@mypalrocco Yeah, those are not unlike my sentiments. I took the test drive before I bought it, and thought, "This is awesome! I have to get it!". I'm actually getting rid of it soon, though in favor of a better-built, better looking and more pawerful Geo Tracker that I'm putting together. a 13hp car? good crap works better than i would have thought. those little yanmars have alot of torque. i have a 1982 john deere compact tractor with a 2T80 yanmar engine rated at 16hp, it sure has alot of useable power for being so small
Thats is inspiring. While we are on the subject of high mpg Let me tell you all about when I got divorced in 93' I drove my 91 Geo Metro 1.0 litre 3 cyl 5 spd from Illinois to Massachusetts. At one part of the trip I drove 40 mph on the highway just feathering the throttle for 4 hours and got 60 MPG. Traffic was lite.
Most of our milege is too much speed and driving habits.
I miss that car! It would chirp 2nd gear too! ;) Think I'll check out ebay ;)
Very nice job! Flat lands are ideal for the little grocery getter. I put a Kubota 3 cylinder in a Geo Metro and it would do 65mph foot to the floor (for a long time) on flat land but it was pretty gutless. The biggest problem is that California will not allow diesel conversions and will not license it.
@kimmer6 i gotta try this. hell i can pick cars up like these. running for a song. pull hte engine out do a swap. wonder how well it would pull a hill?
@yamahonkawazuki Better for flat lands and just around town. My Kubota powered Metro is so underpowered at 24hp that it would be dangerous on the freeway.
use bio diesel and you wont have to pay for diesel anymore. just go to mcdonalds and grab all their old cooking oil, drain the fat out of it and there you go.
@asayle3r5 Never mind what opinionated people think, know that if people like you and I keep thinking and doing what ever inventive thought. We can save our enviroment from Carbon poisoining.
I could see using this REBUILT engine as a slave for an EV motor, such as in an S10 or similar. The Electric motor could than also be mounted to the rear axle. Not too much different than what GM did with the Volt. Now that would be a nice project. Don't forget a few batteries as well.
@indigestive I believe that is true. In most applications, peak efficiency is at about 75% of maximum output. If you'd like to give me a bigger engine, I'll gladly take it. =). I have to say though, at cruising speed off the highway, I am probably at that ideal 75% zone.
@brianandlois not sure about what you're asking. I'm not 100% familiar with different types of diesel injection systems. All I know is that it's indirect injection and the injection pump is Yanmar designed, but similar to Bosch inline pumps, with very refined fuel metering for low emissions and economy.
@ladyanatsu there is a great deal of discussion already in these comments, and on my other videos. In short, this is a Yanmar 2TNV70-PGA surplus diesel from Surplus Center in Omaha. There is a custom engine adapter plate and mounts. modified flywheels, exhaust, and cooling system. The engine required an air cleaner adaptation and governor modification. I also added a turbo, which required some other changes.
@tenillechristine tht guy in the video is fo sho not a farmer- did you see how he was dressed? and there is no such thing as a "nerd farmer" sounds like you are from NYC or somrthing, and have never even seen a farmer
this is the same thing im trying to do with my 1997 sunfire five speed .... buy im using a 3 cylender from an old farm tractor.... what kinda problems did u run into? how did u get the clutch to match the flywheel.. with thr different input shatf on thr trans?
@broken95zj That should be outstanding! Watch all my Festiva videos, and that should answer some of your questions. Let me know anything else you'd like to know.
@miketonon Nothing more than Federal. We currently have no emissions or safety inspections. However, our area has been borderline for air quality for a number of years, and more stringent Federal standards may force some local changes sooner than later.
@josephdupont Some Metros weigh as little as 1600 lbs, I'd imagine that would work very well. This M6 transmission was used in a number of Ford products, and some do have lower gear ratios. It might be worthwhile to seek out one of those. The engine came from Surplus Center in Omaha, NE, less than $800. They are starting to run low on them, however.
Stock festivas get 53 mpg with very conservative driving. I have heard of 60 from some owners but 53 is the common best. 0-60 is 10 seconds and 113 is the stock top speed. This is a huge loss of performance with very minimal gains.
@neanderpaul I seem to have to point this out a lot, but these are in-town mileage numbers. I have not been able to take a long enough highway drive to get the numbers, but I would imagine that mid 70's MPG would not be unexpected.
@asayle3r5 The point is you have rendered it useless for the highway. A metro for instance is scary to accelerate on to the highway. 13-15 seconds 0-60 is dangerous in such a small car. What have you brought your 0-60 up to? 60 seconds? You ruined a perfect car. The festivas average 300,000 miles. AVERAGE. I have seen 10 with 500,000 miles. "Total Cost of Operation" trumps short term in town mpg gains. Durability, dependability, cheap availability of parts make festivas the KING of the "TCOO".
@neanderpaul On definitely has to choose the route and time of day wisely to avoid hazardous situations. If I use the highway to commute, I begin on a highway that goes from low speeds with stoplights to controlled access, so onramps are not an issue. This car was destine for the crusher with a blown engine. It has been given a new, demented life. It's funny, you just can't find cars that weigh as little as this nowadays. Almost nothing is less than 3000 lb, and this is only about 1800 lb.
@GarrettKeetley A few thoughts... first of all, those cars are far better than this, but you would pay more. I enjoy working on it, so it's not a waste of time any more than any other hobby. And, which of those VW models have those ratings? Recent models get mid 30's city and mid 40's highway. Very good, but it's not mid 60's CITY like I'm getting.
@13brotary See edit note at beginning of video; I've hit at least 65 with it. 40 is a piece of cake. I can do 45 up most hills around here, and 65 down them.
@asayle3r5 Ok, sorry, the notes have been removed since the addition of advertising. I can very easily get the car to go 55-60 MPH (with the Turbo) and 65 is not too hard on a downhill.
I admire your efofrt in converting that, but a european ford fiesta, and escort van can get 55mpg with the 1.8 litre diesel engine, you'd have a far more pleasant car to drive if you importd one of those engines and used it in that festiva, which is even lighter than the escort van and the fiesta i'd imagine
@MechanicallyDriven I suppose... If I were going to that expense, though, I'd probably choose something like a Mazda Miata to start with. There may be a time, sooner than later, that I won't be able to get this past emission inspections in our area (which we don't have currently). Air quality standards keep increasing, and the Wichita metro area barely passed sometimes, under the old air quality standards. Maybe one of those modern diesels would pass as equal emissions to an old gas engine.
@asayle3r5 I wonder if you could tell me what specific emissions they would be testing for? the main thing they're worried about in europe is co2, which diesels, produce far less. As a result annual tax for diesel cars has reduced a lot. I get the impression that there is a lot of misinformed anti diesel sentiment in America, and that the government and state authorities don't want people to have diesel engines, calling them "dirty", but they are really less harmful than petrol (gas) engines.
