15 years old and this is the kinda stuff i listen to, music nowadays is dreadful and songs are forgotten in months, this stuff will never EVER get old
@PAC1970 Are you talking about Marvin Pierce that tall middle man with the trumpet? Oh, that's how he dances which he has better cheorography than the rest of the band members.
The ohio players at times could pimp slap P-funk but p-funk had more good players to play around with. Id say they round out the top (3) funk bands of all time.
@FiontainBreanach hmmm walter "junie" morrison could play damn near every instrument that u had in the bands back then and could play them very good, better than most of the band members. dont get me wrong i love 3000! them dudes(outcast) were the stuff! they were creative consistant different and funky! junie was off the chain when it came to composing music. i always thought he should have recorded soundtracks because he could really get complex in his composing music. sometimes too complex.
@FiontainBreanach hmmm walter junie morrison could play every instrument in a band and play it very good.i think that with the ability to create is a force to wreckoned with! he broke the funk wide open with the funky worm.but 3000 is a creative dude also and has put his stamp on the hip hop! but he could very well be. time will tell.
@discoAL yeah philly was bangin, the players was bangin we had so much to groove to and they all had their own identities own sound and style. thats was missin now! we are in the clone age!
@dienglee - back when popular artists had talent period! This music is phenominal and substancially better than just about anything out there now! These guys were awesome!
I remember The "Ohio Players" having the best album covers around, still to this day!Nowadays, the R&B album covers are making people look like they're gay, at leased back in the days, People or groups had album covers that represented thier music, or showed the Theme to their music!
Funk was so great,,I miss this group,,I remember growing up hearing this all the time,,it still sounds good! funk lives,,James Brown is King!!papas go a brand new bag,,fire,,ohio players,,flashlight,,parliament,,
One of the best funk groups of the 70's no doubt. That drummer, Diamond was a beast with that bass pedal-he inspired Dennis Chambers to do what he does. Sweet Sticky thing is still the classic cut for them, along with 5 or 6 others.
So I went to recent Ohio Players show only to discover that Sugar was no longer in the band (The band I saw featured Diamond, Chet, Billy and Robert). I discovered that he went on to form "Sugarfoot's Ohio Players." But I can't find any info anywhere on the net about why he left the group and why there are now TWO Ohio Players outfits out and about touring and performing their classic hits! Anybody know why he split from the group?!
I recognize Sugarfoot (lead vocal/guitar), Billy (keys/vocal), Diamond (drums/vocal), Pee-wee and Merv (brass). I'm sure Rock is hiding back there somewhere on bass. But who is that playing second guitar/vocals beside Diamond (I should recognize him but I don't)? And who is that playing sax alongside Merv and Pee-wee (it doesn't look like Satch)?? Any Ohio Players authorities out there, please respond if you know. Thanks!!! OP at their peak LIVE on the German show Beat-Club with Uschi Nerke.
I can't stop watching this video. Aaaaaaarrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhh!!!! Something about it. I am wondering about this picture, Nothing bad. What's wit the hopping around.
I wondered who the people standing still at 3:27 were. Were they at the concert? And the green bored guy? Then I watched to the very end, they're in Germany!! That's almost as good as the Guitar Watson in Germany clip. Why exactly were these bands playing in Europe?
Diggin the instrumental prowess of this funk band. didnt think funk bands were that great musically, but the double necked guitar and gibson players are exceptions.
I was 9 years old when "Fire" came out. I thought--other than my father--that Sugarfoot was the coolest black man on the planet. In fact, the "Fire" album--you know, with the naked, sexy black mama wrapped around a huge fire hose on the cover--was the 1st album I ever owned. I asked my mom to get it for me. I told her the name of the album to ask for at the record store. When I came home from school it was lying on my bed. She found me and said while laughing, "Boy, WHAT did you have me buy?!"
@hmsheppard LOL that's hilarious. I can understand it's very tempting to have a mama on a album cover. That was very nice of your Mother though. My mother wouldn't allow me to ahve anything like that when I was growing up.
@opwbb74 Oh yeah, my Ma is so cool. I also remember my mother and I going to buy Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album for me, an album which she loved so much she ultimately swiped it from me and never gave it back! What I remember most is the free blue Elton John "Caribou" T-shirt that came with the purchase. I kept that sucker until it became full of holes and rips!
@hmsheppard i was 11 and bought this on cassette at king carol on 42nd and tenth ave this was the funkiest of the funkiest i was also a avid soul train fan yea that chick on the cover was smoking hot
Man whoever got a clip of this videotape. For someone who doesn't like or know The Ohio Players. I give a 10 out of 1-10. These guys hated those costumes and I guarantee they were 100% nervous on stage. At least they tried to be as calm as they can be. That I believe was unexpected of them.
This is the one that youtube keeps yanking off the site. Check it out while you can. IMHO this is THE BEST live performance of FIRE by the Ohio Players that I've seen!
