Well said Stefan! I always wondered about the truth and what was really going on of the coast of Somali. I love the clarity you bring to often unclear main stream news! Thanks again.
The piracy is taking place far outside of the 12 mile coastal limit, as far as several hundred miles away. This is piracy, this is illegal.
The dumping is not proven, some unknown entity did a "Study" all the reporting is being done by internal and activist forces. Also no one is fishing in Somali waters.
You are supporting a conspiracy created by the manipulative and violent warlords that are raping their own country.

Not doing 5 minutes of research on Wikipedia to find 2 attacks inside Somalia's 12-mile limit (one of them a yacht!) and 40-odd attacks 70+ miles out, where, incidentally, dumping is unlikely to account for Somalia's poor fishing?
Evil Europeans hauling their nuclear waste to Somalia when they've got all that un-pirate-infested ocean?
Is he that gullible or just intent on spreading misinformation? He seems reasonably intelligent...must be the latter.
he's definitely not as gullible as you are. sometimes it pays to find a non american news source to get the truth because the govt controls our media. there is a reason people do things. it doesn't make it right for them to kidnap and kill anybody but they have to protect their coast the same way we have to.
One of my "sources" is my own common sense...I wish more people would listen to theirs rather than parrot what they're spoon-fed.
There is Absolutely No Way I'm going to believe that people are hauling their nuclear waste all the way to Somalia's coast. What's wrong with all that deep ocean in between?
And there is even less chance I'm going to believe that commercial shipping is invading Somalia's 12-mile limit. They are steering WAY clear. This whole video relies on that assertion.
so I guess you also believe that the american ship that was in their waters was actually carrying food to bring to Somalia huh? even though we as a government NEVER provide help (like food, water, etc) to Africa.
1) I never made any such claim. But It may well have been, why else dare to go there?
2) American GOVERNMENT aid? I dunno. American-based relief organizations? Certainly. If U.S. Government ships were attacked this would be at a whole different level.
3) "american ship", singular? I guess you're conceding my point that the vast majority of ships attacked were well outside Somali waters. This is the main point around which everything else revolves.
Hang em high, that's how we stopped piracy in the early 1800's after the Barbary pirates had thousands of hostages held up for ransom. Hang their scrawny little necks. If they don't like it they can walk to where the food is, as Sam Kinison said...

Somali fishermen in various regions of the country also complained to the international community about the illegal foreign fishing, stealing the livelihoods of poor fishermen, waste dumping and other ecological disasters, including the indiscriminate use of all prohibited methods of fishing: drift nets, under water explosives, killing all endangered species like sea-turtles, orca, sharks, baby whales, etc. as well as destroying reef, biomass and vital fish habitats in the sea
From 1998 to 2006, consecutive Ministers of Fisheries of Puntland State of Somalia have repeatedly appealed to the international community: UN, EC, African Union, Arab League and to individual nations, advising the members states of these organizations to help keep foreign countries poaching vessels and crews from their countries out of the Somali waters.
In September 1995, leaders of all the Somali political factions of the day (12 of them) and two major Somali NGO Networks jointly wrote to the UN Secretary General, Dr Boutros Boutros Ghali, with copies to the EU, Arab League, OIC, OAU and to other involved parties, detailing the illegal fishing and hazardous material dumping crises in the Somali sea waters and requesting the UN to set up a body to manage and protect these waterways.

