@PeaceNdLovee I am 22 and rocking out to this song while writing a character bio for a little known Tennessee Williams play called Vieux Carre... and I AM HIP!
years ago a friend gave me this album in Oxford. still love every track, especially Shape of Things. I can't play The Shadow of your Smile because I remember the shadow of his smile. hey-ho let's listen anyway what d'ye say?
This was one of Blossom's favorite recordings, she spend 10 seasons are Ronnie Scott's and then returned every few years after the early 70s. Her studio version on "From The Meticulous to the Sublime" is swinging too, but not like this!
Love Blossom! I can thank "School House Rock" for beginning my love of Blossom Dearie. What "art" will kids nowadays come to appreciate from their "educational" television?
Just change a couple of lyrics right? Maybe something like "I read Pitchfork Media" (instead of Playboy Magazine) or "Sufjan Stevens knows my friend."
Until this week (when I discovered the wonderful work of Blossom Dearie) I only knew this song from Bette Midlers Bathhouse Betty album. It was always one of my favourite tracks on that cd. I had no idea it was a cover version. I absolutely love Blossom Dearie doing this song!! Cant get enough of it.
WOW. Never heard of her before. Song of the year 43 years later. Just heard Nellie Mckay name drop her on her "The In Crowd" video here on YouTube. Must hear.
I didn't find out until this week that Blossom died this past February. I have several of her Daffodil albums and was lucky enough to see her several times in the 70's in Manhattan. I remember seeing her sing "Peel Me A Grape" and "Winchester In Apple Blossom Time." What a wonderful woman.
I just found out she's no longer alive, I had recently heard an interview of her on NPR so I thought she was still alive. How John Travolta's son's death got so much more attention than the passing of legends like Blossom or Eartha Kitt I'll never know.
As soon as she started singing, I knew Bob Dorough was behind this tune. Similar cadence to "Just about Everything". How fun to hear the voice of "Figure of Eight" (another Dorough tune) singing about reading Playboy. lol I'm sad to hear she's passed.

@Bluehawk2008 @Bluehawk2008 , why sadly?
Bette Midler did a great cover of this song in the '90s, and she did change the lyrics.
Bobby Darin became Sammy Davis....
I like Recordchanger's idea of evolving lyrics.

This is truly a classic. Captures the mood of the "Beat" 1950's perfectly. Before all that hippie bullshit came along.
