they need to watch their vowel modification on some of the words, but everything else was perfect. check out The Citrus Singers' rendition of this song, its a good example of the amazing dynamics you can do with a bigger group.
This thing that amazed me about this is that the recording quality was quite bad with the background noises, etc. but was still so beautiful. It shows that the music is the most important thing, not the packaging and trappings.
If it is possible to become addicted to a song, I have become addicted to this performance by SIM. My first impression was that it was too slow and the video was such poor quality that it was annoying to watch. So I began to close my eyes and just listen. I quickly realized that the slower tempo was exactly right for a prayer, added to the reverence and made it easier to focus on the poignant lyrics. The balance and hauntingly beautiful harmony are exquisite. Kudos on a great performance!
This men's choir has the best balance i've ever heard in a mens choir and this is the best version of this song i've ever come across. i am sure you are one of the only groups that can ever get away with doing this song so slowly without becoming monotonous. It is extremely emotional, and you can't even see any faces. This is music.
Not even a good recording but like aldave14 said easily the best sounding group to sing this on youtube so far! Great work! It's easy to just make it sound like a bunch of sounds bashing against each other between 3:02 and 3:27 but you guys did a great job!
A little slow, even for this song. Though I must admit your dynamics are MUCH better than other groups that I've heard sing this song. Many cannot get in their head that this song is metso forte at best.
even though it's slower than usual, i actually really like it. you truly get to hear the rich and beautiful harmonies. so i do like both versions - it's a beautiful song no matter the tempo
This is amazing. We sang it in our choir, and I do prefer it with the high soprano as well, but those boys' voices are heart-wrenching.. Good job. (I can hear the soprano with them in my mind, lol.)
yeah choir sounds awesome but yea the director needs to trust his singers a little more.. i'm a choir person and i love the expressive directors but you gotta give us some credit to feel the music haha
omg...you guys did an AMAZING job!!! so powerful ... made me tear... i remember singing this song with my mixed choir too.. but i must say.. you guys totally brought out the meaning in it.. <3
omg i love this song! i've sang it in two mixed choirs, and i'm about to sing it in my select choir in school! it always gives me a knot in my throat =X It sounds amazing as an all guys arrangment! LOVE IT!
Yes, this is an extremely difficult song to conduct (NOT direct) and to sing. I have performed this song both in high school and as a college music major. As for the conductor, he is VERY distracting. The text is very beautiful and touching when you get the chance to listen instead of watch the conductor. Meter aside, there are many different ways to conduct this song (and others) and show more emotion as a conductor than seen here.
i think they did an amazing job, one of the best recordings on youtube.
as far as the conductor goes, it wasnt that big of a deal. my only criticism of him is that he conducted every-single-individual-word. he could have held back just a little
Hear my choir singing this in Normandy at Omaha Beach...search "ameveritt" or "Omaha beach" "prayer of the children" "normandy" OWC preforms ...what a memorable day.
My school did this. It was really good, but I think yours is better. The balance and emotion is better. The chords are more pronounced too. You can watch it at:
And to the people who say that the conductor is distracting?
This piece is EXTREMELY hard to sing, and without a conductor is pretty much impossible - youd just have a group of guys tryingt o read each others minds.. our group tried it withOUT a conductor.. and we couldnt get the tempo right.
I sang this song at a Harmony Explosion Camp in Clemson this summer... we sang it at a different tempo, and put more emphasis on some parts, especially the chorus, but we sounded a lot like you guys. awesome job.
hi this is men for praise we did this peice as a barborshop quartet u guys are good. u have great dynamics we have to say though bring out the bass a little more will u check out us we are the ones with notes behind us
Wonderful, simply wonderful. My womens choir sang this and it was beautiful then too, but this is simply amazing. You have great blend, and no one voice sticks out, the director on the other hand needs to know how to direct a 4 count beat. Not just the rhythms of the notes themselfs.
Absolutely beautiful. I agree with jayded4life, that the original intended length brings out so much more emotion. My old choir back in my high school days kept it the original length just for this reason.
SCORE! Finally someone sings this song in its intended length format. Too many choirs destroy this song by speeding it up. You guys have awesome tone quality, and are able to "hit" and hold every note. Amazing. This is how Prayer of the Children was meant to be sung. Kurt Bestor would be proud.
