  • Just like the beatles. It sparked soemthing but look at what happened after. Look at the music that the beatles put out in 1968 to 1970. HIt and miss stuff. Drugs are not the answer

  • @VIDEOTIMEMACHINE "drugs" is a tricky term. grouping them all together isn't a good idea

  • @VIDEOTIMEMACHINE You say "look at the music that the Beatles put out in 68 to 70. Hit and miss stuff." First, the Beatles released 4 & a half albums worth of music in those 3 years if you count that The White Albums is a double one & Yellow Submarine has previously recorded tracks among new originals. That is staggering. Bands now a days take 2-3 years to release one album. Second, Abbey Road was done during that period. Masterpiece. White Album, convoluted yet brilliant. Only dud, Let It Be.

  • @cactaceous Compared to the stuff before the LSD , The music was more bad then good.

  • @cactaceous eh, most bands could probably do it faster, they just get in a rut of a touring cycle and needing to "get the most out of" each album and stuff. People who just release their music for free online release them all of the time. It some cases it had to do with having money from touring to record properly again too.

  • @VIDEOTIMEMACHINE the white album and abbey road are hit and miss? What are you doing dude? At the very least, drugs probably drove the band away from eachother (see: white album, it's all over the place only because everybody was doing their own thing (see:drugs and their effect on musical output)). And even then, who cares. They're artists. They'll pursue whatever the fuck they feel like

  • He has bipolar disorder. Manic depression. If you didn't know 60% of people with this mental illness abuse drugs/alcohol.

  • @PATEv4 They were a catalyst to creating good music. You have to have an initial gift for drugs to light the creativity. Otherwise, heroin addicts with guitars on the side of the street wouldn't sound like shit, you fucking retard.

  • @PATEv4 give the dude a break. the poor guy has had mental and emotional issues for the past 40 years. he was a talented songwriter, producer, performer before he started smoking the hoochie. he's just saying that drugs enhanced then detracted from his songwriting.

  • @PATEv4 fuck you dude Brian Wilson Is god himself

  • thank god

  • Good interview questions and answers. A very respectful exchange between these two.

  • #1 on my bucket list. smoke with brian wilson

  • Ok. He said drugs helped his creativity. Hello..He is like 65, slurs his speech, can barely walk, needs assistance.....call me crazy. but I think there is a long term use affect going on here.

  • @swoklahoma I've read he was mainly damaged by drugs on prescription, from some weird psychiatrist. And that this mainly happened during the 1980s.

  • Just because one writes a song while on drugs, it doesn't mean they could not of written an equal or better song sober. The premise is flawed that "drugs help a person write songs". Truth is elusive sometimes, but never changing.

  • "Marijuana helped me write Pet Sounds"

Best pro marijuana legalization argument I've ever heard

  • @mothafuckajones666 well i bet you smoke weed, where is your great hit if it is such a good argument?

  • Comment removed

  • Well, the music industry is a lot less black and white than you put it, but I've got some songs people like.

    soundcloud(dot)com/milo-hollandsworth/interference

I didn't want to whore myself out, but it's a little proof.

And yes, drugs helped me write that.

  • I'd like to hear his reply to Phil Spector's remark that Good Vibrations is simply an "edit record," and hence Brian is overrated as a producer.

  • Maybe Brians off drugs now and looks good ,It was Landy who cleaned him up.Everone seems to think his new wife got him off drugs,NOT TRUE.shes a thief with a dress whos draining his bank acounts.

  • Brian Wilson says different things to different people about drugs. what a contradiction! Where's the full interview?

  • The Beatles were boring compared to the Beach Boys.

  • @BanksideBloggers There's no such thing ; what you wrote is meaningless

  • 1:23 BULABLALABLABLULALA

  • please put the whole interview on youtube. please please please

  • battle on, Brian.

  • 'marijuana helped me write pet sounds'

    woah that just changed me.

  • I hate how he talks out of the side of his mouth...

I hate how he said with out pot he'd have never of made pet sounds...

I hate that I really don't Brian Wilson as much after watching this video...

    I hate this video...

  • @dklustick I do Brian Wilson as much.

  • @dklustick I do Brian Wilson as much.

  • @TenWhoWereTaken

yeah it's a new verb all the hip kids are saying nowadays...

  • @dklustick I wouldn't be surprised if that was true, haha.

  • @dklustick He most likely talks out of the side of his mouth due to years of psychiatric meds; look up "tardive dyskinesia". I believe he also had a small stroke at one point.

  • @xyzpdq1122 - No. He speaks this way, because his right ear is only 10 % hearing. He did this as a young man too, looks like it helps him to compensate...

