  • 198,096 miles and counting

  • I dont care how bad you think these cars are. i loved mine, and it saved my life. I was in a bad accident with my 99 Taurus. it had 127,000 miles on it and had it in the shop every few months., i was driving home one day and some lady pulled out in front of me while i was traveling 65 mph, and there was little damage done to my Taurus, even though it was still totaled, her 2010 honda was destoryed.

contact me if you want to see pictures of the accident

  • @mhs2011

I actually don't think these cars are bad. After my initial "I have a car" excitement died down I started to hate it, but after a while it grew on me. I miss my Taurus.

  • Nice thing about 'em tho...Plenty of spare parts @ salvage yards...

  • my 98 corolla has over 200,000 miles on it. still runs like a champ.

  • Mine had 138,xxx miles on it as well, lasted from March 2010 to October 24th 2010

  • My 96' G model needed springs in the back and a balljoint. My tranny lost 1st and reverse and the engine quit magically the next day along with the powersteering pump. Never realized what happened but it only cranks, wont starts.

  • I got a 1996 ford taurus G with 138,100 miles, my shocks were bad and i had to rplace them for inspection, check you ball joints too , makes that humming noises, front brakes screech and the power sterring grunts

  • lol My parents had a 1993 Taurus GL, yes I like them, but the one we had broke down all the time. Wire had to be put back on all the time before you could start it, everything was fucked with that car. Not hatin on Tauruses though, I actually love them, but the same can never be said for my parents! lol

  • i got a 1997 with 334 567 km on it has org tranny an motor the best car ive ever had an she still runs strong an i take very good care of it dosent look like it has over 300 000 km on it

  • I had a 1998 up to 79k miles and it was nothing but junk. The most inferior piece of garbage ever. I spent $500 on 1990 740 with couple hundred thousands miles and has about 300k miles not with just couple hundred in it total compare to the thousands I have in repair bills on the taurus. When you go to a shop they were approx same cost to have anything done on either one ($80/hr labor & parts about same b/c how accessible old Volvo parts are b/c popularity online).

  • im the same way about kia's though not a ford person =8/

  • Yea and im one of them that really loves the Taurus. Ive had 2 so far and it keeps getting better for me.

  • The reason for the difference in opinion had a lot to do with the engine. 3.0 Vulcan's were great, but the 3.8's were more problematic: those engines had aluminum head on an iron block, and head gasket technology back then isn't what it is today.

  • what the hell. i must have bought a bad apple ford taurus, because on my 1998 taurus SE, my alternator is under the engine, so whenever i hit a puddle of water, power starts to seize up. lol overall the car is all right, its reliable, but its design is horrible

  • get an early 90s taurus, they had worse problems than later models

  • not to fillabust but 120-150,000 miles isnt much mileage. i had a '86 and a 91 both had tranny trouble but the '86 tranny held together till 145,000 91 lasted 130000. decent engine (3.0) in both but has a funny sound that all 3.0's have like a whining that they ALL have even new

  • i have a 96 gl with the vulcan v6 its not that bad of a car.

    rides good

and great on gas and pretty fast

  • Tauruses are some of the most dependable cars on the road. People hit pot holes and crap and break springs. I have 120000 miles on my 96 and I havent replaced a single thing at all. Oh yeah I am a certified ASE mechanic for 10 years now.

  • the ford taurus is one of the best ford cars out there end of story with over 120,000 on mine and no problems

  • you do know they are on the list of the worst cars ever invented right?

  • i'd like to see your evidence to back that up because i think you're bull shitting. don't get me wrong my 98 taurus is poorly designed, but its still reliable and has decent pick up

  • no they are not the worst car's!

  • Total B/S. I love how you submit a claim with no evidence.

  • thats actually not true

in the US they were best selling for over ten years running

and for the past couple of years continuing through 2010 they are again the best selling

get your facts straight cause even though im not a die hard tarus fan or ford fan for that matter, taurus' r def not on any stupid list

    sorry

  • my 1996 taurus has 150165 miles on it yours should last a while longer

  • Yeah, most of the people who say Tauruses suck have never even driven one...

To People Who Think They Suck: TRY ONE!!!

My parents had a '94 Taurus GL and it got over 225,000 miles on it before the motor mounts broke... before that happend they didn't have to replace anything except regular stuff (windshield wipers, tires, oil, etc.)

  • that things a piece of shit. get a car that will last you a good while.

  • Like your name implies you got something better!!! HAHA

  • Also, my 1996 Taurus G has the AX4S Transmission

My 1995 SHO has the AX4N Transmission.

Difference being is that the S is Sequential and the N is NON-Sequential; in that meaning it can SKIP gears while shifting rather than having to back up through or down through the gears just to get to the right one for engine RPM/Speed...

  • I have a 1996 Taurus G (176k and change)

It has original transmission, bought it used, I beat the hell out of it, hard on brakes, acceleration, get engine RPM's up to at least 5-7k after every stop, purrs like a kitten, runs pretty damn smooth, put in K&N filter..

    I also have a 1995 Taurus SHO.....(202k and change)

Tranny occasionally slips from 1-2 at WOT and won't downshift from OD/D to 2nd above 40MPH. unless I hit the OD button, but then stays in 2nd until button is pressed again.. lol

  • My '96 trans started slipping 1st to 2nd around 90k just regular acceleration. Very common. I'd be curious to know how many miles the car had when you bought it? Bet the trans had already been replaced which would explain why yours has gone 176k during your ownership. Typical lifespan of this trans is 60-100k. That's what most people seem to experience. Loved the car otherwise and everything worked great.

