The only problem with your logic is that Bullwhip Guy was yelling at religious people.
Religious people going to worship, and religious people who were supposed to help people worship.
Bullhorn Guy yells at random people on the street. A mixture of religions, lifestyles, and beliefs.
Bullwhip Guy didn't yell at people on the street. Bullwhip Guy loved people on the street and yelled at people in the temple who were getting in the way of people who wanted to worship.
I understand the distinction, however the problem is the degree to which Rob Bell dismissed the Bullhorn guy. Bell decided to attack the words being used such as, "sin," "hell," "judgment," etc. instead of the method per say. Bell attacked the message as well as the messenger.

Jesus turned away more then anyone that has ever used a bull horn. Jesus isn't interested in half surrenders. It's all or nothing and just like the Rich Young Ruller was turned away because the cost was to dearly. So is the way that most people go when faced w/ the True Jesus. People who offer up this idol that they call Jesus isn't doing anybody any good. It would be better for people to go play golf, get drunk, have all the sex they want then to not follow Christ full heartedly.
The rich young ruler was not 'turned away' by the brashness of Jesus. The rich young rule turned HIMSELF away from Christ.
One of the best lines in the Bible leads up to this self destructive turn in Mark 10:21 "Jesus looked at him and loved him.." Doesn't sound much like a Bullwhip Christ or a Bullhorn Christ.

People who do open air preaching are only yelling so that their voice can be projected. I guess Peter was wrong in Acts 2 for open air preaching. Maybe even Paul in Acts 17. Most of the poeple that Paul preached to scoffed & ignored what Paul was saying. We can't say that because walk away upset or hating God it's because thr truth has revealed them as they are Sinner, God Hating, and so on. Do you know how much love it takes to talk to people who hate you with the hope they'll repent?

How many times in the gospel of Matthew does Jesus gather people together and SIT DOWN to teach. He is inviting people into a safe non-threatening place to learn what he has to say. It's a place where we have to lean in really hard to hear his voice.
When you speak the truth you don't have to shout bro.
Jesus had to project His voice. It was the common practice of public speaking. Jesus did threaten people. "You will like wise perish." Jesus was constantly having people count the cost of following Him and the cost if they didn't.
Certainly his words are challenging, the point is that the posture and delivery is not like Bullwhip guy unless he is talking to people who should know better in his own house.
Take a look in the book. Does he stand and shout or sit down?
One Jesus will shout one day "For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first." -I The 4:16. "And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit."-Mat 27:5. You use the word yell I use the word project. Either way Jesus did both when He spoke to large crowds. I'm not saying that you constantly Yell but it is find to be like Peter on Pentacost.
Did I ever say that you have to yell all the time? NO, but to say that Jesus never yelled at any one (or projected His voice) is foolish. Jesus had to project His voice in order for 5,000 men not including woman and children to hear them. None the less this vid is more what mesg is being "preached" not how it is being preached. I bet you believe in telling people they have a God shaped whole that only Jesus can fill. Nothing on Repentance, Judgment, Mercy. Just God loves them the way they are.
Jesus feeds the 5000 in Luke chapter 9 if you want to check it out.
Jesus tells his disciples to have the people sit down in groups of 50. Hmmmmmm...
Do you think that maybe he DOES NOT WANT TO SHOUT?
The word LOVE is used 291 times in the NT (REPENT 25 times). I am not ashamed of the word. Jesus uses it quite frequently and warns that those who are ashamed of his words will be ashamed when he comes again.
DO YOU UNDERSTAND ANY DIFERENT WORDS THAN OTHERWISE?
WHY AM I YELLING? BECAUSE YOU HEATHENS DONT UNDERSTAND OTHERWISE ? WELL THATS YOUR LOGIC!
WHY IF I DONT YELL AT YOU YOU DONT GET IT HELLSPAWN! WHY REPENT REPENT WHY LETS USE RELIGIOUS WORDS SANCTIFY YOURSELF , USE RHEMA AND LOGOS AND TRINITY. DOCTERNAL!
How can a pagan like him even think he knows anything of Christianity.
What a loser. Hes a Creep.
If any of you want to see if the BIble is true, just look around you around the world. ITs all proof of whats in there. Bullwhip Guy is clearly a stupid, stubborn man who doesn't know what hes talking about.