Those people aren't guarding the Somali shores...they are using weapons to capture ships for their own selfish benefit. They're pirates. It's appauling that you would even defend them.
I'M a dumb yankee? According to your profile...YOU'RE the one who is dumb enough to need reference videos to growing weed. (Those are the videos in your favorites) It's really not all that hard.
I agree on the moral issues, but Somali piracy is still a problem. I have read your work, Stefan, and I still do not know how Somalia could survive without a state.
Anon1696, save the melodramatic hyperbole, that's not what I meant.
My point is that Stefan pretending that the Somali's are doe eyed fawns in a pristine forest suddenly thrust into the cruel harsh world is pure rubbish. They are what they are: violent, greedy pirates and anyone foolish enough to ignore that fact is either a fool or intellectually dishonest.
What I find telling is that if Stefan were to go to Somalia and spew his Anarchist-atheist nonsense, he'd be lined up against a wall and shot.
Sorry Stefan, I've enjoyed some of your work, but this latest piece is truly 'cringeworthy'. Perhaps you could put your bravery to the test and move you and your family from the safety of Mississauga to Somalia (or any other Islamic nation) where you can espouse reason, logic, and philosophy...
That seems like a lot of effort with the new baby and all. How about simply not paying your taxes and then hit them with reason and logic when they come knocking. It's the cheapest way to go:)
Thank you for posting the other side to this story. I appreciate all of the information herein about the pirates. I also appreciate the history of how the pirates are an independent lot striving against the crown and corporate interest. Very good lineage there. I am subscribing.
empbac , when have American soldiers done what these pirates have done? When has the American navy attacked a huminatarian ship carrying aid and held it hostage, IN THE OPEN SEA. 12 miles my ass, thats funny. Every single hijacking, wow, I wish I could re-write facts like that.
Typical liberal , blocking someone who has common sense and things called facts. Anyone who compares these terrorist, thats what they are, to uniformed soldiers, are just plain stupid. Uniformed soldiers, who wear their uniform to identify them as combatants, do NOT INTENTIONALLY attack civilains, hijack their vehicls and hold them for ransom. I will say this again for you halfwits, THERE IS NO COMPARISON TO UNIFORMED SOLDIERS AND CIVILIAN PIRATES who take civilians hostage, NONE.
Thing is, when your country literally falls apart, there is no such thing as a uniform. You're asking for the impossible unless you demand that they don't make any attempt to defend themselves at all.
Additionally, I found the same source stef was using. The source does admit that some people are just gangsters.
Point is that you're grouping everyone into the same category. Those who take hostages are not necessarily the same people attempting to prevent exploitation.
American forces just go into someone's compound on a "paid tip" that they may or may not be an "insurgent", and destroy them...America is an empire, we are still a plantation of the crown...all our armed forces are doing is protecting the interests of commerce by the big money families
12 MILES off their coast? Really, is that the facts you want to use? How close was the Alabama? 240 Nautical miles. They drifted for days, certainly farther then 12 miles. Thye FIRE machine guns and RPGS , AT THE BOATS. Is that how youturn someone away? I prey to good they try this again to another ship with a US flag. Please oh please let the might of the US navy bear down upon them and wipe them off the map. We should do like the pirates, shoot first, ask questions later.
Yes, what a shame that those poor Priates were killed by those seals. They didd nothing wrong. Except threaten an innocent mans life who was delivering AID to THEIR country. Stef, your sources are a joke. You have zero proof of anything. I dont care if we dumped every once of trash on their shores, it DOES NOT justify taking innocent civilians hostage at gunpoint. Are you that dumb? Honestly, are you? You have the mentality of a 12 yr old.
Why is it wrong for Somalis to do it and okay for American soldiers to do it? He's pointing out the double standard. He's not saying it's a good thing to take hostages, just that these pirates aren't what they're being made out to be. AND that all 'civilized' navies are just a bunch of pirates anyway, so there's no real distinction except that one group is viewed as legitimate while the other is not.
ahh the US coast guard carry what exactly? High tech lazer guided no doubt.
The Somalis are just POOR so they only carry basic stuff like RPGs & AK47.
Did you even listen to the whole thing? They've had other country's nuke waste dumped inTHEIR territorial waters! Dump it in YOUR OWN yard dude!
Any Western nation would react.. maybe in a more high-tech way. But if its the local community coming up with direct actions then at least that EXPLAINS it better than GREED which is OUR modus operandi!
You guys need to stop drinking the Kool aid. First off, these terrorist are not like robin hood. They are NOT robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. They are stealing out of greed, plain and simple. And to the moron who compared unifromed troops in a combat area to these fools is quite possibly retarded. Soldiers in combat are the farthest comparison you can make against terrorist that hijack and kidnap INNOCENT civilians. Are you all that dumb, really?
