  • The ship you're in explodes and all you lose is your cash? lol that's too politically correct.

  • Too bad none of those games are fun.

  • I suppose she took down the Religious Pamphlets video.

  • @plica06 nope its still up

  • careers sounds vaguely like the game of life in america

  • That's a nice collection you got there. I loved playing board games as a kid.

  • (yawn)

  • I LOVE Careers! I played it a lot when I was a little child.

  • hey u hav a fantastic collection,I hav a good collection of board games also like Careers,Monopoly,Ulcers,RatRace,Risk,Scotland Yard,Squatter etc. I wonder if there is anyone else in the whole wide world thats plays the boardgame of careers as much and My Wife and I and nutty boardgame freak Robster. We have had sessions of up 12 hour

  • Careers sounds really fun. Where did you get it?

    = )

  • careers is a lot like life-the board game

  • look up the game masterpiece its so much fun its like a bidding action for paitings

  • i love the careers game also. i played it with my aunt, uncle and cousins, they've got an older version at least from the late 70's, but it didn't look like the one from the 70's you've got, it looked more like the 50's board, l've got one from about 2000 or late 90's it's an awesome game

  • ooo, for grandfather's wiskers game if you win you show the others your wiskers

  • You've got the same phone sound as me xD

  • the bird is a tucan

  • career is just like the game life..

  • im in love. giimmmee

    i want bored games ):

  • Board games are cool. I used to have a lot of board games when I was younger, but I don't have many anymore. I like Monopoly, but Scotland Yard was always my favorite game.

  • LOL I fully have that game (careers) but a more recent version... that's random!

  • lol mccaw.. its a tucan and i never heard of master mind dont think they have that in the u.s or i never pay attention to the less atractive games in the board game section

  • they have mastermind here... but you're right about it not being too attractive, lol.

  • isnt career like that game life?

  • there is a game really similar to careers that is called LIFE ...its really popular here in the USA , you should check it out

  • Hahah, life is awesome

I always seem to end up with the "split level" and 20000$ salary though xD

  • Do you have frustration?

I used to love that game when I was little just coz I liked to play with the clicky dome in the middle of the board :-D

  • I absolutely love board games. your collection got me thinking of my games and i can't wait to find some more now. my friend has a new version of careers, it's a fun game. Clue used to be one of my favourite games!

  • I don't know if it's been mentioned yet, but Careers kind of reminds me of the American (I guess it's american?) game 'Life'. Anyway, lovely vid/collection.

  • i miss her jewelry videos!

  • Toucan

  • i collect dice, mostly because my dad gave me my first dice and i liked the design of it so i started collecting them..i was about five when i started.and im 14 now so i dont know how many i have.

  • Are you or someone else listening to the Beach Boys in the back?...my cousins and I dressed in skirts and danced to some of their songs back like almost 20 years ago, lol. Memories...

  • You've inspired me to collect board games. I hope to find old board games like yours because I too find the designs very beautiful.

  • Very interesting collection!!!

  • You are so sweet and such a darling! I like your passion for collecting old things and listening to you talk about them. Hearing the Beach Boys in the background was such a nice touch. Lovely!

  • Kanugo looks like a pac of smokes/ciggarettes...lol

  • The career game looks like so much fun. I also agree with what you said about the time it was made. Just the idea of "seeing a rare butterfly" would never appear on a game nowadays. The 70's version is much more of what we see now ... "your sacked" and the likes. I would love to journey back through to another era. Ahhh, if only we could all be Doctor Who ... Great Video!

  • okay amoeba seems just awesome. i have never heard of it but i'm looking it up now lol i want that game

  • hey Bryony thanks for bringing some good memory for me! mastermind! the cover, those big multi coloured pieces and the smaller white and black ones. the little brown plastic shield thing! amazing! mine one had the indian woman too i think!

  • That is probably one of the most interesting collections I've seen!

I never really noticed the way fonts and colors and designes look on things like games, but it really is nice, isn't it? You have a great appreciation for them; very cool.

  • You have a great collection ! My favourite games are Scoop and Totopoly , although Careers is also good . You should keep them wrapped up in clear plastic sacks to stop the games discolouring over time . I have a great game called DRIVING TEST which is awesome !

  • I have an old Mad Magazine game which is basically Monopoly in reverse. You start out with a bunch of money and the object is to lose all of it. The first person to go broke wins.

  • wow i love the 70s careers game i love it !!