@MechanicallyDriven I know, most of the world has a hard time believing we have more strict auto emissions standards, but it's true. The US is concerned with smog and ozone producing exhaust components, which are oxides of nitrogen and unburnt hydrocarbons. In North Texas, for instance, cars are put on a dyno and the emissions are checked with the engine under load yearly for every passenger vehicle. Diesels have high NOx output because of high cylinder temps. Heard of urea injection diesels?
@apintonut That's a good idea. Ford sold a number of cars with this generic tranny, the M6, I believe. Obviously, being a transaxle car, the differential gearing is a little harder to manipulate. I was figuring I could get a second transmission with different ratios and mix and match for the optimal equipment.
@asayle3r5 i would only bother with lowering the dif. gears just call your local trans & dif. shop and tell them what u need and let them do the info and parts locating work for yah on the possibilities available. lets say u have 3:08 gears and go to 4:10 ud only be able to do 70 mph top speed but u would be able to get to it with the lower HP
How did you marry / math the Clutch and gearbox? Tried turning the pump up for a little more power? I have a 22hp yanmar engine spare in my garage. Darn good engines they are
@rickyj2010 Watch the last few videos I've posted, and you will see the adaptation in detail. If you can tell me how to adjust the pump without screwing it up, I'm all ears.
@ka24det28 New surplus, less than $800.00 from Surplus Center in Omaha, search "Surpluys Center", go wto website, then choose: Engines->diesel-> 13.4 HP 3600 RPM YANMAR DIESEL ENGINE 2TNV70-PGA
Just a hint, that brace will rip your firewall after a short time, it'd be better to put a brace between the shock towers and fabricate a bracket to fit. If you need more power just fit a small turbo to it with an intercooler and a blow off valve.
I have a 1600cc tcdi Ford Focus in the UK and that does 60mpg in the town, 0-60mph in 10s and 120mph top speed. A small engine in a heavy car will strain it and use more fuel. 500cc is mad. That K&N is NOT an air filter, they have a small surface area with big holes you can see through. They allow dirt in to the engine and shotblast turbo chargers, the oil also ruins MAF sensors. Use a proper paper element which does filter the air and provide more than enough.
@urbex2007 yep, I can't say a larger engine is a bad idea. This engine can be purchased for less than $800 surplus, so that's what the original builder tried. When/if I build a new one, I will use at least a 3 cylinder. That is a paper element filter, it just has some surface dirt on it. Maybe I could replace it. I don't have a MAF, it's mechanical fuel injection.
@davidstapleton275 look at my most recent upload, where I show both flywheels out of the car. "Fiddling with Festiva Flywheels". I'm having them machined right now to fit together better.
I was under the impression that, because they lack a throttle plate, diesels lose less efficiency at partial-power settings than gas engines.
So, couldn't you put in a slightly larger diesel (say 25-ish hp) that would still get the majority of the fuel savings...with fewer driving compromises?
@bcubed72 If I had one, I would. The guy who put this together used this particular engine because it was dirt cheap, I think. Surplus Center's next biggest engine costs more than twice as much
How difficult was it to get that Yanmar to mate up with the transmission? I've seen a video on here with a HD 1340cc engine in there...i'm wondering how that was done as well.
@humansteaks not sure about the HD 1340. The guy who first put this together (it was not me) was not sure if it would work at all, so he cut some corners. He bolted the original Festiva flywheel to the Yanmar flywheel, which saved him a lot of trouble. There is a more complete description of the installation, toward the beginning of these comments.
Wouldnt you get better gas milage with an engine that didnt have to be overworked but, had a bit more power? I dont know much about cars, just wondering.
@fxdrdnme there may be some truth to that. Almost everything in automotive design is a compromise. Typical cars are grossly overpowered for city driving, and running an engine with minimal output compared to its peak power is not efficient, either. In a sense, the mileage number I have recorded are proof that it is a very efficient way to move a car around the city. Since I have not done an extended highway trip, I can only guess, but it should also be very good economy on the highway, too.
Hi, I'm very close to buying one of the surplus center Yanmars. can i ask a few questions: what RPM is it set to run at, and can you adjust the constant speed...is it fairly easy to wire...what else can you tell me about the engine, getting it running, etc...I want to run a hydraulic power unit with it...thanks
@UberKrispy Thanks for watching my video. That's a lot of engine for the price that Surplus Center is charging. I did not do the initial installation of the engine, but I was given to understand that changing the governor to variable speed was not difficult. I want to say that the original speed was 3600 rpm for a generator, but I could be wrong. Wiring is simple; The fuel solenoid has 3 wires: one ground, one start, and one run.
@UberKrispy The start coil draws high current to pull the solenoid in, and the run coil holds it there. If that is hooked up wrong, the solenoid will melt down in a matter of minutes. Glow plugs need to be wired, and the starter needs to be wired. You might want an alternator, but you probably don't need one, since the only running circuit load is the cutoff solenoid.
The technology is there (has been). My mothers old '85 Honda CRX HF (1.5, carb.) would get 50+ mpg. 2000 rpm at 60 mph. The later fuel inj. ones did even better. And while a diesel will most always do better, small 4 cylinder engines are right behind. It's just a matter of will. I like your Fiesta, though.
Thanks for the comment. Keep in mind that my mileage numbers are for city driving... perhaps this summer I can take a road trip to get highway numbers.
This is nothing new people.. I have a uber rare ad from 1968 of Holman-Moody's then new, Inline-6 Diesel engine that was tested to make 290HP and get 60MPG!! Remember this was 1968! Soon after these posters were printed... You never heard about that engine again. y I believe is was yet another cover-up, probably by a big oil company of the time.
@Sarcasticscum I'm not saying there is anything here that is extraordinary. Perhaps the most unusual aspect is that it works as well as it does with so little HP. Do you have any more information on that Holman-Moody's engine? What sort of vehicle was it powering when it got 60 MPG?
Yes, I was just posting that comment to kinda throw that out there, since this is a video oriented towards gas MPGs. The add states that the engine advertised get 60 MPG within a weight range of 2,600 and 3,300 for sedans or trucks.
@asayle3r5 40's in town 50's at 55 mph with conservative driving. BUT 0-60 in 10 seconds and 113 mph top speed for a 5 speed seals the deal. Plus the stock 1.3 lasts like it thinks it's a diesel. I've seen 8 now with over 500,000 miles. Still, props for achieving a unique build.
I drive a dodge dakota v8. Would definatly like to have that car as a daily driver.....

