  • After some Google Earth research, I think the mirror flashes are 2.86 miles away and 3642 feet above the camera, at a bearing of 149° magnetic ( 133° absolute).

    I'm assuming:

    Camera: latitude 46.89463° N longitude 121.27421° W elevation 3327 ft

    Peak: 46.854444° N 121.258889° W 6969 ft

I used an internet search to locate Camp Fife, Yakima Cty WA,

and heywhatsthat to get a horizon profile (to match the peaks) and Google Earth horizon perimeter.

  • Did those fellows leave from your vantage point? If so, how long did it take them to reach the peak?

Former Scout, Troop 31, Frankfort, KY

  • @Brandtalones Yes they did, they left I believe around 6am, and it took most of the day hiking there and back.

  • Hey cool to see my old troop is still having fun.

  • cool man

  • I see a flash at about 0:22 and at about 0:26 in the video, at the very apex of the peak. Video doesn't have the dynamic range to show the brilliance one sees with the naked eye, and the bright sky backdrop does not help. Video taken from the peak of the camp flashes against the dark woods might show better. What size and type of mirror was being used on the peak, and what was the range? There is a 2x/year BSA event called "Operation On Target" for peak-peak mirror signaling.

  • It's a lot easier to see the flashes when you use YouTube's "Full screen" and "HD" options for this video. I see about 14 very bright flashes, and many smaller ones, with those settings.