  • ok get out. i love old toys AND my fav choc is double deckers..

  • Sounds like an addiction.

  • I actually have a verynew verison of Mastermind.like 2001 or something. Damn, I wish it had the scary professor on it. Its quite boring looking.

  • I miss your jewelry collection videos

  • the old happy familes drawing, before they changed it to crap, are so great

    :D

  • here is a fact: my grandpa was a business partner with the creator of monopoly i am not lying its true

  • OMIGOSH i have played careers!!! it is the bestest game EVER!!!!!

    XXXXXem

  • haha more beach boys in the background. gotta love it!

  • Did anyone ever tell you that you have nice hands sweethart?

  • dude, orionsaint, that's creepy

  • This was like a trip down memory lane for me, but I was never competative enough to care who won, I just played for the laugh.

  • This is all I could find on Grandfather's Whiskers:

"This is a 3-in-1 card game by Waddington's. Anyone who has played the drawing game where the first person draws a head and turns it under, the second person draws the neck and shoulders without looking at the head and turns it under, the next draws the middle of the body etc. will recognise the first of the games. The other two games aren't so easy to describe so I'll leave it to the "How to Play" cards with the pack."

  • Do they have The Game of Life over there?

I swear it must have been made by members of academia. You could choose to go to work right away or go to university. The only way to win the game is to go to university. Brainwashing, I tell ya!

  • "There's not enough wings on words these days..." nyaha

  • now everyone's going to go out and buy 'careers'

  • I live in the US and I used to play a lot of board games and stuff. Connect 4, Scrabble, Life, Clue Jr., Parcheesi, Othello, and regular card games were my favorites. But it's true most people around here aren't really into board games, like, at all.

  • Cool. Wow that is a LOT of board games though. At what point does a collector become just a bit of a hoarder? :) There's a line somewhere.

  • cool. I remember about 10 years ago there was a revival of board-gaming - I seem to remember a few places opening up in London that were like cafe-bars specifically for playing board games, but it seems to have died out. It makes me slightly sad to think of families on holiday now, all sitting with their ipods on, playing on their gameboys...I think I learned a lot about life and interacting with people in caravans, playing board games, with the rain hammering down outside....

  • What is the game next to Lexicon? It's to the right. Sitting on the Adidis box. I can't make out the little picutes.

  • ;) great video! i think board games are a very british kind of thing. I'd be interested to know how much other youtubers from elsewhere played board games as a child. i assume it is a british thing cos it rains so much here...? my favourites = risk & totopoly. war and gambling... mmmmm... guess what sex i am? :)

  • i game i rember from being a kid was where you were on a desert island made up of blocks and every turn a piece of the island was taken away and you had to save all your men with a little boat b4 the island sank and avoid the sharks - cant rember what its called tho :)

  • Here's a link to someone selling the complete Grandfathers Whiskers card game with game rules... in England... in 3 hours.

  • Do you have l'attaque? Such a good board game.

  • I am now on a quest to find the old Careers game, the one that you think is from the 50's. I prefer that one as it has a bit more warmth to it.

  • "there's not enough wings on words today." -Brilliant

  • Paperlilies thanks for the amusing/quirky videos. Here are few links on the careers game including what looks like an 80's edition on ebay.

  • By the way the bird was a toucan, makes me feel like eating fruit loops.

  • If you like Careers, you should definitely check out The Game of Life. Nearly the same concept as Careers, except instead of going through jobs, you go through life. It ranges from education, to taxes, to employment, to love and to children. Pretty fun game to play on a boring night.

  • GREAT video. I had forgotten about playing Mastermind when I was a kid.

  • You did not mention that the man on the Master Mind box is considerably older than the woman. Her father? Not likely. Her mentor or perhaps her graduate advisor? That's what I see. Also, apparently, her lover, considering her pose. She's oriental because the artist is playing to two ethnic stereotypes. Oriental women are supposedly smarter than western women and more subservient than western women. She is therefore intelligent, but not threatening to the game's mostly male demographic.

  • Great video.

  • The design of the 70s version of "careers" is awesome! The fonts, the layout, the colors, the round edges...

This kind of design is quite popular in the web today. There are many websites out there which use exactly the same design elements. Now I know where they got the idea from. ;-)

I've the very same Super Mastermind right here. The picture on the front cover is so cool. I love this game.

  • you brought back some memories for me with some of your games. I had the mastermind game as a child and loved it.