America is the most powerful country in the world which means we can do what we want and always portray our actions as noble and just. If you do not agree, then you are unpatriotic and likely a terrorist.
My theory about this piracy issue is that it is a psyops program based on problem confilct resolution- create a problem, then provide the answer to the problem. UN control of international waters "protecting" shipping routes and lanes. Like what PNAC wants to do about oil; control the distribution of it. Could also be a form of misdirection. Peace2U!!
I am in the pirates corner quite frankly. The real pirates are the bankers, Wall Street crooks, corrupt politicians and the insurance and mortgage companies which have brought the economic crisis on with their "savage capitalism". Had the world paid attention to the situation in Somalia years ago, these poor pitiful souls have now nothing left to loose.
Since they have no government and they are ruled by war lords and Mogadishu is a Mad Max reality show, they are really Robin Hoods. They didn't readily resort to murdering their kidnapped hostages and they used the technical wizardry of the western rich to bamboozle the oil rich pigs. They have a frigate named Haliburton out there. Go pirates.
RPF , you must be joking? You're right, enemy combatant taken prisoner and held at quantanamo are a perfect comparison to make. You are also a moron. I must have missed the CNN newsflash that said we just picked up all those detainees at GITMO as they were going about their daily lives or better yet delivering huminatarian aid to the US when we snatched them up. I truly do laugh at people like you. Apparently your memory is selective.
I think the idea is to see if there's a bigger picture than the one we're conveniently fed but you really have to care about the issue without prejudice to see it as clearly as possible. If you don't think that soldiers from any country have committed unthinkable acts then I'll stop here.
So if I lose my job, I have trhe right to go out and carjack the first person I see, kidnap them, and then demand a ransom for their release. Thats your argument. You honestly dont see how stupid that is? Lmao, when was the last time the US held foreignors hostage who trespassed in our waters? When have we fired upon a civilian ship and taken the people and held them with no rights? NEVER!
I will take errors in grammar any day over your absolutely rediculous defense of these terrorist. You have NO argument that can defend the hijacking and kidnapping of innocent civilians, NONE. I like the China example, thats funny. If a CIVILIAN chinese ship sailed into US waters, Im sure t we would shoot atthem, hijack their boat and hold them HOSTAGE for a RANSOM! Are you truly that dumb? Are you really trying to make that comparison? You are honestly ignorant and dumb, its that simple.
If you had been bullied by them incessantly and you became desperate, you probably would. Context. No one does something for no reason unless they were completely insane.
Are you kidding me? You are really defending these scumbags? Tell me smart guy, when was the last time china or the US chased , shot at kidnapped and held for ransom any boat that has violated their coastal territory? This has ABSOLUTELY nothing to dowith protecting their waters. It has everything to do with Greed and Money. Theyre not robin hood. These scumbags are attacking ships bring HUMANITARIAN AID to Africa, AND THEIR ATTACKING THEM! You could be the dumbest person on youtube.
Muslim piracy has challenged the USA for over 200 years, capturing merchant ships & holding their crews for ransom.
In 1786 Thomas Jefferson refused to continue to pay the usual islamic "jizya" and sent a "don't fornicate with us" fleet to deal to the North African pirates.
Alas, other presidents never had the balls to do likewise.
At 1:30 you say that all attacks occured within the 12 mile limit, but I searched "pirate attack locations" on google and maps showed 'pirate attacks' outside of that limit.
u know what at least there is some one that speaks the truth "this guy" .just bcuz we dont have a proper goverment doesnt mean u use the somali coastline to waste ur toxic
From some of the valid criticism you are getting, it seems like it would be a good idea for you to get help from an editorial team instead of running a one-man show.
The part of your story that is accurate re overfishing and dumping of toxic waste is true and should cause concern for all of us.Unfortunately each nation is "all for itself" when it comes to protecting and policing its own coastline. Its not the job of NATO or other countries to do what the Somalia government(?) is supposed to be doing.
Most vessels hijacked WERE MORE THAN TWELVE MILES OFF THE COAST of Somalia. I believe the latest U.S. incident, the vessel was 600 km off the coast. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT ASSHOLE
The crew of the Maersk Alabama had been reporting harassment for two weeks. The US Navy wasn't an hour away. If they were, this wouldn't have escalated. They've received millions of dollars over the past few years in ransom. Mogadishu should look like Miami Beach by now.