You guys are not getting it. This video is exposing the errant teachings of Rob Bell. You have to see Rob Bell's Nooma video "Bullhorn Guy" to get it.
I would bet that people who come to the knowledge of God's grace, love, and forgiveness through bullhorn guys are the exception and not the rule. Too often in our practices and even political policies, we make the exception the rule. I celebrate those who were reached by bullhorn guy. But I guarantee that for every person reached by bullhorn guy there are hundreds of others turned away.
I don't think this video is defending the bullhorn guy. The main problem with bullhorn guy is that he proclaims hell without making it reasonable. He doesn't proclaim the law of God, or the grace of Jesus. I think the problem with Rob Bell's nooma video on Bullhorn guy is that he (Bell) attacks him (bullhorn guy) for a different reason. Rob Bell thinks that it's wrong to proclaim sin and hell, etc. That's not the problem with the bullhorn guy, but Bell thinks it is. This vid exposes that folly.
I see this video equating the bullhorn guys methods to the methods of Jesus. I see Bell rediscovering the 1st century Jewish understanding of hell versus platonic philosophical understanding of hell. The picture and definition found in Dante's Inferno; that has become so popular and misleading. The same hell that bullhorn guy is preaching. Hell is a current and future reality...not a place as if to say it is a location. Now, i know you can find verses about Jesus preparing a place, but this is
marriage language not an actual place. God will bring about a restoration..a renewed heaven and earth. Even the Bible Answer Man preaches this. Just as hell is a current and future reality...so is the Kingdom of God/Heaven. Let us leave behind the "Left Behind" philosophy that is so confusing and unBiblical (again more influenced by Plato than Jesus)and embrace and enter into the Kingdom now that will one day come in it's fullness...amen
In Phil 1:18, Paul said, "But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.
That is as long as the true Jesus is being preached. If a person preached Law, Sin, Repentence, Judgment, Forgiveness (all of these) And their motives aren't right it doesn't matter. But when we neglect the fullness of the Gospel then we are not preaching the Gospel therfore it doesn't matter how good are intentions are we are doing no good what so ever.
You don't see Jesus whipping sinners or going into the bar districts and turning over tables. I'd like to see bullhorn guy show up at our churches and remind us who we are and called to be in CHrist. I welcome some bullhorn and bullwhip in my life. I don't know about you, but I need it! I struggle to love the sinners like Jesus did...see i don't even put myself in that category. I want to be like Jesus, but only Jesus has righteous anger. Bottom line:
Bullwhip guy is lashing out at sinners who are confused and for the most part have a hard time believing the truth of GOd's love and grace in Jesus is real. (obviously there are some in that audience who wouldn't accept Christ's love, grace, forgiveness, even if he died for them...wait he did die for them :)).
Wow-let's not forget that we are talking about two completely different audiences. Bullwhip guy is talking to the religious leaders (system) and those claiming to have a corner on the Truth of God's love.
He was unbelievably frustrated with people who use the church for their own agendas. I don't think our place as Christians is to produce "scathing" rebuttals of each others' arguments. It's a big world out there--why not try putting our efforts into something a little more worthwhile for the coming of Christ's kingdom?
Do you realize that it is hypocritical of you to say that of this video, and not of Rob Bell? He is the one that sells a ten min video (for more than a dollar a min) to rebut people standing on a corner trying to share the gospel!
They're telling people how much God hates them for being sinners. God doesn't hate them for being sinners. God doesn't hate--period. As we read in one of John's letters, God is pure love. Granted, all are sinners who fall short of the glory of God. But screaming at people walking by doesn't "convict them." It only makes them angry and turns them away from Christ.
Proverbs 6:16-19 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: [17] A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, [18] An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, [19] A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
You are wrong, brother. God hates NO ONE. God hates the ACTIONS. God hates lies, injustice, and hatred. Yes, God hates hatred. Because he has told us directly to love one another as he loves us.
Wrong again. The sinner willingly walks away from God. Hell is the result of the choice to reject God's grace that He freely offers us. God hates the sin; the sinner, seeing that God does not approve of the sinners actions, willingly turns from God's face, rejecting the Cornerstone. Don't tell me that is not biblical, and do not accuse me of having a "self-made" god.