And, which of those VW models have those ratings? Recent models get mid 30's city and mid 40's highway. Very good, but it's not mid 60's CITY like I'm getting.

13brotary 1 year ago
@13brotary See edit note at beginning of video; I've hit at least 65 with it. 40 is a piece of cake. I can do 45 up most hills around here, and 65 down them.
asayle3r5 1 year ago
@asayle3r5 Ok, sorry, the notes have been removed since the addition of advertising. I can very easily get the car to go 55-60 MPH (with the Turbo) and 65 is not too hard on a downhill.
asayle3r5 1 year ago
I admire your efofrt in converting that, but a european ford fiesta, and escort van can get 55mpg with the 1.8 litre diesel engine, you'd have a far more pleasant car to drive if you importd one of those engines and used it in that festiva, which is even lighter than the escort van and the fiesta i'd imagine
MechanicallyDriven 1 year ago
@MechanicallyDriven I suppose... If I were going to that expense, though, I'd probably choose something like a Mazda Miata to start with. There may be a time, sooner than later, that I won't be able to get this past emission inspections in our area (which we don't have currently). Air quality standards keep increasing, and the Wichita metro area barely passed sometimes, under the old air quality standards. Maybe one of those modern diesels would pass as equal emissions to an old gas engine.
asayle3r5 1 year ago
@asayle3r5 I wonder if you could tell me what specific emissions they would be testing for? the main thing they're worried about in europe is co2, which diesels, produce far less. As a result annual tax for diesel cars has reduced a lot. I get the impression that there is a lot of misinformed anti diesel sentiment in America, and that the government and state authorities don't want people to have diesel engines, calling them "dirty", but they are really less harmful than petrol (gas) engines.
MechanicallyDriven 1 year ago
@MechanicallyDriven I know, most of the world has a hard time believing we have more strict auto emissions standards, but it's true. The US is concerned with smog and ozone producing exhaust components, which are oxides of nitrogen and unburnt hydrocarbons. In North Texas, for instance, cars are put on a dyno and the emissions are checked with the engine under load yearly for every passenger vehicle. Diesels have high NOx output because of high cylinder temps. Heard of urea injection diesels?

