Not to shatter the dream, but apparently the birds took out one engine, and then when he tried to turn off the destroyed engine, he accidentally turned off the second one and thought they had both gone out. It happens ALL THE TIME when they are training on flight simulators. There is very little chance that the birds took out both engines. Regaurdless he as excellent skills as he was able to land safely with no running engines.

Most people know very litle about aircraft, so they see a large plane make a safe belly landing on a river and go "wow, it's a miracle!" They don't realize that the plane is actually designed to glide on zero power and built to reasonably withstand such a landing, on land or water. The statue is a bit over the top but what Sully did was kick ass. I don't care what anyone says, but crash landing a full commercial airline with 2 malfunctioning engines without any casualties is damn impressive. The pilot deserves the praise, but US Airways is in for a world of hurt now that it is coming out that the plane had the same issue two days before and the pilot restarted the engine and kept going to Charlotte, NC.

I Agree with Cenk around 85% of the time.
On this story.. the angle/appraoch he took.. totally wrong imo. I Fully agree and dislike the whole over the top, over played goofy 'American Hero' machine thing because it looks so manufactured and generic to me. However.. If there is ever a time to apply such adulation to someone.. Of COoouurrssee this is it! If u save all those lives u absolutely deserve the heroic spin cycle.. without the sarcasm I feel.

Come on! God... I know we make a big deal that the guy is a hero but hey, this guy has good knowledge and experience. HE is the one responsible for the good landing, HE was the one controling the plan. I am responsable of my actions and consequences. We all do stuff good or bad, there might be good or bad consequences but woah! Don't accord this to God, come on now... This guy knew what he was doing! God (or Satan) is just an excuse or justification for whatever happens, that's retarted.

My point was that I find it rather hypocritical that religious people cherry pick all fun happy events as being the hand of God, whilst blaming anything horrific on numerous other causes.

how is this video cynical? yeah he did saved passengers' lives but what other options were there for him considering he's also in the plane with them and he happens to be the pilot whose job is to fly and land the plane safely...is he a hero? of course he is, but the way people have responded to the incident is just way too much..i don't see firefighters who escorted and helped people out of a burning and collapsing skyscraper being rewarded with $10,000

Most people know very litle about aircraft, so they see a large plane make a safe belly landing on a river and go "wow, it's a miracle!" They don't realize that the plane is actually designed to glide on zero power and built to reasonably withstand such a landing, on land or water. The fact that everyone made it out is great news in these times, but "Sully" is not a national hero, just a capable pilot and an admirable captain. Back to work folks.

The statue is a bit over the top but what Sully did was kick ass. I don't care what anyone says, but crash landing a full commercial airline with 2 malfunctioning engines without any casualties is damn impressive. That said, the media is milking it for what its worth and its turning an incredible thing into an extremely annoying mess. Thanks media we're gonna be tired of this guy before he get's to talk to the public.

I'm more pissed people are calling it a "miracle from god". Wouldn't it have been a "miracle" if the plane hadn't fallen out of the sky in the first place? Couldn't God redirect some fuckin' birds to go shit over some bridge instead of bringing down planes? Billion to one chance. Miracle? Those people were just hella unlucky. Maybe God even wanted to fuck them up but, alas, the devil intervened.

There is nothing miraculous about a plane just flying. The miracle is in the crash and the survival of all those involved. It is pretty intense to think that fucking thing didn't split in half. Shows that flight crew was on the ball, and that plane was made well. Miracle? Hero? Hummm, statue? Absolutely not, statue lol!