You are willfully neglecting scripture though...I'm not making this up out of the air. I showed you were it says that God hates certain people but you have either not bothered to read it, or you have willfully chosen to ignore it. There are other passages that talk about the same thing...for instance God loved Jacob but "hated" Esau.
theycallme, you are ignoring the Bible. How can you say that God doesn't hate anyone in the face of the Scriptures? It seems like you are willfully blind. Please let the plain words of the text shape your theology, and not your, or anyone's, opinions. Mal 2:16 "For I hate divorce," says the LORD, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with wrong," says the LORD of hosts.
theycallme, what you are doing is making a straw-man argument. You (and Rob Bell) are condemning every street preacher based upon your very unsubstantiated, generalized descriptions of "them." Ironically, as you condemn us for taking issue with the specific teachings of Bell, you take issue with every street preacher based on fluff. If ever there was an example of taking the log out of your own eye. . .
But then again, you're making the argumentative fallacy when you lump Bell, myself, and "all of us" together because we don't share your views of Christianity. I don't condemn all street preachers--that would be generalizing. I just think that, based on what I have seen of "them," certain methods are highly ineffective in bringing people into a relationship with Christ.
Perhaps "condemn," was a poor choice, sorry; however, you "repudiated" every street preacher, not just in your previous post, but in this one as well. About "straw-maning" Bell, I am not. In fact, for you to think that shows that you don't understand what a straw-man is. . .
and I guess the real thing that I take issue with is twk373's comment: "It wouldn't be so bad if the Emergents and other post-Christians stopped pretending to be...Christian."
I would agree that it is a generalization; however, the overwhelming majority of emergents that I have read/talked with/listened to are not Christian. Usually they are Newagers using Christian terms. I'm sure that we will disagree . . .well wait a sec . . . In your view is everyone a Christian who says that they are?
Absolutely not. However, I don't think anyone can call someone else out on whether the are a "true" believer or not. If someone says they are a Christian, then it is the description of a relationship between them and God. I personally don't consider myself an emergent, although I think the term is thrown around rather loosely these days. I consider myself progressive, but I'm not trying to tear down the church as we know it.
I partially agree. Consider 1 Cor 5 & 6; Paul tells us that there are "so-called" Christians, and that if you are living a certain kind of life, then you are not going to enter the Kingdom. . .
. . . So, if I meet somoene who says that they are a Christian, but is living in unrepentent adultery, then I should warn that person that there is no hope, unless he turns back to Jesus. Do you agree?
Eh. Sort of. I don't think the Christian's calling is to "warn" anyone. I think the whole point of Christianity is to tell them of the HOPE they have in Christ. It's not to say "You're damned unless you do this," it is to say "You're saved--now start living like this." THAT's the gospel. People should know that the wages of sin is death, but that should not be our focal point of preaching the gospel.
I'm sorry, but to equate drinking sodas (which I don't, by the way) with adultery is ignorant of the Scriptures. Read 1 Cor 6:15-20. But I would agree that any kind of willful rebellion would lead to the same place; however, drinking sodas is not rebellious.
As far as being called to warn, I agree that the warning is only part of sharing the gospel, not the focus, but please consider this verse: Jas 5:19 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back,
Jas 5:20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
But does this specifically condone publicly calling people out about sins they may or may not have committed? I'm sorry, but I'm not going to post anymore. You called me ignorant of scriptures (which I am not), and I think it's safe to say that we should just agree to disagree.
Thanks for the stimulating conversation. God bless you, brother.
I am sorry; I did not mean it as an insult, but as an honest assessment. If you thought that adultery/sexual sin was the same as any other kin sin, then you were "ignorant" of that passage. Perhaps I should have used "unaware" or "forgot." I thank you for the discussion as well. May God bless us both as we try to better understand Him.
It is if it causes you to become a slave to it. We are specifically told not to be a slave to anything but Christ. (Good for you for not drinking them).
Here are some verse to chew on: 1Co 5:11 But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person. . . 1Co 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,
1Co 6:10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.
By the way, I've had my fair share of encounters with street preachers, and no, I'm not "taking issue with every street preacher based on fluff." From my experience, people aren't very likely to willingly come to Jesus (which is the point--willingly is the keyword here) when someone just as sinful as them tries to publicly "convict them of their sins." That is the general purpose of street preachers, right?
I will admit, some street preachers may be successful--the Gideons are a good example. Every semester when they visit the campus at the college I attend, I'm always greeted by them with a New Testament and a "God bless you, brother." This is fine. But when people begin to spread the gospel of hatred, THAT's where I take issue.