  • Brian Wilson a old time junkie.lol

  • The story I heard about the original failure of Smile was that mainly it was Mike Love who sabotaged the whole project .. because Brian had over-reached Love's very-simplistic desire for MONEY & PROFIT via simple 'sticking to the formula' of churning out 'surf / hot-rod fun music' .. the kind that BW left behind him in 1964. By 1966 & 67 Brian's 'out-there' creativity was so far ahead of the rest of the group (except for Dennis, who LOVED the music of Pet Sounds & Smile) that they were lost.

  • The interviewer says that after Pet Sounds (1966), Brian took a 10-year break. Not true. That's a myth. He helmed Beach Boys albums in 1967, 1968, and 1969--they weren't as ambitious as Pet Sounds, but they were still excellent. He contributed heavily to an album in 1970. He continued to write in the early 70s, just not as much.

  • "Would you say that drugs are a double-edged sword then?"

I would say that the word Drugs has no purpose except to create idiotic, muddle-headed questions like yours

  • I normally hate radio DJs, but I wanna marry this one.

  • 8) hell yeah brian wilson dope fiend pot smoker for life 8)

  • Did we really learn anything? Drugs helped spark Smile and also sabotaged its completion. I think we all could have figured that out. Still waiting for a smart interviewer of Brian who is also a huge and knowledgeable fan. Looks like Brian came ready to talk to that interview but the interviewer had only lame questions.

  • best interview with a genius, i only wish here in souther california i could hear the full interview, and not just snippets

  • @madhoneydew Oh this is available from ONE guy in the world who recorded the full show, just that he choose not to put anything more out... -.- It's the same thing with the Pet Sounds interviews too.

  • The Beatles, like Brian Wilson, had an advantage over current musicians: They had 100% solid musical writing and performing chops before psychoactive drugs really made their appearance. Hence the ability to channel those wacked-out creative urges into the best music ever made.

  • @saguaroboy he is contradicting himself in the mike douglas show interview hea said he never took drugs to write anything in the radio show interview he said he did

  • @spacepatrolman When you're high, who wants to admit it on the Mike Douglas show? He could mow down nuns with an AK-47- His music still has more integrity than anybody before or since.

  • @saguaroboy Mike Douglas said why do you have to take drugs your a genius brian said because it changes your body chemistry what does that mean it means he needs psychotherapy which i guess he had because he mentions his psychiatrist but on the radio show he isnt in denial tony Benett said to Bill Evans why do you have to take drugs your a genius he said because drugs make me feel renewed same thing he needed psychotherapy but he didnt get any and he died.

  • bla bla bla .. way too much bullshit ....

  • He was never absent ten years. Even at his worst he never stopped recording here or there.

  • Holy Cow, Brian is the best. Please upload more!!

  • im proud of you brian for kicking the habit and its something you should tell the kids of today getting in is easy getting out is almost impossible

  • @bk5614 Just FYI, Brian may have been addicted to Xanax, but it didn't cause his tardive dyskenesia. Benzos are highly addictive and can do all kinds of damage, but TD isn't one of them. TD is caused by high doses of antipsychotic (also called neuroleptic) medications. Xanax is not a neuroleptic and doesn't cause TD.

  • @bk5614 tardive dyskinesia is a common and unfortunately, irreversible side effect of anti-psychotics which is used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar. Anti-psychotics reduce dopamine in the brain thereby causing the effect when used over a period of time. Xanax, a benzodiazpine, would not cause slurring of speech 20 years later. It could very much indeed cause slurring of speech during use but not 20 years later. The slurring is the result of the damage done by the anti-psychotics.

  • @tydees Oops, I should have looked at prior posts before offering my two cents. You explained it a lot better than I did! :D

  • I wish Jian would ask questions in which the artist could give more of an answer than he could.

  • @Bluesnswing I felt the Larry King interview was pretty good in that aspect.

  • I would suspect that Brian Wilson is Bipolar. During this interview, his words are extremely slurred which means he needs a med adjustment. He is over medicated. Often people that are Bipolar turn to drugs, particularly LSD and Cocaine. Sad prospect especially when such ones are judged so harshly.

  • @tydees Brian is A-deaf in one ear,and B-Has had his teeth done. Both of these haven't helped his speech.

Barry gibb is another one who talks completely different now he's had his gnashers done.

.Age aswell, don't just assume he has Bipolar. :)

  • I absolutely hate it when people refer to Marijuana as a drug yet they make no reference at all to Alcohol as a drug.

  • yes PLEASE upload the full interview im a big brain wilson fan!

  • Please release the full interview!

  • @garrettm91 You think Brian Wilson is going to do an interview and they don't post it ? .. It's coming be patient.

  • Kids don't do Drugs or You'll look like him..

  • Wow. Intense.

  • Wow. I am not quite as old as Brian, but his contrast of youth and age really hit home. Man, who did we think we were?

  • I don't like the drugs but the drugs like me.
