  • @tanji123 went to one of Gk's shows a few years ago, he laughed that barry manilow payed for his house, and denis waterman payed to furnish it. So your right, he did appreciate it lol

  • I am a big fan of both Gerard and Barry and love what both have done with this song, both are great artists and I think that very few in the history of popular music have equaled their status.

  • both Gerard's and Barry's versions are great. But hats off to Gerard for the origional music which I believe makes this song a priceless classic... Thanks gerard From one musician to another. . . .Thanks you inspire me.

  • Don't forget Gerard got royalties for Barry's version and probablly made a bit of money. Also he got noticed more than he would have. So maybe Barry did him a favor. Barry did Rupert Holmes "studio musician" on his Live album and Rupert was always appreciative of that. That was before " pina colada". But he got paid and I'm sure that is always helpful to unknown musicians. Either way, I think both versions are good.

  • Barry's version all the way xx this is good but Barry put's so much passion into his songs , thats missing here

  • @hobbily I don't think Kenny is missing the passion, I think his version is pasionate in a different way. Kenny wrote about the story of a struggling musicain and Manilow took the song and turned it into a song about a persons struggle through life. Both versions are great!

  • Just listened to Manilow's version again.........and prefer it. He sings it for everyman. Kenny sings it for musicians exclusively.

  • Great tune! Very American sentiment, a Brit would find it too schmaltzy. Manilow sings a better version - just!

  • Sheer class. What a talent.

  • Well done Gerard, fantastic It never leaves you mate

  • brilliant..but just remember, if barry manilow hadn't recorded it,who would have known it was gerard kenny who wrote it..give him some credit...a great song.

  • I was too hard on Barry I think when I commented a couple of months ago. So, I'm sorry for that.

Gerard's version is completely amazing. The way he performs it you can tell he knows it's his and he's enjoying how it sounds. Gerard's working hard to sell it, and in the middle of it he is wanting to sing it. There is something about "the mine" Gerard is relishing. It comes across clearly. The song was his, plain and simple with nothing wrong with it... So, why, Barry? Why?

  • The Phaetons were better.

  • Barry used to take credit for writing lots of McDonald's, Band-Aid and other used created for commercials. That is, until someone called him on it. Barry would take the credit for creating the world if he thought he could get away with it.

  • Barry Manilow ripped Gerard off!!! I'm a die hard Barry Manilow fan, but I just saw this today and I was amazed at what Gerard did before Barry took it. As far as I'm concerned, Barry robbed Gerard of this song and butchered it!!

Barry also took another of Gerard's, "Nickels And Dimes" , and ripped him off.

    Classless!!

This original version by a young man trying to sell a song with musicianship, enthusiasm, let alone happiness, deserves respect! I will learn this lyric for karaoke and perform.

  • Passionate. Always loved Barry's version ... but this trumps it.

  • I love this and the BM version. Question: why is there such a dearth of Gerard Kenny on You Tube? His Play me Some Porter Please album/CD? (sorry it's my age) is wonderful What about Miss Otis Regrets? If I leave you never? etc etc. Where are they?

  • A song written by one songwriter about the struggle for recognition by all songwriters and far superior to the re-written dross of Barry Manilow's.

    Thanks Gerard.

  • sorry guys i love both guys and im afraid barry screwed this song up!

  • This is how Gerard wrote it before Barry screwed it up. Three cheers for Mr. Kenny.

  • @herpur7

I've known Gerard since the mid 1960's (as friends and neighbors) although we have just recently gotten in touch via facebook after many years. I couldn't agree more ! He should definitely have done this song himself.... I suppose that's the industry.

  • I've known Gerard since the mid 1960's as a friend and neighbor on Long Island, New York. We recently made contact via facebook.... wonderful to see he's still going strong.

I must agree, he should have done this song ... NOT Manilow.

Gerard has always put his heart into his music.. to me, that sells the songs. Glad to see he continues to perform this very special song... One of my all-time favorites!