I think this is where the problem is. Handing someone a Bible is not "preaching"; neither is trying to convict someone of their sin, I agree. However; warning people of the eternal torment that awaits all of us, if we don't receive Jesus, is preaching the gospel. Likewise, defining sin is an important part of that. Additionally, wouldn't you agree that if we really loved people, then we would warn them about their fate? . . .
That's where we differ. Warning people of the consequences of what happens when we don't receive Jesus is just that: warning people of consequences. There is no gospel (literally "good news"). The gospel is that the wall between God and humankind has been broken down, death has been defeated, and Jesus has died for our sins, whether we deserve it or not--we are atoned for, whether we receive it or not. Going to Hell is a willful decision to place yourself outside of a relationship with Christ.
No, I agree. I was attempting to imply that if the option of receiving Jesus had been presented, then the gospel had been preached. Wouldn't you agree, though, that we can't properly share the gospel without sharing why Christ had/chose to die?
People don't need to first hear that they are sinners--just like on a first date you wouldn't pick out all the things that you disliked about the person you were with. It's about showing them the beauty of a relationship with Jesus, and drawing them away from the sinful human nature to a higher moral plane, one on which Jesus calls us to live our daily lives.
I am already a believer, but I know that the simple "God bless you" from the Gideons warms my heart. I know that I feel God with me when I look at my broken life and realize that I have no purpose without Christ. And I believe that Christ wants us to spread not condemnation, but instead his true gospel of the possibility of intimacy between God and His creation through Jesus.
However, it must be admitted that the general conception of a street preacher goes on this latter notion. If you want to throw around the "take the log out of your own eye" verse, even you have to agree that those who stand on street corners to "convict" others with harsh words are operating under the VERY SAME hypocrisy.
Christ welcomes sinners with open arms--and THEN, once they willingly come to Him, it is in hindsight that they view the life they left to follow Jesus--it is GOD who convicts us of our sins, not man. As to me being hypocritical...well, aren't we all at times? I recognize the danger in following a personality. But you're also forgetting a crucial part of the "Bullhorn" video.
Bell says that God loves you exactly the way you are and yet "loves you way too much to let you stay that way." It is through His conviction of our sins that we are called to live better lives--to "go and sin no more."
By the way, the company that makes and sells the NOOMA videos is a not-for-profit organization that uses some of the money they receive to produce the videos and then donates the rest to charity.
One more thing--the speaker in THIS video is using a biting form of sarcasm (the description itself calls it "scathing"), which is warned against in the New Testament. Sarcasm is unwholesome and should be put away from the believer (See Phillippians 2:3 and Eph 5:7, et al).
This speaker makes fun of Rob Bell by portraying a warped mirror-image of him. Jesus himself said that we should always strive to make ourselves clear--this includes our rebuttals of what Christians perceive as untrue teaching. "Let your yes be yes and your no be no," Jesus says. The satire this speaker uses is poisonous to the heart.
Bro, again you are being hypocritical in your analysis. Bell makes Bullhorn-guy look like a dork. So I hope you rebuke him accordingly. The only think that is "warped" about the guy in this video is his words, and that is done to highlight the point that Bell's analysis is a joke!
But Bell does not mock the bullhorn guy by satiring him, or by sarcastically mimicking him. He simply points out that street preachers yelling about how God hates all us "sinners" is not very effective at creating an understanding about what it means to be in a relationship with the living God.
If I didn't think that Bullhorn was so awful, I would recommend that you re-watch it. Bell mocks Bullhorn Guy when he speaks of the possibility that he might die that day (2:10). He also portrays him as a waddling, forgetful, angry, thief, and the song at the end also calls him a "creep." But no, Bell is completely kind and fair.
Additionally, Bell is mocking Jesus when he mocks the possibility that someone might die tonight, because He taught that before Bullhorn Guy. In fact, God calls a person who thinks that death is a long way off, a "fool" (Luke 12:20). In fact, read Luke 12:16-59, especially 20, 36-39, 45-48.
Yeah Rob should watch this, oh wait this is not his style. Rob is all about "Love", of course today's love is nothing comapared to the love that Christ did for us. Jesus laid His own life down and didn't say anything (He could have). That is LOVE. Sacrificial Love.
