i have to say, the fuzz tones dont really sound like eric johnson's fuzz tones. his sound almost like a horn, yours sounds like a fuzz. dont get me wrong though, its a very nice fuzz sound though. your tube driver tone sounds pretty close though. a little muffled, but that might be the camera. clean tones sound really nice, a little too much echo for my liking but to each their own.
Sounding great! I'm not familiar with the "tube works" Tube Driver. Is it basically the same as a BK Butler? I have the BK with the 4 knobs w/bias and noticed this one has 3 knobs on top. Sounds really nice!
The third setting (lead) was the closest thing to EJ's sound. The other 2 weren't even close. Too bright IMHO......... But you did say there was some Hendrix influence there also. But Hendrix sound was about as dry as you could get minus the vibes and wahs he used. Nice rig though, very nice. EJ used 2 twin heads to get his clean tone and also had very specific pup configs, ect. The Super Reverb( which I prefer) is a much brighter amp than the twins he used....
I know I'm gunna get flamed for this but whats the name of the Pink Floyd song he played demoing the clean side? I cannot for the life of me remember it :(
nice rig man ! do you bring everything on stage or do you have a lighter live set up ? It already takes me 30mn to set up my Benrod Plexi head / 4x12 + 3-4 pedals so.... ;-)
Sweet rig dude! I was thinking about getting an echoplex too, do you know where I would find one? And are the echoplexes you are using tubes or solid state? I hear that they come broken a lot, so I was also wondering if you know of any place that sells parts like the tapes inside, or repairs them. Thanks alot!
@ragnarok11223344 The easiest way to pick up an Echoplex is either Ebay or Craigslist. If you are looking for a ballpark approximation with no reliablity issues try the Strymon El Capistan ($300), Empress Superdelay ($400), or Skreddy Echo ($300). My Echoplex's are the EP-3 Solid State models like what EJ and Page use. Bost of mine needed some TLC when I got them but I like working on stuff like that! Google Regis's Echoplex Page for more info on restoring these legendary units.
@ragnarok11223344 Also for tapes there are a few guys who sell the proper replacement tapes on Ebay. It's about $50 a roll with like 300ft of tape or something rediculous...pretty easy to rewind your own cartridges if you know what you are doing. All in all I probably have $200 worth of tools to keep the Echoplex's alive (de-magnetizer, replacement cartridges, isopropyl alcohol, razors, magnetic tape splicers, roller cleaner, Q tips, ect...) BTW Fulltone echo cartridges work great too!
@rufuss1973 Sure! Eric's lead settings are usually: Presense--0 Bass---5 Mids---3 Treble---0 Volume I---10 Volume 2---7 or 8 I've never had a ton of luck putting the volumes that high, with the Tube Driver it oversaturates the sound. I like my volume 1 at about 7 and volume 2 at about 4 or 5. The Tube Driver should be set: Volume: slightly less than unity (usually about 4) Tone knob(s) : 0 Gain: 4 The Echoplex really helps nail the violin tone down too. Good luck!
I have 4 celestion G12 65's from '81. Found them in an old Marshall cab when I pulled the back off. And think: I was going to get rid of the cabinet because I didn't like straight cabs! Those speakers sound way better than a Vintage 30 any day.
depends on the cone numbers. different cone versions exist. i had original 1986 G12-65's and thought they had a serious mid hump frequency that could not be dialed out at all. they sound great cranked, but only cranked. eventually i sold them and i dont regret it at all - peavey sheffield 5150 1200's back to back the sheffields had much better mix and sit in a band environment at all volumes.
Impressed! Nice job on the EJ tones and (more importantly) riffs.

"Hendrix meets Eric Johnson" - IF ONLY! lol.
...that won't happen in this world, but you have some very cool pedals though, thanks for posting!

If you want the real deal germanium based fuzz, buy an Analogman Sunface NKT-275, high gain mod. Best fuzz--EVER!
