I don't think they actually eat rotting carcasses. There was an episode of Man v. Wild and he said that if you see vultures eating it, you know it's pretty fresh. He then proceeded to gnaw on a dead zebra.

@stegaflaps Because their stomach acid is very strong and their inner ecosystem bacteria can process it. Another reason the hyenas won't go near the vulture is because they throw up at their attacker, that would be very uncomfortable for them.

They're really quite amazing animals. They can finish off what other animals leave behind, which is a good thing. It stops disease spreading and vultures are immune to a lot of diseases! If there were no vultures than rats would take over and that would be a really bad thing

If that was a male lion then the hyenas wouldn't have even bothered attempting that, correct me if I'm wrong. Hyenas always work so well in packs, but shame one of them didn't keep an eye on the dinner lol