"if I'm loving someone with an agenda, it really isn't love, is it?" lmfao, you sir do have an agenda...

We must continue to mark and avoid false teachers such as Bell, Mclaren, and Pagitt.
2 Corinthians 11:13-15

Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

DinoDude06 3 years ago
Dino- Please open your Bible. Does the content of the sermon on the mount sound like stuff that is shouted at people?
How many times does the one that we take our name from sit down and teach?
We don't get to fill in the details with stuff we wish was there. You gotta live with what is in the book...
how many times does he sit down and teach?
See chapters 5, 13, 15, 24, and 26.
The truth will set you free...
bones4610 3 years ago
Did I ever say that you have to yell all the time? NO, but to say that Jesus never yelled at any one (or projected His voice) is foolish. Jesus had to project His voice in order for 5,000 men not including woman and children to hear them. None the less this vid is more what mesg is being "preached" not how it is being preached. I bet you believe in telling people they have a God shaped whole that only Jesus can fill. Nothing on Repentance, Judgment, Mercy. Just God loves them the way they are.
DinoDude06 3 years ago
Dino do you read your Bible?
Jesus feeds the 5000 in Luke chapter 9 if you want to check it out.
Jesus tells his disciples to have the people sit down in groups of 50. Hmmmmmm...
Do you think that maybe he DOES NOT WANT TO SHOUT?
The word LOVE is used 291 times in the NT (REPENT 25 times). I am not ashamed of the word. Jesus uses it quite frequently and warns that those who are ashamed of his words will be ashamed when he comes again.
Are you ashamed to use the word LOVE Dino?
bones4610 3 years ago
HEY DOES THIS EFFECT WHAT I AM SAYING??
DOCTERNAL!
now wasnt that silly?

Bullhorn Is Garbage!
How can a pagan like him even think he knows anything of Christianity.
What a loser. Hes a Creep.
If any of you want to see if the BIble is true, just look around you around the world. ITs all proof of whats in there. Bullwhip Guy is clearly a stupid, stubborn man who doesn't know what hes talking about.
javasmcmillan 3 years ago
You guys are not getting it. This video is exposing the errant teachings of Rob Bell. You have to see Rob Bell's Nooma video "Bullhorn Guy" to get it.
gtrjunky 3 years ago
I would bet that people who come to the knowledge of God's grace, love, and forgiveness through bullhorn guys are the exception and not the rule. Too often in our practices and even political policies, we make the exception the rule. I celebrate those who were reached by bullhorn guy. But I guarantee that for every person reached by bullhorn guy there are hundreds of others turned away.
caseykapple 4 years ago
I don't think this video is defending the bullhorn guy. The main problem with bullhorn guy is that he proclaims hell without making it reasonable. He doesn't proclaim the law of God, or the grace of Jesus. I think the problem with Rob Bell's nooma video on Bullhorn guy is that he (Bell) attacks him (bullhorn guy) for a different reason. Rob Bell thinks that it's wrong to proclaim sin and hell, etc. That's not the problem with the bullhorn guy, but Bell thinks it is. This vid exposes that folly.
cowboy4ev2 4 years ago
I see this video equating the bullhorn guys methods to the methods of Jesus. I see Bell rediscovering the 1st century Jewish understanding of hell versus platonic philosophical understanding of hell. The picture and definition found in Dante's Inferno; that has become so popular and misleading. The same hell that bullhorn guy is preaching. Hell is a current and future reality...not a place as if to say it is a location. Now, i know you can find verses about Jesus preparing a place, but this is
caseykapple 4 years ago
marriage language not an actual place. God will bring about a restoration..a renewed heaven and earth. Even the Bible Answer Man preaches this. Just as hell is a current and future reality...so is the Kingdom of God/Heaven. Let us leave behind the "Left Behind" philosophy that is so confusing and unBiblical (again more influenced by Plato than Jesus)and embrace and enter into the Kingdom now that will one day come in it's fullness...amen
caseykapple 4 years ago
Hell is not a place? Pro 15:24 The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.
Hell is always described as a place. I bet you don't believe Heaven is a place either like Rob "teaches."