  • Good video. 4 happies.

  • Wow... that's a lot of board games!

This might sound like a silly thing to say, but you have a really nice shaped face :)

  • search for it online.

  • You had some crazy mad scientist hair going on at 7:29 O.o

  • i ADORE mastermind! i think you have an awesome collection too! i collect dice, playing cards, and journals... so i understand your collection, and i kind of envy you for it, because now i want to collect them! i also like fonts too, and my mom makes fun of me, when i go places and i go "that font's Scriptina!!" or whatever. i'm really a dork.

  • OK, I totally cracked up at "There's not enough wings on words these days."

  • Have you heard of the board game called Aggravation? I still have that one and it's looking for a good home, If your intrested

  • look the game up online i'm sure you could find the instructions to that "grandpas whiskers" is it?

  • Great stuff Paperlilies, I heartily endorse your nerdy antique boardgame obsession. I've got a really old copy of Monopoly kicking around somewhere... I should pull it out and find out just how old. By the way that Amoeba game looks pretty cool, very simple but aesthetic design like you say.

Here you will find the rules for Grandfathers Whiskers... enjoy! It's a little hard to read.. but fairly simple to understand... keep making the vids!

  • mastermind is king

  • its been to long since I last played a board game. Awsome glasses they make you look very sophisticated.

  • If you keep wearing those glasses I promise I'll put 5 stars on every video you make.

  • Watched a Paperlilies video, gain 10 happys.

  • I put some rubbish in my earlier comment. We certainly had "Kan-u-Go" but the game like "Scrabble" we had, was called "Funworder". It was brought back from New Zealand for us by a family friend. (We called her "auntie".) I think it was identical and marketed in NZ under that name. Funny how the name came just came back to me after all this time.

  • I've always loved games and as a child I played a lot of board games.Monopoly, cluedo, escape from colditz, formula one, stratego and lots more. They look kind of dull and simplistic compared to pc games but I think the need for live human opponents made them more fun and better learning tools.Certainly you learn that most people cheat and find losing difficult.

  • Cool board game collection. Religious pamphlets, very interesting.

  • Oh! Careers... Theres a board game that looks like it in Canada. Or dunno if there's some in USA ou UK but umm... It's called Like and it's pretty fun! Theres card that comes with it and it's really colourful Uh... anyways =P It's not an old board game so... umm!

  • I played a lot of Careers at my Grandparents' house growing up. It was a red Parker box but the board wasn't all 70's like that, so maybe it was a 60's version.

Once when I was about 5 I was playing Mastermind with my mom, and when she left the room and came back I miraculously figured out the sequence on my first try. I got a well-deserved lecture about cheating.

  • GRANDFATHERS WHISKERS: for 2 or more platers. deal cards face down. the players must not look at the face side of their cards. the player on the left of the dealer leads and turns his card face up in the center of the table. each player plays a card in turn. each successice card should be quickly plaed so that the body is fitted to the head on the last card played. the title line 'grandertahers whiskers' on the back of each card indicates the half containing the body.

  • That was really fascinating! When I was a kid we played Ludo on a board which was from the early 1950s. I remember "Kan-u-Go". I seem to remember it was something like Scrabble. I wonder if "Careers" was inspired by "Monopoly". The layout looked rather similar. Thanks again!

  • I was born in Peru...yet I did not go in uranium prospecting, hm, go figure.

  • I didn't get what I hoping for in the mail today.

  • I love your glasses. I too have a bit of a board game love. They are remaking old games, like the original Candyland. Clue is my favorite game and I rule at it. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v25/angabel/cluebracelet.jpg It isn't mine; I wish! Those are the original little characters I think.

  • Twister makes for some seriously evil drinking games. I was never very fond of bored games or cards, but hey, to each their own. Peace!

  • Oh, btw.. I collected stamps and coins which made me very bored. Then god created Atari 2600, and Nintendo and Sega, and PC's and I haven't been bored since.

  • Cool, Thanks for sharing that. Some of those games are crazy. Gotta love a bit of Beach Boys once in a while :) Pleasent change. Looks liek you beat you youtube block.

  • xcellent selection of games. I used to play careers all the time. That bird was a toucan by the way. :P You might enjoy http://www.nostalgiagames.net/

  • This is a really fun game by Waddingtons, or rather three games because there are several ways you can use these cards. Anyone who has played the drawing game where the first person draws a head and turns it under, the second person draws the neck and shoulders without looking at the head and turns it under, the next draws the middle of the body etc etc. will recognise the first of the games. There are some very strange beings made in this way.