  • I'm at about 140k now and I believe the trans is the original one. I bought it with 97k, so the trans could have already been replaced, but I don't see any signs that is was. There is probably a number on it somewhere that I could match to the VIN but I'm not going to bother.

  • Neh don't bother unless you're really curious. Chances are though it had already been replaced pre-97k miles. You'll probably get another 30-60k or so out of it before the trans starts having problems again and by that point the car will have a ton of miles and it wouldn't be worth replacing.

  • i have a 99 24v taurus, i did have a 97 12v and the tranny went at 110k but that was the only problem engine was great, dont beat on it and it will be fine

  • hey i currently own a '96 Buick Regal, but had a '91, '97 taurus G and GL. The '91, i got used for 1900 with 420k miles on it, and lasted me until 490k (i drive 200-300 miles a day) i bought a new '97 taurus and had all work done at the dealer. the car was problem after problem after problem. brakes died, engined died @ 5k and got fixed. broke again @ 15k and got it fixed. i needed a new head gasket, new brakes, new radio(it broke) and then it broke before i got any thing.

  • Continues) traded it in for $1000, less then a year later (in 'december '97) for a used '96 Buick Regal, and now the Regal has a lot of rust, and 320k miles. Lots of probs and i wasted 20000 dollars

  • hey that engine noise, i had that problem w/ my Regal, and i open the hood,(engine off) spray some cooking spray and start the engine, and put more spray on the belt tht shows( both sides) be carful, and dont go over 50mph for a month, and mine went away within a month!!!

  • it will last, i have a 93 taurus gl with 520,000 miles on it, no major probs ever

  • hey come check out my vid page! I have a 99 Lumina I've done some work on, and I also have an '03 Taurus FFV, no vids of that though...

I went to auto school, and now I am a dealer mechanic, so keep at it, just be prepared for some serious work, lol...

  • Hey i have a 1996 taurus gl with 219 000km on it the transmition slips alittle and my rad leaks. Other than that is fine.

  • (Evrey Car has its problums)...

  • i have a 95 sho that has over 200,000 miles. Still runs like it was just out the show room

  • yeah but those engines are made by japs. LOL, they will last forever. :) i know I have owned 4 honda products.

  • I had a 91, 92, 93, 94, two 95's and a 99 and never any tranny problems. All were used cars with over 100, 000 Kms. Taurus rock. They take a beating especially the 3.0L vulcan puchrod motor. Like he says Springs do break I had to replace a few, brakes aren't the best. I have a 95 SE fully restored with everything new. NEVER any problems. I'll buy one again. The SHO is one of my other cars and its surprisingly fast for an automatic. Good luck

  • I've discovered that compared to the condition of other Taurus transmissions, mine isn't in bad shape. Still ain't great though. The pump seal is bad and that's where most of my problems come from, as it hurts fluid pressure.

  • AX4N transmissions are notorious for leaks, Lucas brand trans stop leak will, well, stop the leak in its tracks. Give it a try.

  • It's not an AX4N, it's an AXOD-E/AX4S.

I've used Lucas trans stop leak. Usually, it'll work for about a month and then the leak will start again. So I add a bit here and there, but not too much, because I can't overfill the tranny.

  • @dmx011 ford taurus se 2007,fires but wont start...comp says alls good new pump,filter,,700.00$ later=the mass air intake senser,,,ready 4 this? HAD A FLY COT IN IT,LOL :-P thank god i just do the work and dont own a ford, lol

  • @bigD9637

If some hack threw $700 into my car only to end up finding a problem that would have to be traced back to the air filter, I'd want my fucking money back.

  • they run great and there good on gas but they all have bad engine & trannys....it will go out at 125k or 130 it will get you past the winter maybe late feb or early march

  • I have a 96 taurus LX, 140,000 miles. Now I won't lie it did have a high idle problems at stop signs and stop lights. replaced the trans. Filter and now runs perfect.

  • Which engine did you have? I got the 3.0L 12 valve Vulcan and she purs like a kitten. The transmissions on the other hand do suck, there's no denying it.

  • Well, if you want some help, there is an enthusiast website for Tauruses and Sables.

(world wide web) (dott) tauruscarclub (dott) (comm)

  • I am a member at the TCCA forum already. It is a great place for Taurus info.

  • Cool.

  • I've had about a dozen Taurus' and Sables. My moms drives a '97 Sable and its been a great car. My '93 Taurus has about 270,000 miles on it and has lived a very rough life. It still starts everytime. Although not without their problems, Taurus is probably the most durable FWD car I've ever delt with. I've had a Lumina, a Camry, a Corsica, etc and I'd much rather be in a Taurus.

  • a lot of water comes out of the muffler on mine. we had if since 1999 and it had no major problems. it sat for a year and i put a new battary in it and it started right up.

  • Water coming out of the muffler is normal. Usually, most mufflers have a little drain hole, but some of them either don't have them or they get clogged with rust and corrosion. It's nothing to worry about.

  • Yeah, when I first bought mine, It had about 97k miles on it, and I kept having to get stuff fixed. But after a little while, I didn't have any more problems. It was just poorly maintained by the previous owner, once I started taking care of it for a while, I haven't had any problems (except for the rear springs of course).

  • Our family has owned 4 Tauruses since they came out. I can tell you from my experience, they're incredibly durable. Our 1990 model was pretty much a piece of garbage, but we've owned 3 from the 96-99 model year which have been great. They can take a lot and still keep on running. The transmissions, which have supposedly been fixed for 96-99 do still develop problems though. They get rough after a while, but changing the trans fluid helped our 98 model a lot.