Joh 14:2 -In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
Joh 14:3 - And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
DinoDude06 3 years ago
Bottom line:
In Phil 1:18, Paul said, "But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.
caseykapple 4 years ago

Bottom line:
caseykapple 4 years ago
Bullwhip guy is lashing out at sinners who are confused and for the most part have a hard time believing the truth of GOd's love and grace in Jesus is real. (obviously there are some in that audience who wouldn't accept Christ's love, grace, forgiveness, even if he died for them...wait he did die for them :)).
caseykapple 4 years ago
I meant Bullhorn guy not Bullwhip guy is lashing out at sinners...
caseykapple 4 years ago
Wow-let's not forget that we are talking about two completely different audiences. Bullwhip guy is talking to the religious leaders (system) and those claiming to have a corner on the Truth of God's love.

I'm sorry, I wasn't going to post anymore, but it's spelled "heresy." If you're going to speak out against it, be sure to know how to spell it.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
He was unbelievably frustrated with people who use the church for their own agendas. I don't think our place as Christians is to produce "scathing" rebuttals of each others' arguments. It's a big world out there--why not try putting our efforts into something a little more worthwhile for the coming of Christ's kingdom?
theycallmeju 4 years ago
Do you realize that it is hypocritical of you to say that of this video, and not of Rob Bell? He is the one that sells a ten min video (for more than a dollar a min) to rebut people standing on a corner trying to share the gospel!
greekgoof 4 years ago
The problem is, they're not sharing the gospel.
They're telling people how much God hates them for being sinners. God doesn't hate them for being sinners. God doesn't hate--period. As we read in one of John's letters, God is pure love. Granted, all are sinners who fall short of the glory of God. But screaming at people walking by doesn't "convict them." It only makes them angry and turns them away from Christ.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
Proverbs 6:16-19 These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: [17] A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, [18] An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, [19] A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
cowboy4ev2 4 years ago
I'm sorry, but I fail to see your point...
theycallmeju 4 years ago
My point is that there are people God hates...a false witness and he that soweth discord are two examples from this passage.
cowboy4ev2 4 years ago
You are wrong, brother. God hates NO ONE. God hates the ACTIONS. God hates lies, injustice, and hatred. Yes, God hates hatred. Because he has told us directly to love one another as he loves us.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
You're free to believe that, but know it's not scriptural, it's a self-made God. God doesn't send the sin to hell, he sends the sinners.
cowboy4ev2 4 years ago
Wrong again. The sinner willingly walks away from God. Hell is the result of the choice to reject God's grace that He freely offers us. God hates the sin; the sinner, seeing that God does not approve of the sinners actions, willingly turns from God's face, rejecting the Cornerstone. Don't tell me that is not biblical, and do not accuse me of having a "self-made" god.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
You are willfully neglecting scripture though...I'm not making this up out of the air. I showed you were it says that God hates certain people but you have either not bothered to read it, or you have willfully chosen to ignore it. There are other passages that talk about the same thing...for instance God loved Jacob but "hated" Esau.
cowboy4ev2 4 years ago
theycallme, you are ignoring the Bible. How can you say that God doesn't hate anyone in the face of the Scriptures? It seems like you are willfully blind. Please let the plain words of the text shape your theology, and not your, or anyone's, opinions. Mal 2:16 "For I hate divorce," says the LORD, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with wrong," says the LORD of hosts.
greekgoof 4 years ago
theycallme, what you are doing is making a straw-man argument. You (and Rob Bell) are condemning every street preacher based upon your very unsubstantiated, generalized descriptions of "them." Ironically, as you condemn us for taking issue with the specific teachings of Bell, you take issue with every street preacher based on fluff. If ever there was an example of taking the log out of your own eye. . .
greekgoof 4 years ago
But then again, you're making the argumentative fallacy when you lump Bell, myself, and "all of us" together because we don't share your views of Christianity. I don't condemn all street preachers--that would be generalizing. I just think that, based on what I have seen of "them," certain methods are highly ineffective in bringing people into a relationship with Christ.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
Perhaps "condemn," was a poor choice, sorry; however, you "repudiated" every street preacher, not just in your previous post, but in this one as well. About "straw-maning" Bell, I am not. In fact, for you to think that shows that you don't understand what a straw-man is. . .
greekgoof 4 years ago
wait a sec, I didn't see one of your posts, sorry.
greekgoof 4 years ago
and I guess the real thing that I take issue with is twk373's comment: "It wouldn't be so bad if the Emergents and other post-Christians stopped pretending to be...Christian."