lower the differential gear ratio ud get more get up and go but less top speed but it would get there with less struggle
apintonut 1 year ago
@apintonut That's a good idea. Ford sold a number of cars with this generic tranny, the M6, I believe. Obviously, being a transaxle car, the differential gearing is a little harder to manipulate. I was figuring I could get a second transmission with different ratios and mix and match for the optimal equipment.
asayle3r5 1 year ago
@asayle3r5 i would only bother with lowering the dif. gears just call your local trans & dif. shop and tell them what u need and let them do the info and parts locating work for yah on the possibilities available. lets say u have 3:08 gears and go to 4:10 ud only be able to do 70 mph top speed but u would be able to get to it with the lower HP
apintonut 1 year ago
@apintonut I'd be happy wrapped out at 65 in 5th gear.

asayle3r5 1 year ago
Just a hint, that brace will rip your firewall after a short time, it'd be better to put a brace between the shock towers and fabricate a bracket to fit. If you need more power just fit a small turbo to it with an intercooler and a blow off valve.
myfeeling4you 1 year ago
@myfeeling4you yep, that's gone. Look at the other videos for the turbo and brace as you describe.
asayle3r5 1 year ago
I have a 1600cc tcdi Ford Focus in the UK and that does 60mpg in the town, 0-60mph in 10s and 120mph top speed. A small engine in a heavy car will strain it and use more fuel. 500cc is mad. That K&N is NOT an air filter, they have a small surface area with big holes you can see through. They allow dirt in to the engine and shotblast turbo chargers, the oil also ruins MAF sensors. Use a proper paper element which does filter the air and provide more than enough.
urbex2007 1 year ago
@urbex2007 yep, I can't say a larger engine is a bad idea. This engine can be purchased for less than $800 surplus, so that's what the original builder tried. When/if I build a new one, I will use at least a 3 cylinder. That is a paper element filter, it just has some surface dirt on it. Maybe I could replace it. I don't have a MAF, it's mechanical fuel injection.
asayle3r5 1 year ago
@urbex2007 I don't think a Focus TDCi manages 60mpg in town/city driving. Anyway, a UK gallon is larger than a US gallon.
I really don't like modern common rail diesels, there's so much to go wrong with them. At least the Festiva/Yanmar combination is simple.
brainwrongs 1 year ago
@urbex2007 Unfortunately, US emission standards rule out most diesel autos here.

