I used a program that allows me to map keyboard keys to MIDI notes to make my computer keyboard one of these. I use it to be able to play music without carrying a real musical keyboard of some sort with me, it's awesome.
I've gone from a traditional keyboard layout to a janko system like this one and this is far cooler. I just wish I could afford to purchase one a chromatone. Rubenstein felt this was a superior system. ...maybe one day...
i want to buy one! if anoyone has any clue how to get hold of one please repy to this post or message my profile! :D (i've seen their homepage but it seems to be dead)
I'd get lost on an keyboard like that... that's why I like normal keyboards with black and white keys... you always know what note you're going to play... this is really cool though
I have always wanted to play piano, but I hated stretching my fingers so far. This instrument, with its smaller buttons and convenient arrangement of keys would be perfect for me.
So... seeing as button accordions already OWN piano accordions in their capabilities, and if this thing's come out... is there any reason for people to keep learning the traditional piano keyboard? I'm not biased--I play piano accordion--I'm just asking.
Thing is, who's going to teach this? I think few piano teachers would care to relearn how to play the keyboard, even if it is a superior layout. By the way, the Chromatone's only available in Japan, but there are plans to bring the design to the States. See daskin.*com (w/o the star)
Of course ease of transposing, it like a guitar sort of, for sure it is a matrix which is superior to the wacko nature of piano. The keyboard operates horizontally, has no automatic functions. The guitar has many automatic functions once you memorize a shape you just move it horizontally to transpose. Old school key board is not like that at all. Piano is now obsolite except except as social context.
I guess that's true - it would be easier to transpose. Of course, the standard piano keyboard is such a standard that it will be hard for this thing to catch on. Some teachers (not me) may argue that having people start out with a "C" favoring setup will familiarize them to the major scale easier, and transposing is a necessary discipline.
scales look the same no matter where they start. chords do have the same form no matter what base note it has. transposing is dead simple. like on the guitar although the guitar isn't as easy as on this keyboard. and you will have a better reach.
Franz Liszt said "This invention will have replaced the present piano keyboard in fifty years' time!" (about the janko keyboard) too bad he was wrong in this prediction. standards are hard to break with. espcially for expensive instruments like pianos
For guitar players it much easier, the piano is like one big string that you can pluck multiple times it very confusing, this thing is like short diagonal strings tuned in 2nds, I checked out tuning on internet, it way cool but overly priced 2k for cheap model on ebay, 1500 + 400 shipping, that pretty high for cheap synth I already know music theory i just can't get used to piano, solo guitar has it limitations unless your lenny breau

Looks like the same 88 keys on a piano, just stylized to look like a typing keyboard.
Very cool.