That is most certainly generalizing.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
I would agree that it is a generalization; however, the overwhelming majority of emergents that I have read/talked with/listened to are not Christian. Usually they are Newagers using Christian terms. I'm sure that we will disagree . . .well wait a sec . . . In your view is everyone a Christian who says that they are?
greekgoof 4 years ago
Absolutely not. However, I don't think anyone can call someone else out on whether the are a "true" believer or not. If someone says they are a Christian, then it is the description of a relationship between them and God. I personally don't consider myself an emergent, although I think the term is thrown around rather loosely these days. I consider myself progressive, but I'm not trying to tear down the church as we know it.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
I partially agree. Consider 1 Cor 5 & 6; Paul tells us that there are "so-called" Christians, and that if you are living a certain kind of life, then you are not going to enter the Kingdom. . .
greekgoof 4 years ago
. . . So, if I meet somoene who says that they are a Christian, but is living in unrepentent adultery, then I should warn that person that there is no hope, unless he turns back to Jesus. Do you agree?
greekgoof 4 years ago
Eh. Sort of. I don't think the Christian's calling is to "warn" anyone. I think the whole point of Christianity is to tell them of the HOPE they have in Christ. It's not to say "You're damned unless you do this," it is to say "You're saved--now start living like this." THAT's the gospel. People should know that the wages of sin is death, but that should not be our focal point of preaching the gospel.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
A sin is a sin is a sin, and--be it adultery or addiction (do you drink sodas?)--we all fall short of the glory of God.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
I'm sorry, but to equate drinking sodas (which I don't, by the way) with adultery is ignorant of the Scriptures. Read 1 Cor 6:15-20. But I would agree that any kind of willful rebellion would lead to the same place; however, drinking sodas is not rebellious.
greekgoof 4 years ago
As far as being called to warn, I agree that the warning is only part of sharing the gospel, not the focus, but please consider this verse: Jas 5:19 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back,
Jas 5:20 let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
greekgoof 4 years ago
But does this specifically condone publicly calling people out about sins they may or may not have committed? I'm sorry, but I'm not going to post anymore. You called me ignorant of scriptures (which I am not), and I think it's safe to say that we should just agree to disagree.
Thanks for the stimulating conversation. God bless you, brother.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
I am sorry; I did not mean it as an insult, but as an honest assessment. If you thought that adultery/sexual sin was the same as any other kin sin, then you were "ignorant" of that passage. Perhaps I should have used "unaware" or "forgot." I thank you for the discussion as well. May God bless us both as we try to better understand Him.
greekgoof 4 years ago
It is if it causes you to become a slave to it. We are specifically told not to be a slave to anything but Christ. (Good for you for not drinking them).
theycallmeju 4 years ago
Here are some verse to chew on: 1Co 5:11 But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person. . . 1Co 6:9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,
1Co 6:10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.
greekgoof 4 years ago
Also read Matt 7.
greekgoof 4 years ago
Don't think I am an idiot. In fact, you are committing Ad Hominem by claiming that I must nut know what a straw man argument is.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
**not.
Nah. It's alright. Don't worry about it.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
By the way, I've had my fair share of encounters with street preachers, and no, I'm not "taking issue with every street preacher based on fluff." From my experience, people aren't very likely to willingly come to Jesus (which is the point--willingly is the keyword here) when someone just as sinful as them tries to publicly "convict them of their sins." That is the general purpose of street preachers, right?
theycallmeju 4 years ago
I will admit, some street preachers may be successful--the Gideons are a good example. Every semester when they visit the campus at the college I attend, I'm always greeted by them with a New Testament and a "God bless you, brother." This is fine. But when people begin to spread the gospel of hatred, THAT's where I take issue.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
I think this is where the problem is. Handing someone a Bible is not "preaching"; neither is trying to convict someone of their sin, I agree. However; warning people of the eternal torment that awaits all of us, if we don't receive Jesus, is preaching the gospel. Likewise, defining sin is an important part of that. Additionally, wouldn't you agree that if we really loved people, then we would warn them about their fate? . . .
