@royrand even self taught drummers become better because they use technique for muscle memory. Technique isn't really relative because regardless of how fast or tight your playing is, if you used bad technique you can hurt yourself in the long run. I've never seen an exceptional drummer holding the stick in "almost a retarded way." ALL of the "best" drummers conform to one, or a few different, hand and foot techniques.