wow, those somali pirates make me long for the days of our own national flemish heroe pirate "Jean Bart" (may his name live forever in our memory). Only armed with sword and dagger he sunk many protestant vessels mainly dutch and english. This while shouting our national battlecry for then en forever : TO HELL WITH THE PROTESTANTS. For his heroic acts of sinking protestant fleets he was promoted Admiral General by the French king somewhere in the 17th century.
Great! I'd add that these 'pirates' have by now homesteaded the waters they fish in, thus seeing any ship crossing the area as a traspaser. Yet, they would be justified in shooting at them, not hijacking. Still, there far greater culprits in the story. Looking foward to your new book.
idiots get off the somali island other wise you will face what you wanted as result you soon regrets saying oh my foolness so before things got worse leave early thats warning from all african voices who don't like colonozm againg in ther free lands and waters.
They send out navy ships with cannons and missles to stop the pirates then shoot them with sniper rifles why dont they send out some missile frigates blow them up then pilage there village with b2's and punnish them for being pirates it also works for them because they dont get 'radiation poisoning'.
You know, what goes around, comes around. What the brave Somali sailors can't inflict on these bastards, the irradiated fish that are being stolen out of their waters will have their own karma effect on those that purchase them from these thieves. These small-scale operative wars creep me out. You just know that as much as we are disgusted by what we see, we can only imagine what we don't see. We are obliged to ignore Africa until money is involved. I'm sure there's a humanitarian spin.
I appreciate the differing viewpoint and the education on this complex subject, but, frankly, I would have a lot more compassion for the pirate side if they took the "spoils" and, Robin-Hood-like, shared it with the starving populace. But it seems these brigands are enriching themselves primarily, and hell's for the rest of Somalia. Sad tale, really. When the mess gets sorted out many innocent people will suffer and maybe nothing of good will be gained to make up for any injustice done.
I appreciate your differing angle on things, but the idea that the mafia are dumping nuclear wastes in Somali territorial waters has the ring of bullshit about it, which detracts from what you say. I'd like to see a bit more proof.
The whole thing with the Somalia priates is that it is a distraction. The media gets people frustrated over the little stuff and doesn't bother to expose the REAL PIRATETRY going on here at home that the government partakes in.
piracy i believe is what you meant to say. and yes, i agree. at least in usa, we have high treason by our elected leaders and have hijacked and stolen our great grand children's earnings with all this runaway spending and massive printing of money, of which trillions are not accounted for at all.
Wow, you think you and the Huffington Post can romantasize this a bit more? For chist's sake the reason why we don't hear much about this shit is because the "poor little pirates" are paid off by the companies of the ships. If it's their livelihood they are protecting why are they just taking the money and run? Do you think the people of Somalia get some? Why don't the make a political statement while they have the hostages? Let's try to keep this in perspective.
it seems to me to be a non sequitur that if party A deposits nuclear waste or some other form of pollution that it makes it okay for somalis to perform piracy on open seas towards party B. maybe i am confused with what you were saying, but i thought i heard you say these pirates were not pirates but unofficial coast guard protecting their national waters. irrespective of the fact that the nation of somalia is a non-existent entity....
Destruction of property and raping of the ecosystem is the initiation of force.
"Nation" is in reference to the land mass.
And there's nothing wrong with naming an area anyway, in my opinion, there's just something wrong in imposing arbitrary requirements to cross those imaginary lines.
do you even know what a non sequitur is? unless you can address Party A versus Party B connection or actually DISconnection, then your comments do not hold any water.
I hardly think you understand what a non-sequitur is. What that means in english is "it does not follow" There is Party C also, in your example. Party C is the people who are being pirated. Party C is not related in any fashion to Party A. So there is no cause to romanticize PIRACY to party C because of the actions of party A. And I would very much like for you to address that issue instead of slithering away. Address that issue correctly, please. Or retract your idiotic statement.
Perhaps it's circumstantial. If I purposely cause a plane to crash on a deserted island where there is no food, over time the survivors will have to consider chowing down on their fellow passengers. The folks on the menu are innocent but would I not be the culprit for causing the plane to crash?
Well said Stefan! I always wondered about the truth and what was really going on of the coast of Somali. I love the clarity you bring to often unclear main stream news! Thanks again.