  • "theres not enough wings on words these days" lol

    [hadrians]

  • I Grew Up playing mastermind with my Mom.It was wone of her favorite games...along with Gin Rummy..Battleship,Life (which seems to be alot like Careers)...Have a great day...

  • I also liked A lot role playing games...I forgot to mention games like blood royale,Sorry,Trivial Pursuit...Board games seem to bring people together...Hmmm I misss them really...

  • I remember playing a game called Ninnies and Knumbskulls. It was like a strange form of Chess. Googled it, found nothing but a dead link.

I remember playing Stratego, Sorry, and of course Manopoly.

  • I think that's because it was really called "Take the Brain"? Here's someone else making the same mistake (only spelling "numbskulls" in a more traditional way):

    http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/605773

  • This page says it's also called "smess - the ninny's chess" and has a good picture of the board - is that the game you meant?

    http://www.exhibit5a.com

(and there rules about what URLs you can post? I had to split it onto 2 lines before I could post this comment)

  • Very cool, I dont have any old board games. They look pretty interesting though.

  • Grandfather's Whiskers should have 48 playing cards, each with a head and body on, and 4 instruction cards. The idea is you lay the cards down one on top of the other to create a person with head and body. If you lay down an old man's head on a bed, you then have to call if his whiskers are in or out of the bed.

  • The backs of the cards also comprise six separate jigsaw type puzzles; the cards numbered from 1 to 8 make a simple puzzle, and the remaining groups pf cards become successively more difficult. The last group of cards (41 - 48), in which grandfather and his whiskers are depicted, is the most advanced puzzle of the whole series.

  • maybe not as "technically well done" as some others, PL, but ranks as one of my favorites of all time. You have a very unique gift of making the viewer feel you're talking to just him/her. The video has a very genuine feel to it. Thanks for sharing that with us.

  • Have you seen the movies Zathura and Jumanji? They are based on fantasy board games with magical powers.

  • um, i think it was a tocan (i dont think i spelt it right)I really loved this video, im a succer for old stuff - especially from the 70s. (can i ask what music that is in the background - i really like it!)

  • When I use to live next to a Goodwill store it became a tradition of me and my friends to grab a case of beer and then stop by the thrift store and each pick up an interesting looking board game. We use to spend our evenings drinking and playing these games, often having to make up our own crazy nonsensical rules when the original instructions they were not included. Those were great times.

  • Here's a guy with a Grandfather's Whiskers deck WITH the rules. You might ask him for info, or you could buy the deck.

    http://www.nostalgiagames.net/phdi/p1.nsf/supppages/nostalgia?opendocument&part=3

  • That was very interesting, the old board games really were very interesting. And the grapics... yes.

    Thanks for sharing that.

  • Shutes and ladders is a classic board game.

    No D&D!?!

  • cluedo.... that game rocks. Bring it on. I bet you're on the edge of your seat now. ;)

  • ....Damn!...that's a lot of boardgames. I do get what you mean about the 'feel' of boardgames... they're their own form of entertainment, and that's just awesome. :)

  • haha - Love the Rocketship on Careers! Have you ever played "The Game of Life" - it's a pretty popular boardgame here in the US. Slightly similar to that careers game, but I think the board is a lot cooler. there are plastic houses & mountains that add a "3-D" aspect to the board.

Clue is great too! I never saw Amoeba or Master Mind - they look cool!

  • I remember that, we had it in the UK too. I think you had to be a journalist to get loads of money!

  • Even though it's just done with a vid-cam, you could submit this to film festivals and win awards in the short documentary category! Every consider it?

  • um, i don't think so! its not very technoligically well done! or planned, or anything. but thanks! :D

  • But wait, I really want to know how to play Mastermind!

  • risiko thats my favourit board game, one of the easiest games to learn and play, but very addictive

  • Do collect only board games or do you also collect electronic board games...cuz i heard that monopoly became an electronic game only in England. Do you still play those games. You shouldn't play with other people because it might get messed up/dirty. For me, I collect keychains from all sorts of places: museums, amusement parks, states, countries, islands, etc.

  • lol, the box doesn't even work any more.

  • lol, the box doesn't even work any more.

  • Yay for me, virgin vid from PL :) no views, comments, favourites, honors or rates!