greekgoof 4 years ago
That's where we differ. Warning people of the consequences of what happens when we don't receive Jesus is just that: warning people of consequences. There is no gospel (literally "good news"). The gospel is that the wall between God and humankind has been broken down, death has been defeated, and Jesus has died for our sins, whether we deserve it or not--we are atoned for, whether we receive it or not. Going to Hell is a willful decision to place yourself outside of a relationship with Christ.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
No, I agree. I was attempting to imply that if the option of receiving Jesus had been presented, then the gospel had been preached. Wouldn't you agree, though, that we can't properly share the gospel without sharing why Christ had/chose to die?
greekgoof 4 years ago
People don't need to first hear that they are sinners--just like on a first date you wouldn't pick out all the things that you disliked about the person you were with. It's about showing them the beauty of a relationship with Jesus, and drawing them away from the sinful human nature to a higher moral plane, one on which Jesus calls us to live our daily lives.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
What better way to show the beauty of Jesus, than to articulate how much we don't deserve Him!
greekgoof 4 years ago
On the other hand, I agree wholeheartedly that "handing someone a Bible is not preaching," in itself, although there is plenty of potential.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
I agree.
greekgoof 4 years ago
I am already a believer, but I know that the simple "God bless you" from the Gideons warms my heart. I know that I feel God with me when I look at my broken life and realize that I have no purpose without Christ. And I believe that Christ wants us to spread not condemnation, but instead his true gospel of the possibility of intimacy between God and His creation through Jesus.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
However, it must be admitted that the general conception of a street preacher goes on this latter notion. If you want to throw around the "take the log out of your own eye" verse, even you have to agree that those who stand on street corners to "convict" others with harsh words are operating under the VERY SAME hypocrisy.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
Christ welcomes sinners with open arms--and THEN, once they willingly come to Him, it is in hindsight that they view the life they left to follow Jesus--it is GOD who convicts us of our sins, not man. As to me being hypocritical...well, aren't we all at times? I recognize the danger in following a personality. But you're also forgetting a crucial part of the "Bullhorn" video.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
Bell says that God loves you exactly the way you are and yet "loves you way too much to let you stay that way." It is through His conviction of our sins that we are called to live better lives--to "go and sin no more."
By the way, the company that makes and sells the NOOMA videos is a not-for-profit organization that uses some of the money they receive to produce the videos and then donates the rest to charity.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
One more thing--the speaker in THIS video is using a biting form of sarcasm (the description itself calls it "scathing"), which is warned against in the New Testament. Sarcasm is unwholesome and should be put away from the believer (See Phillippians 2:3 and Eph 5:7, et al).
theycallmeju 4 years ago
This speaker makes fun of Rob Bell by portraying a warped mirror-image of him. Jesus himself said that we should always strive to make ourselves clear--this includes our rebuttals of what Christians perceive as untrue teaching. "Let your yes be yes and your no be no," Jesus says. The satire this speaker uses is poisonous to the heart.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
Bro, again you are being hypocritical in your analysis. Bell makes Bullhorn-guy look like a dork. So I hope you rebuke him accordingly. The only think that is "warped" about the guy in this video is his words, and that is done to highlight the point that Bell's analysis is a joke!
greekgoof 4 years ago
But Bell does not mock the bullhorn guy by satiring him, or by sarcastically mimicking him. He simply points out that street preachers yelling about how God hates all us "sinners" is not very effective at creating an understanding about what it means to be in a relationship with the living God.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
If I didn't think that Bullhorn was so awful, I would recommend that you re-watch it. Bell mocks Bullhorn Guy when he speaks of the possibility that he might die that day (2:10). He also portrays him as a waddling, forgetful, angry, thief, and the song at the end also calls him a "creep." But no, Bell is completely kind and fair.
greekgoof 4 years ago
Additionally, Bell is mocking Jesus when he mocks the possibility that someone might die tonight, because He taught that before Bullhorn Guy. In fact, God calls a person who thinks that death is a long way off, a "fool" (Luke 12:20). In fact, read Luke 12:16-59, especially 20, 36-39, 45-48.
greekgoof 4 years ago 2
He is trying to point out how ineffectual the method is - not the message.
What I hate about Bell is how he helps the poor and marginalized! Can you believe that?
jaxsonmommy 4 years ago
The thing is--you've missed the point.
Jesus was angry at the people who were misusing the church. They were turning a house of prayer and a temple of God into a marketplace.
Christ wasn't standing on a street corner screaming about the wickedness of God's creation.
theycallmeju 4 years ago
