profound and pure. Excellent!
Caren..This is one brilliant video you came up with! The whole concept blows me away! You're one imaginative lady with a whole lot of talent!! I totally dig what you did with this!! One HUGE kudos to you!! :) M~
creepy is right :) The coyotes and the upshot from the wormhole are my favorites. I can't help thinking that Olive is lucky to have you documenting her at all stages. She will either love that or hate it when she is a few years older, but I'd bet she will love it.
What a trip !! Make a feature film darnit !! This reminds me a little of Atom Egoyan's stuff , (Who I love !!) . Can't pin it down to what exactly. Loved the adress book. Great music too. Really nocked me out. Thumbing uping.
The answers come from our heads....kids are amazingly connected to the in here or out there....and than as we grow we are for some reason slowly disconnected....until one day when we realize that the connection is almost gone.....and than some of us spend the rest of our life's reconnecting with this connection....to have the faith of children once again....to just know...without explaining how.....just allowing these answers that are inside to be without questioning.....enough rambling....
You are the master in the subtleties of scary, which can have a more profound affect on the psyche than the blatant blood & gore. My hat's off to you once again, Caren, that was fantastic! The imaginary was ghostly, along with the innocent voice of Olive pondering death, it sends shivers down the spine.
I swear, you make the creepiest videos in a way that I'd never even think. You have a bit of David Lynch about your work, which believe me, is a compliment.
I watched this twice and will need to watch it again! So much good stuff. I love the backward walking cricket (grasshopper? What IS the difference?) and I love the young thinker. Wow!
The images, the camera motion, the wonderfully paced, thoughtful, trick my mind editing. The music seems perfect when I really pay attention to it. Otherwise, it's the wallpaper in a nightmare.
Gently creepy. Found myself responding to "everything dies even if they're little". There's a moment in a "Sandman" comic when a little boy asks Death why he only got to live til he was 6, & Death replies, "You got what everybody gets- a lifetime." The scene at the end- "Sometimes they bring in the rat & the wolf, & sometimes the worm.". "Crowd of Drifters" by Magnetic Fields. Like all good movies- got into it. And it took me for a ride to unexpected places...
Presented like a delicious dark dessert. very nice insight into the life here, and the life after, over there. Both are necessary and perhaps both exist right now. Loved Olives clear way of communicating the simplest thought, that means so much!
Enjoyed this very much! It's all so good that we all die! Every day we die! Out of the mouths of babes comes the ultimate wisdom! Another masterwork of sounds and visions to play on our emotions and make them run from the morbid and macabre to the excitingly fantastic! Great job as always! Pops
Geesh! I'd love to see a behind the scenes on this... for your thoughts and the chance to see Olive performing that amazing monologue . Not sure I saw everything even the fourth time but I know I felt what you wanted me to feel. The sped up pan on "did you see something..." works so well. Dogs and children reacting to what we can't see, it almost felt like the first and last shots were a ghost's pov?
Awesome work, Caren. I enjoyed every second and I'll be back for more.
really great photography. you have a great eye, (some say you have two. hehe.) seriously you have a great eye for staging shots. i like this beau-coup.
Just wondering if you do this on a professional level. With a back ground in short films. You are very talented : ) Lots going on in them there hills. Well done
I couldn't possibly comment about Olive, anything that hasn't already tugged on your heart like wild horses. The child slays me.
Then, there's your work...always digging in the shadowy gardens of some looming emotion I didn't know loomed, in the deepest darkest depths of my own deep darkness. This stuff gets under my skin. Has me marveling at life, and embracing thoughts of the inevitable. "Every day, we die"....the matter of fact, fearless words will echo in my mind, probably forever.
My son Robin (age 5) told me last week he never wants to get an operation again. He had tonsillectomy last year and tubes placed in his ears. That mask they put on your face steals your good thoughts. He pointed at his head and told me he now has a hole there.
The feeling he gave me by telling me this is the same I get from this video. Not sure if saying I like this would be the right way. Impressive it is for sure.
That was disturbing. I was wondering if Olive was talking about stuff you scripted or really her thoughts 2:32ish. I like the rabbit/snake hole effect.
This is definitely a video that should be watched more than once. I didn't notice the ghostly figure in some of the shots the first time I watched the video.
You've made a mini masterpiece here; it was kind of like the t.v. show "American Gothic" crossed with "Twin Peaks."
@DickensianDreams - thank you for pointing out that there is some pretty subtle stuff going on. Ghostly business seems like it should always be, did I see that? Thank you for the awesome comment! :)

I think you should change your name to Caren Macabre. Love what you wrote- that it's a poem. Feels like a poem without the words and paper.

Got all giddy to see another Caren vid in my inbox!!
Love so much about it.
-Love how you made the top of the hole look like it was from INSIDE the hole (and I understand what you had to go through to get that to look real)!
-Love how you made it seem like the grasshopper was taken aback.
-LOVE Olive's monologue.
-Love what you had to go through to get the whole rocker scene. Looks great.
-Love your masking work.
Another great job! Very moving and intense!