tpvalley 1 year ago
@mostly4moderate Thanks for the backing. Yep, that engine is pretty favorable.
asayle3r5 1 year ago
I was under the impression that, because they lack a throttle plate, diesels lose less efficiency at partial-power settings than gas engines.
So, couldn't you put in a slightly larger diesel (say 25-ish hp) that would still get the majority of the fuel savings...with fewer driving compromises?
bcubed72 1 year ago
@bcubed72 If I had one, I would. The guy who put this together used this particular engine because it was dirt cheap, I think. Surplus Center's next biggest engine costs more than twice as much

How difficult was it to get that Yanmar to mate up with the transmission? I've seen a video on here with a HD 1340cc engine in there...i'm wondering how that was done as well.
humansteaks 1 year ago
@humansteaks not sure about the HD 1340. The guy who first put this together (it was not me) was not sure if it would work at all, so he cut some corners. He bolted the original Festiva flywheel to the Yanmar flywheel, which saved him a lot of trouble. There is a more complete description of the installation, toward the beginning of these comments.
asayle3r5 1 year ago
Wouldnt you get better gas milage with an engine that didnt have to be overworked but, had a bit more power? I dont know much about cars, just wondering.
fxdrdnme 1 year ago
@fxdrdnme there may be some truth to that. Almost everything in automotive design is a compromise. Typical cars are grossly overpowered for city driving, and running an engine with minimal output compared to its peak power is not efficient, either. In a sense, the mileage number I have recorded are proof that it is a very efficient way to move a car around the city. Since I have not done an extended highway trip, I can only guess, but it should also be very good economy on the highway, too.
asayle3r5 1 year ago
Hi, I'm very close to buying one of the surplus center Yanmars. can i ask a few questions: what RPM is it set to run at, and can you adjust the constant speed...is it fairly easy to wire...what else can you tell me about the engine, getting it running, etc...I want to run a hydraulic power unit with it...thanks
UberKrispy 1 year ago
@UberKrispy Thanks for watching my video. That's a lot of engine for the price that Surplus Center is charging. I did not do the initial installation of the engine, but I was given to understand that changing the governor to variable speed was not difficult. I want to say that the original speed was 3600 rpm for a generator, but I could be wrong. Wiring is simple; The fuel solenoid has 3 wires: one ground, one start, and one run.
asayle3r5 1 year ago
@UberKrispy The start coil draws high current to pull the solenoid in, and the run coil holds it there. If that is hooked up wrong, the solenoid will melt down in a matter of minutes. Glow plugs need to be wired, and the starter needs to be wired. You might want an alternator, but you probably don't need one, since the only running circuit load is the cutoff solenoid.

this car would be the balls if you had to commute 40 miles a day on city roads...
IRONSEAN7 2 years ago 2
The technology is there (has been). My mothers old '85 Honda CRX HF (1.5, carb.) would get 50+ mpg. 2000 rpm at 60 mph. The later fuel inj. ones did even better. And while a diesel will most always do better, small 4 cylinder engines are right behind. It's just a matter of will. I like your Fiesta, though.
kolbpilot 2 years ago
Thanks for the comment. Keep in mind that my mileage numbers are for city driving... perhaps this summer I can take a road trip to get highway numbers.

This is nothing new people.. I have a uber rare ad from 1968 of Holman-Moody's then new, Inline-6 Diesel engine that was tested to make 290HP and get 60MPG!! Remember this was 1968! Soon after these posters were printed... You never heard about that engine again. y I believe is was yet another cover-up, probably by a big oil company of the time.
Sarcasticscum 2 years ago
@Sarcasticscum I'm not saying there is anything here that is extraordinary. Perhaps the most unusual aspect is that it works as well as it does with so little HP. Do you have any more information on that Holman-Moody's engine? What sort of vehicle was it powering when it got 60 MPG?
asayle3r5 2 years ago
Yes, I was just posting that comment to kinda throw that out there, since this is a video oriented towards gas MPGs. The add states that the engine advertised get 60 MPG within a weight range of 2,600 and 3,300 for sedans or trucks.
Sarcasticscum 2 years ago
Hey man. I´d have bought this car from you when I was working as a newspaper carrier.

asayle3r5 2 years ago
@asayle3r5 40's in town 50's at 55 mph with conservative driving. BUT 0-60 in 10 seconds and 113 mph top speed for a 5 speed seals the deal. Plus the stock 1.3 lasts like it thinks it's a diesel. I've seen 8 now with over 500,000 miles. Still, props for achieving a unique build.
