I walked into Snug Harbor (New Orleans) one night and caught Joanne playing with Jason Marsalis (drums), sorry, but the name of the bass player escapes me now (and I'm a bass player, go figure)... anyways, halfway though the evening Jason's dad Ellis Marsalis walks up on stage and starts playing 4-hand piano with Joanne... just amazing... everyone was blown away and felt privileged to have been in the right place at the right time.
Joanne is a great composer. She starts off in C and it's all dissonant and then.......suddenly there's clarity. She plays so hard that the keys need a rest after she plays. She's fantastic!
She's ridiculously talented. In about 1976 I was playing piano with a band, traveling the country. We a had a week off and we spent it bumming around NYC. I walked into this really crappy little bar in the Village, late one night, and there were about 6 customers - and she and a bass player were performing. No one was even paying attention. It was like a factory bar in Michigan. Tiny place - I asked her name and she kinda growled, "Joanne Brackeen". She's incredible.
WOW! Thanks for this. Amazingly I stumbled upon her performing in San Francisco in '95 just diggin on her good feeling, humor and style. She still has great chops and soul! Thanks for sharing.
I've been meaning to check this pianist out. I don't know why I put it off. Pretty interesting. Sort of uses McCoy Tyner's left hand, but something completely different is going on with the right, and I haven't quite gotten my head wrapped around it yet. I'll have to listen more. Thanks for posting this.
I can"t believe she shrugged after her solo. Thank you for this clip- anybody remember Ancient Dynasty( with E.Gomez,Joe Henderson,Jack deJohnette)? Tappan Zee records
I remember that album. It was the first one I heard of her. Unfortunately, it's out of print. I e-mailed her and she actually personally e-mailed my back and told me so herself.
One of my favorite pianists for thirty years! Joanne Brackeen is fabulous.

Oooh Snap! Rachel Z!
Damn Joanne has that new Y2K sound of the younger pianists!
So this is where Rachel Z gets all her piano thing from.........she studied under Joanne.
I Wickipod-ied Joanne Brackeen and she has a HEAVY background!
She has paid a whole trainload of dues!
She sounds sooo good on this set too!
Thanks Carolyong
