LOL I thought I was the only one who'd thought of this, I shoulda known better. I think it's a great basic set for teams that don't have a lot of size but do have pretty good speed, especially when you face teams that run a lot of option, spread option or pistol type offenses. However I've always drawn it up with a T-N-T front, three big down linemen covering up the center and both guards, the intent being to clog up the middle and take that completely away.
the team I am coaching is doing well with this scheme we are 3-0 and only gave up 8 ponts in those three games, we have forced 9 turnovers over those three games and have scored 6 touchdowns on defense as well.
The answer is yes. This D works well against the run or the pass. It is really a disguise and confusion Defense and makes it difficult on QBs to read and Lineman to scheme against. This is a fantastic fit for teams with limited beef to put on the line and can compensate with tremendous LB athletes.
@lilgreg0428 - Personally, I think it's best against the run in the sense that you can create more confusion against a run-based attack. You attack from so many different angles so many different ways during a game, they won't know what to expect, which is pretty much a "no duh" statement, but a true one. :) Although it may not look strong against a DW, it's all about how well the LBs respond and if they can prevent the big plays. Prevent those, and you have a chance.
Love this defense. I used this defense a little, really did not have a system, now I have studied, and overstand what this defense is wanting to do. Love man just love it.

The 3-3-5 works great only if you have great players- just like any other defense. The 4-3 is a lot easier for kids to do...