Just fisherman policing their own waters? Ask the six month pregnant Ukrainian cook held hostage in Somalian waters...for the past 7 months.

Those people aren't guarding the Somali shores...they are using weapons to capture ships for their own selfish benefit. They're pirates. It's appauling that you would even defend them.

JamesSOCO2006 2 years ago
You don't have grasp of the full facts, i suggest you listen to the history and find out why Somalis started to board westerner ships.
And drop the moral absolutisms.

What I find telling is that if Stefan were to go to Somalia and spew his Anarchist-atheist nonsense, he'd be lined up against a wall and shot.
Sorry Stefan, I've enjoyed some of your work, but this latest piece is truly 'cringeworthy'. Perhaps you could put your bravery to the test and move you and your family from the safety of Mississauga to Somalia (or any other Islamic nation) where you can espouse reason, logic, and philosophy...
...I didn't think so...
JamesSOCO2006 2 years ago
Wait what? Because Stef would be shot by a group of people for his beliefs makes his beliefs invalid?
It sounds more like a threat than a logical argument to me.

empbac , when have American soldiers done what these pirates have done? When has the American navy attacked a huminatarian ship carrying aid and held it hostage, IN THE OPEN SEA. 12 miles my ass, thats funny. Every single hijacking, wow, I wish I could re-write facts like that.
phishinguy2001 2 years ago
Typical liberal , blocking someone who has common sense and things called facts. Anyone who compares these terrorist, thats what they are, to uniformed soldiers, are just plain stupid. Uniformed soldiers, who wear their uniform to identify them as combatants, do NOT INTENTIONALLY attack civilains, hijack their vehicls and hold them for ransom. I will say this again for you halfwits, THERE IS NO COMPARISON TO UNIFORMED SOLDIERS AND CIVILIAN PIRATES who take civilians hostage, NONE.
phishinguy2001 2 years ago
Thing is, when your country literally falls apart, there is no such thing as a uniform. You're asking for the impossible unless you demand that they don't make any attempt to defend themselves at all.
Additionally, I found the same source stef was using. The source does admit that some people are just gangsters.
Point is that you're grouping everyone into the same category. Those who take hostages are not necessarily the same people attempting to prevent exploitation.
wightboy12345 2 years ago

We should do like the pirates, shoot first, ask questions later.
phishinguy2000 2 years ago
Yes, what a shame that those poor Priates were killed by those seals. They didd nothing wrong. Except threaten an innocent mans life who was delivering AID to THEIR country. Stef, your sources are a joke. You have zero proof of anything. I dont care if we dumped every once of trash on their shores, it DOES NOT justify taking innocent civilians hostage at gunpoint. Are you that dumb? Honestly, are you? You have the mentality of a 12 yr old.

stefbot 2 years ago 7
Why is it wrong for Somalis to do it and okay for American soldiers to do it? He's pointing out the double standard. He's not saying it's a good thing to take hostages, just that these pirates aren't what they're being made out to be. AND that all 'civilized' navies are just a bunch of pirates anyway, so there's no real distinction except that one group is viewed as legitimate while the other is not.

Peace2U!!
mrglazedonut2u 2 years ago
I am in the pirates corner quite frankly. The real pirates are the bankers, Wall Street crooks, corrupt politicians and the insurance and mortgage companies which have brought the economic crisis on with their "savage capitalism". Had the world paid attention to the situation in Somalia years ago, these poor pitiful souls have now nothing left to loose.
speciesamused 2 years ago

Apparently your memory is selective.
phishinguy2000 2 years ago
I think the idea is to see if there's a bigger picture than the one we're conveniently fed but you really have to care about the issue without prejudice to see it as clearly as possible. If you don't think that soldiers from any country have committed unthinkable acts then I'll stop here.
DCLugi 2 years ago

Who is the alarmist here?
Methinks the taqiyya is getting to you sir.

Great! I'd add that these 'pirates' have by now homesteaded the waters they fish in, thus seeing any ship crossing the area as a traspaser. Yet, they would be justified in shooting at them, not hijacking. Still, there far greater culprits in the story. Looking foward to your new book.

When the mess gets sorted out many innocent people will suffer and maybe nothing of good will be gained to make up for any injustice done.

it seems to me to be a non sequitur that if party A deposits nuclear waste or some other form of pollution that it makes it okay for somalis to perform piracy on open seas towards party B. maybe i am confused with what you were saying, but i thought i heard you say these pirates were not pirates but unofficial coast guard protecting their national waters. irrespective of the fact that the nation of somalia is a non-existent entity....
vutEwa 2 years ago
It's self-defense.
Destruction of property and raping of the ecosystem is the initiation of force.
"Nation" is in reference to the land mass.
And there's nothing wrong with naming an area anyway, in my opinion, there's just something wrong in imposing arbitrary requirements to cross those imaginary lines.
someweirdgayguy 2 years ago
do you even know what a non sequitur is? unless you can address Party A versus Party B connection or actually DISconnection, then your comments do not hold any water.
vutEwa 2 years ago
Yes, I know what a non-sequitur is.
Party A is the mafia who's dumping toxic waste into Somali coastal regions.
Party B are the Somalis who are being harmed by this activity.
someweirdgayguy 2 years ago
I hardly think you understand what a non-sequitur is. What that means in english is "it does not follow" There is Party C also, in your example. Party C is the people who are being pirated. Party C is not related in any fashion to Party A. So there is no cause to romanticize PIRACY to party C because of the actions of party A. And I would very much like for you to address that issue instead of slithering away. Address that issue correctly, please. Or retract your idiotic statement.
vutEwa 2 years ago
Perhaps it's circumstantial. If I purposely cause a plane to crash on a deserted island where there is no food, over time the survivors will have to consider chowing down on their fellow passengers. The folks on the menu are innocent but would I not be the culprit for causing the plane to crash?
